Waffen Proof Stamps: Real or Fake? | Steyr M95 Rifle, P.38, Luger Holsters

This week, a Steyr Model 1895 Rifle walked in the door in immaculate condition! It is all matching and the stock and metal parts are beautiful. It is also waffen proof stamped. The proofs are so deep and clear that this raises red flags. It turns out that these proofs were added to these guns in the 1990s. So that raises a good question: How can you tell if a Nazi Waffen Proof Stamp is REAL OR FAKE? Tom shows us real examples on k98 rifles and also shows us the difference on P.38 and Luger Holsters.

And this is one of the reasons I love your channel, Honesty!! When I first started collecting I bought no end of fake tat from mostly private sales, but also dealers who may or may not have known themselves. It's great to see dealers these days who are more concerned about the hobby than making a quick buck off of somebody's ignorance. Good on you sir!!

This M95 is stamped with a large S over the chamber which indicates that it has been rechambered for the 8x56 spitzer ammunition. It is not in 8x50 as you advertise on gunbroker. I have collected WW1 Steyr weapons for many years. I saw these when they first appeared, and it was obvious that they were faked. That said, I have seen a very few M95s with waffenamts that I thought might be authentic, but not these. Century brought large quantities of the M95's into the USA which sold for under $100 each

Back in 1972 when my brother and I were 14 & 15 years old we bought Czech made VZ 24 surplus Mauser's made in Brno CZ at a sporting goods store for $34 to go deer hunting with my uncle. They shot well but the bores were dark and pitted from the war. We never sporterized them, only steamed the dents in the stocks stained& oiled them them. All the proof mark swastika's were stamped over for import requirements as I was told at the time.Years later we were at a gun show and a vendor had a table with Mauser barrels, K 98's VZ 34's and others. I picked up one and sighted down the barrel and it was mirror bright the bluing was not even shot off the front. So we purchased 2 for $25 each and when we got then home upon closer inspection my brother found on the barrel I chose had the Waffen proof mark on the front of the sight ramp. I'd like to believe its genuine because the vendor did not know it was there, because if he did I'm sure he would of wanted more that $25.

I am a reenactor. When I first began only original equipment was available. So much original equipment was worn out or destroyed by using it for reenacting. after a few years more and more uniforms and equipment became available and very soon it was all printed and stamped with original markings. After 30 or 40 years of reenacting so many of the reproductions now pass as original. Today I wouldn't buy anything that someone said was original

Hello. I'm very much enjoying your series of videos that I found only a couple days ago. A couple years back, I saw a 7.65 Ortgies at a show, priced at around $700 because it was Waffen marked. I often see these pistols for under $300, and thought this was a red-flag, as Ortgies production ended in the mid 1920s. What do you think?

@@thomaswhiteman4261 I wish. But typically at the shows they prohibit photography. I just felt, at best it was very unlikely for a pistol that stopped production in the 1920s to be Waffen marked. I have a couple 7.65 Ortgies and one in 6.35. I was surprised to read that, in it's day, the 7.65 Ortgies was a popular target pistol in Germany. They were also a popular export to the US and even John Dillinger had one. Thanks for the quick reply.

The M95's were made up until the end of the WWI. most of them have year dated military proofs typically Wn-(eagle)-year. So one with a year stamp thru 1898 will qualify as antique. I believe that any with a serial number of blank or 'a' is also antique, based on the ones I've seen, but you may have to argue that with BATF.

