The K98 wasn’t replaced by any of those other rifles. It was used in conjunction with them. The K98 was the standard issue rifle throughout the entire war and the Germans saw no need to replace it.
@lennykump83963 жыл бұрын
They saw the need to replace it but there was no opportunity to replace millions of guns.
@zeppelin50003 жыл бұрын
@@lennykump8396 German doctrine based their squads around the machine gun, unlike the US that based it around the rifleman. They didn't see it necessary to update the standard rifleman's weapon since it wasn't the center focus of the squad.
@lennykump83963 жыл бұрын
@@zeppelin5000 the firepower of a squad in both defense as well as attack was way too low with the k98 and that's the very reason why the Stg44 was invented. It was invented as a full replacement for the k98.

The fattest of the projectiles is a chaped charge antitank round and the yellow is a anti personell fragmention round. The inert round is a replika toy... The wooden projectiles is for training... they used chrimped tip/ blank to propell the rounds!
@arodrigues28434 жыл бұрын
UXOdude67: YOU ARE ABSOLUTELY CORRECT.!! And the wooden tipped rounds, (ammo), ARE FOR TRAINING ONLY. Period.!!! For the projection of the granades, they were special-purpose rounds, CRIMPED at the case mouth.!!! Can you imagine ALL THOSE WOOD SPLINTERS flying around, and IN THE EYES OF THE SHOOTER, and for all the people around????? Think, people, think.... And the wooden tip, IT'S ONLY TO PERMIT THE FEEDING OF THE ROUNDS. (Just try to feed an EMPTY cartridge case, and you'll understand what I mean.)!!!

The sight was important when a squad didn't have a mortar. The rifle grenade was used for indirect fire, like trying to land one in the middle of an enemy squad over the next hill. It would rarely be used for antitank fire.

Hi! We use the wooden bullets as blank rounds together with a muzzle device on the Swedish AK5 (FN). The device scattered the wooden bullets so that they are safe for indoor practice against other soldiers (wearing eye protection of course). Should be videos of this device on KZfaq;)

Very informative video depicting a mint K98 with many rare accessories. I have owned two of the wooden bullets shown. Thought they were for training purposes. Didn't know that they were used to activate the primer on a rifle grenade. Thanks for sharing the knowledge!

I hate being petty but just a clarification here: the first grenade you showed was a larger charge AP (armor piercing) grenade. The second grenade was a smaller AP grenade. The one you didn't show (the yellow/black one in the back with the flat top) is an anti-personnel grenade with (conjecture here) a DP fuze top. Information sourced from here: archive.org/stream/TacticalAndTechnicalTrendsNos31-40#page/n325/mode/2up , which is the Tactical and Technical Trends document from the Military Intelligence Service, War Department, dated October 21st, 1943.

Im certainly not an expert on these grenade launchers. This is probably one of the first I ever handled. So I appreciate your detailed feedback. I hope it will help our viewers. Thanks for watching !

Firstly, it’s not a K98, it’s a Kar98k. The ‘Kar’ stands for ‘Karabiner’ while second K does not stand for ‘carbine’ but ‘kurz’ (short). Secondly, the Kar98k was in no way replaced by the MP 38/40. Thirdly, a 1940 K98k is not a ‘very early gun’ as the rifle was adopted in 1935 and at that point, hundreds of thousands of these were already around.
@dan44664 жыл бұрын
Nick Rollstuhlfahrerson early gun reference is referring to the war which started 9/1/39 not when it was adopted in 1935. I’m sure most people including me knew what he was meaning. Anyone who knows even just a little about the rifle knows it’s Kar, but almost everyone just shortens it to K except you, I guess.

Just last week I sold a bring back K98 with the .22 conversation kit complete with the wooden box and all the parts in it, my buddy's dad brought it back from the war and I got it about 23 years ago from him, I'm getting ready to move and it's just one other thing I was getting sick of dragging around everywhere I go in life.

Much of the training of machine-gunners were done with belts of wood tipped blanks......When we were eventually fighting in Germany, our GIs found wood-tipped blanks in belts in the MG positions......It was because, the day before or even hours before, the crews were being trained on the MG in that position.(Some GIs came home with the story of germans having to resort to using wooden bullets for defence, Ha!).....(the wood top is hollow, and almost like balsa wood)....Training!

The anti tank round is a shaped charge, like the bazooka had. Nearly all rifle grenade launchers use blank cartridge to propel the grenade. There are a few, French exceptions.
@n1zm04 жыл бұрын
Well... a shaped charged like the Panzerfaust more likely was the logic rather than the US M1 Bazooka being the inspiration.

@byCheytac4 жыл бұрын
C J Campbell your right it is a wrench, with ist you can unscrew the chamber/barrel from the socket of the greanade launcher so its to disassemble and clean it.

the wooden bullet grenade theory is incorrect
@thomaswhiteman42614 жыл бұрын
Thanks. Would love to be enlightened. Then what are the wooden bullets for? They certainly did not use a live round to launch the grenade?
@sarjim43814 жыл бұрын
The wooden bullet "theory" is exactly correct. The Germans used wooden bullets and crimped blanks to fire grenades, depending on the type of rifle and grenade. The Kar98k Schiessbecher system always used wooden bullets to ignite the grenade primer. Assuming you know what you're talking about, which I seriously doubt, why write such a trollish post instead of sharing your knowledge?
@mrijk19464 жыл бұрын
Thomas Whiteman the wooden tipped bullets, ore “platzpatronen” in german were used as practice rounds for practice firing with the k98. Its common sense, if you shoot a wooden projectile at a bakelite grenade it wil crack for sure. The germans instead used crimped blanks that did ofcourse not have a projectile on them as to not damage the base of the grenade.
@mrijk19464 жыл бұрын
Thomas Whiteman as i comented below, they used less common crimped blanks. I do get why people think they used the wood tips since they are a lot more common.
@mrijk19464 жыл бұрын
Sar Jim it was not my goal to troll or fool anyone, id just like to clear the misconception. The germans NEVER used wooden tips to shoot rifle grenades, i do not know about any other system that uses projectiles to ignite a rifle grenade. Since wooden projectiles can still carry a lot of energy and damage the muzzle or base of the grenade. I do indeed get why this small misconception came to be, wooden tips are a lot more common then crimped rifle grenade rounds. Believe me i know what im talking about... ive invested allot of time into research and collecting
