My dad who passed 7-20-2020 at 100 told me a story of when he was in WWII in the 101st Airborne over in France. He and a buddy crossed a field to go look for wine in abandoned houses as many of them had wine cellars. They found some and stuffed their paratrooper pants ( huge pockets on the legs) and took what they could carry in their hands. When crossing the field on the way back, the Germans opened up on them with a MG 42. He said the mud was a flying all around them and they low crawled the rest of the way. He said they didn't break a single bottle. He and some other troops enjoyed some wine that night. I miss him.

Don't forget, that most of german soldiers were armed with K98 rifles, when american infantry used M1 Garands. Also, soviet army had the best rate of using full-auto guns. They produced 6.5 million of PPSH-41 and 500k of PPS-43. Not to mention 2.5 millions of SVT-40 (it's like M14, but soviet). Only MG-42 was good, everything else was kinda meh.

@lovepeace9727
@lovepeace9727 5 жыл бұрын
Destroyah MP-40 wasn't the best choice for CQB due it's slow rate of fire. Also, it wasn't better for distance , cuz if we compare MP-40 , for example to PPSH-41, we'll simply understand this - 7.62x25 > 9mm. Also, MP-40 was expensive and kinda overengineered. That's why germany produced only 1 million of these smg's. One wermacht squad had only one MP-40, one MG, one support and 7(!!!) rifles , while soviets had platoons fully equipped with PPSH-41. Idk why germany didn't started to produce MAB-38. This italian gun was cheaper and superior in every aspect. MP-40 is just overrated. STG-44 was great and etc. BUT... It also was as expensive as it possible. I mean, yeah, they produced decent amount of these guns, but at the end of the war they had no ammo even for Volkfsturmgewer's. Also, look at ammo STG uses. Is it looks like powerful cartridge of assault rifle? No... On 200m it not gonna hit anything. Basically, M2 carbine did almost the same job as STG-44...

The narrator got a lot of things wrong. First off, the MG34 was one of the finest, probably the finest machine gun there was at the time of its adoption. The MG42 was actually made to increase the firepower, hence the faster rate of fire compared to the earlier MG34, but also as a simpler and cheaper design. For example, it lacked the dual trigger of the 34, which allowed for single-shot when pulling the top part of the trigger, or full auto when pulling the bottom part. Also, the fire rate of the MG42 wasn't quite 1500-1800 rpm. It was around 1200, however that did cause unnecessary and fast wear to the gun, so one component in the mechanism (can't remember what exactly) was redesigned, which solved the issue but also lowered the rate of fire to around 950. However, 950 rpm, and especially 1200 rpm was VERY fast, and still is. There was a late war development, called MG42V or MG45, which was a machine gun with a rate of fire of about 1500 rpm.

It seems that I've already saw this video long time ago, because I've liked it already, and l don't remember seeing this.

My Great Uncle was a captain in the second world war and was a beach master on Omaha. He went in before the first wave in the attack. He directed the landing on that beach and helped soldiers out of the boats. He was one of the first American soldiers to land in France that day. He also helped land General Patton in the invasion of Sicily and Salerno. He also served in North Africa. On Omaha, he was standing under heavy German fire. Somehow he made it out alive that day. He later served in the Korean War. He served in the Army in WW2, the Coast Guard in Korea, and then served in the Marine Corps, and Navy. He went to VMI and graduated at age 22 and was 35 in 44. After the war, he became a sheriff. Rest in Peace Captain F Perry Williams and his fellow soldiers who didn't make it home.

The barrel change out isn't that bad. For one thing, the enemy wouldn't know right when the change out starts. The gun is fired in bursts so you don't know if it's a change out or just a pause. And they've got their heads down to avoid getting it blown off. So by the time the enemy actually realizes it's a barrel change, you might have a second before the barrel is back in.

@@DUTCHGAMERNL2 If you think that way you have obviously quite lacking knowledge about this time. The war was unwinnable because of the lack of manpower and the lack of resources. The Soviet Union and Germany where rivals and had both opposite ideologies so a war was quite inevitable as both nations hated each other. The Soviets where just not ready to start a war as they previously killed many high ranking generals, had massive reserve troops which where just not ready to be deployed, and a lack of industrie to support a war. The more time the Soviets got to prepare themselves thw harder it would've been for the germans to win in the long run as they would run out of man and fuel. Additionally to that, the germans hoped that Britain would've just surrendered so they could start the war earlier in the east to prevent a strong and prepared soviet union. They didn't and a long drawn out war against Britain would've ended with a defeat in the east as the russians would've started a war eventually. We can see this all at the first victories of Germany in the east where millions of soviet troops get captured and encircled which shows how unprepared the Soviet Union was. But Germany couldn't finish the Soviets off fast enough, thats why we see that the germans faced more and more difficulties the longer the war went on.