@doraran5158
@doraran5158 4 жыл бұрын
At time rifles were imported, quantities of ammunition were imported, 8x56Rmm Steyer, in boxes of 10 rounds, each 5 rounds in clips. Boxes were make and both Imperial Austrian mark and NAZI proof on boxes after Austria annexed. This is 80 + year old ammunition, in relatively large quantities, and these boxes are authentic, not faked. In mid 1930 almost all the M95 in Austrian stock were arsenal rebuilt by conversion to superior 8x56R cartridge, hence the "S" over chamber, shortened to carbine length and many went into storage. Police units occasionally seen in photos with these and a picture of a liberated concentration camp victim holding one on his former guard also has been seen. These rifles were NOT popular with those to whom issued. Firing it once will explain why. Very brutal recoil, in part due to stock design and points of balance. I have fired the WW1 era Steyrs in 8x50R with longer barrels and recoil tolerable compared to these. As far as the stamping's authenticity, it is plausible that after Austria annexed, NAZIs did mark them. Someone with true knowledge of Austrian and Balkan military history and who knows firearms would best be able to judge authenticity on NAZI stamp rather that opinions of Fudds. As far as condition, in 90s when these came in, they were $80 guns, with 10 round boxes of ammo around $2/box, and most around were in the arsenal reconditioned state of yours, seemingly unfired since 1930s. Considering what else came in in that era such as M95 converted to 8x57mm by Yugoslavia and a bunch of raggedy M44 and M48 Yugo made '98 Mauser style rifles, I suspect importer got them somewhere in Balkans before UN troop had a chance to destroy them, which was their goal at time. Reconditioned, forgotten for decades, never issued, that's more likely story of your Steyr. True, serious, military collectors know these Steyrs and where they fit in to the general Steyr history. I guess you can ask $10,000 for a Lorcin, and maybe if that particular one could be tied to a particularly famous event or person someone will pay that. (Just look what some art collector payed for a banana duct taped to a wall.) But reality no one likely will give you that much for a Lorcin. Likewise, these reconditioned Steyrs MOVE at $175 to $300 range, they're not actually that rare, ammunition currently almost impossible to find, and while people put a $600.00 price, they just don't move at that number. And unless part of Hitler's testicle is still on an M95, no one will give you $2,000. (Austrian Corporal Hitler was injured, in certain areas in WW1 incase you don't understand reference.) Trivia: Case head of 8x50R and 8x56R is very close to .303 British. In countries like India where civilian arms in military calibers forbidden, occasionally SMLE commercially rechambered in 8x50R will be encountered and that caliber supposedly still being made for that market. Sellers in US or Canada will often give exotic and fanciful story of how UK was helping re-arm Austria or of British commandos had them 'specially made' for 'secret missions' where they could access local caliber. (Considering Austrian ungraded to 8x56R by WW2 this silly explanation)

The WSS were better equipped with standard German weapons than the army, and not only that the had higher equipment levels, against regulations than army formations. They also enforced hidden production in factories (Steyr itself for example, the SS ran an extra enforced 8 hour shift) Your P38 holster, sadly is stamped by Helmut W, a dealer in Germany in the 1990's who stamped absolutely everything , always in the same typeface and size. @@doraran2138 no doubt they may have made ammo for them, but the nazi eagle on the receiver is very fake looking. I've own many k98 and the eagle is far off. @doraran2138
@doraran2138 4 жыл бұрын
As they were arsenal reconditioned, placed in storage and never issued, the stamp on stock would still be clear. All the ones I saw at shows in '90s looked pristine, reconditioned and unfired, so M95s in this condition are not rare. One dealer claimed he purchased 50 from wholesaler. A WW1 issue M95 carbine, with correct carbine rear site, especially if still in 8x50R Steyr round is far more rare and desirable to a collector, but these are often well worn, not in shape of these reconditioned ones. One big give away is metal finish which on originals was a smooth blue, while these reconditioned ones have rifie rifle rear sites and a coarser blue/black finish A simple cross reference would be to note the number on the stamp and check what group and why it was used. There are reference works that list what numbers were issued to what entity. A seriousWW2 collector, knowledgable in the Austrian annexation history, especially from a firearms perspective, would best settle this. Fake NAZI proof mark stamps are avalaible, but numbers generally don't correctly correspond to who was supposed to have that number, a clear exposure they're wrong. Not sure if it's a fake or not. I still remember the "Black Widow" Lugars ad the "Gray ghost" P-38 that were more a product of importer's copywriter fantasy than anything real world.