As an old MG-3 shooter from the Norwegian Army, the weapon used here does not appear to have the original MG-42 bolt. That was lighter which increased rof to 1200+ in favorable conditions. This weapon fires slower than that, probably around 900-1000 which suggest it uses the heavier bolt or has other adaptions that reduce rof. Compare with other clips and listen to the sound. The 1200+ bolt has the caracteristic 'chain saw' bark
@Loliiten

Goes to show how solid the design is as well. We basically still use the same rifle, with marginal modifications and a reduced firing rate, almost 80 years later.
@erikhalvorseth3950
@erikhalvorseth3950 4 жыл бұрын
Loliiten True. One can also see that the reenactment boys either doesnt focus much(after all its just a show) or are not very experienced operating it on a bipod. To keep your groupings down you gotta have real firm shoulder contact. Not only that, but if possible you will dig both boots firmly into the ground to further bolster the pos. Weight is also nice. A platoon commander with some routine would check out the bigger boys in his unit first, see if they can shoot with confidence. You also get the added benefit that it is heavy shit to carry in the field, especially with live ammo added in numbers, which as mentioned you need a lot of. When you get it on a tripod it is a dream to shoot with if your barrels are still good and not worn out. You can then be a danger all the way out to at least 800m, maybe more, even with open sights( the Germans heavy machingun units apparently got scopes, which increase the range even more under favorable conditions).308WIN is a great caliber which can handle some obstacles like branches etc without deviating too much, and wind drift is serious first when you enter 600+m. Not like .556 which will deviate for nothing
@erikhalvorseth3950
@erikhalvorseth3950 4 жыл бұрын
@Philosophy is pain I am purely talkin about rof. If you compare 10 MG-42 none of them will have same rof- as a matter of fact- they will deviate quite a lot. 'Favorable conditions' in this case is mostly about temperature, moist, how clean weapon is, what kind of weapon oil etc is used etc etc. Lots of parameters

I really wish I would have been able to get to speak to my Great Grandfather- in law. He served as an officer on the Eastern Front, I've heard nothing but good things about him from my family; on a side note, after coming to America (he loved this country by the way.) he tried applying at the VA for Veterans Benefits.

Depends. If you were walking across a plain and a MG-42 started firing on you, you're screwed. If you were walking through blocks of buildings, you're fine as long as you can find a flank.

I'm pretty sure that this is the return Assembled version of the MG 42, with a fire rate of only 950 rounds per minute, because you can still hear the detail shots, in the original version of 1200 or even in 1500 , you could not hear the individual shots. As of 1943, all were dismantled from original 1200 to the 950 that had reasons such as saving ammunition, rare barrel change and last longer of the machine gun in total. There were also a war spring, which allowed a rate of fire of 1,500 rounds per minute, but there was none that rate of fire allowed of 1800 rounds per minute, so that is how this American has since claimed. This is a video of an original version with a cadence of 1,200 rounds per minute, even with blanks, but much faster. MG42 Test Fire Greetings from Germany

Its because they put a bulkier M60 main spring in instead of the MG42 spring to lessen rate of fire. Most examples I've seen at these events use M60 springs

There was another reason why they reduced the fire rate. At 1500 rounds per minute sometimes the weapon will not stop fireing until the belt was done even you relased the trigger. Thats one of the reasons why the MG3 has a fire rate of 1200 then this wont happen. I got this info from my grandfather who was in the Wehrmacht.

1985Exorcist666 Firing rates for the MG3 can be 950- 1,200, however with the installation of a heavy bolt a rate of 750 rds per minute can be managed. A higher cyclic rate of fire has its merit against AA missions in which a higher rate of fire produces more rounds per burst area than a slower firing cyclic rate.

The rate of fire of that weapon is just awesome. They must've had to produce extremely high quality ammunition to prevent misfires and jams. The sound of the mg-42 is so distinctive, it must've been terrifying for allied troops to hear. The German gunners must've had to use so much discipline to keep from running thru their ammo too fast! Given the incredibly high rate of fire, anyone getting hit by it must've had a very slim chance of survival. You never just get hit by one round, but rather, you prob get struck by multiple thirty cal rounds in immediate succession. Just a brutal piece of hardware!
