Hi, if you don't put the lid under the burner, it will be much faster! The distance between the burner and the bottom of the pot determines the burning power of every alcohol burner. More distance = more power 1mm height difference can add up to a minute of cooking time.

Nice Video! I own the X-Boil too and made some tests. Boiling time will be faster if you use the stove without Lid underneath, because the stove needs a minimum clearance to the pot to be most effective. (so the hottest part of the flame is hitting the pot...) (Same clearance-story with trangia burners) Lid is only needed if you use solid-fuel like esbit (Lid on top) the burner isn't getting that hot underneath to damage the surface. I did the testing on a wooden table ;-)

Yeah it's a nice set up. More than double the weight though but my issue is more about packabilty. I love the way this rolls into the inside of my pot and you would never even know it was there. The stand and the windshield takes up too much space on the polymath. I'd swap the windshield out for my homemade cider can one or titanium ones you can get on ali express. 👍

Cheers for that. I know it is pricey for what it seems to be but tbh, it ends up ok … I think !! Following this, I bought one (from Leo) for a Toaks 750 size but I bought the “standard burner” with it If I’m honest, I figured I’d just use his Bruner in “near tent” situations and slot in a Toaks Meths burner for the rest. (Already had one). The Toaks is usable with a Trangia simmer ring too so it works for me if a bit “hybrid” Anyway, point is …. Whenever I get anything I first run some tests on the thing so I know where I am with it. Here is what I found (indoors) - the standard burner with the base rig seems a lot quicker for 500ml than your test but I think you used the ul burner version on yours and I wasn’t outdoors so all variance is possible. It boiled 500ml in just short of 8 mins using just over 15ml fill which I didn’t think was bad really for what I’d need it to do (coffee). I would say that I didn’t sit the burner on the cap as you did, giving it more head space gap. When I put it on the cap, it was slower - the Toaks burner works … BUT … it needs a bit more head height than the “dropper pot clips” give it. I just turned the pot stand upside down and dropped the clips in to that and it was enough to give it a gap. In real world, I may drop a couple of twigs under the “right way up” option but it works. - I hate Ti pots when trying to heat real food so I also tried a lentil soup in the Ti pot and standard burner/set up with the x boil stove. It actually worked fine and didn’t immediately adhere like merde to a blanket. - I used the Toaks stove with the screen but without the clips and a small Trangia 28t frying pan sat over the top of the screen. Looking at the original pictures they seem to have changed the top profile of the screen to give air space and it worked well. - burn times with 15ml fuel, I got about 9 mins and 500 ml boil using the supplied burner, the Toaks was a quicker boil but burned 20ml fuel on full open burn. Burn time on 10 ml for the Toaks was about 3.5 mins but on “simmer ring” was closer to 3 times that for the same fuel. How does this help ? I have no clue but I did the tests so thought I’d add them in case they are some use to someone else. My take home was… I’ll use both burners (rather than ditching the x boil as originally planned). It is pricey but I like it and will certainly be using it Cheers for the heads up
@NoviceWildCamper
@NoviceWildCamper Жыл бұрын
Cheers Mark. Yes you're spot on. Without the lid underneath the sweet spot would have been better. Admittedly since doing thus test I've used it on my correx table on its own without the lid and some foil underneath and its been fine and boiled better. Tbh it's hard to get constant test results without doing it indoors either no wind but that's just not how it is 'in the field' so there will always be differences between every boil with temp and wind changes but overall I think its a great set up and my favourite for alcohol stoves for sure. 👍

@@NoviceWildCamper yeah, it’s all “about …” really but I had the numbers so posted them. Mainly, I’ve been surprised how well the base set up worked so posted about that. It works because someone took time to get it right and it can also be used for “extended power” via the Toaks at the cost of fuel. The base rig is pretty efficient in the lab unless in a gale force … but then nothing much works efficiently anyway. All in all, I’m happy with it as it came. Ps. If you ever a French trip, you have safe ground here mate

I always use my ultralight table. Only weighs 73g and I take it on every camp. Not only for cooking on a level stable surface but also for putting my beer or coffee on. @@NoviceWildCamper Ah yes, I see now. Just watched the other video and given a like. It's not an exact clone. The pot stand on the Speedster is integrated and folds out to provide the support. A small difference made to avoid being sued perhaps? I got the one man version of the Border Raider. It comes with a 500 ml pot (600 to the brim), and it'll boil 500 ml of water in exactly 5 minutes using bioethanol. The windshield, supplied base plate, burner, lighter (Asoto) and a full 50 ml fuel bottle (enough for a cuppa en-route to camp) will all fit inside the pot. I've added silicon tubing to the pot handles and together with the supplied carry bag all that comes to a total of 352 grams. I don't think that's bad really when you consider the burner can be extinguished and carried with any left over fuel intact. Taking into account the favourable price difference it'll do for me at any rate. I always enjoy you videos, Mike. Take care.

I love an alcohol stove. Quiet in use with a warming glow from the flame. Trangia have made a tidy living out of them and as you say, year round use where gas freezes or when your gas stove goes wrong due to complicated parts breaking. Alcohol stoves are pretty faultless in that respect but each to their own 👍
@antduke2361
@antduke2361 Жыл бұрын
@@NoviceWildCamper they are inefficient though and dangerous in really dry conditions this year I have nearly set fire to huge areas of moorland but been lucky I managed to put it out and not have my tent burn down. They are effected by wind a lot too much more than gas. More expensive to burn than gas. The only thing they might have is lighter weight with the right setup and the burning in very cold weather, though vaporised pressurised liquid like a Petrol stove is still better for that. I think they are for the type of person who buys a carbon penny farthing when he could buy a nice alloy E bike....
@NoviceWildCamper
@NoviceWildCamper Жыл бұрын
I think like any open flame you have to be careful. Using an alcohol stove that contains the fluid like this one means it doesn't spill when tipped so is easy to control and put out. Have you seen the videos where people have knocked their jetboil over and what happens? Now that would scare me! 😬
@antduke2361
@antduke2361 Жыл бұрын
@@NoviceWildCamper no I haven't seen the videos but I do consider the gas safer and more fool proof most times it's the pot that gets knocked over with gas with it being high up more often they do just go.out of knocked over abruptly. The alcohol covers the entire area and just takes off instantly. I have found that remote gas canister stoves a lot more dangerous for that with the burner on the floor I had a problem a couple of times of trying to stop the grass around going getting lit with those. A Jetboil is about the safest thing out there for cooking from my experience especially the Mini mo model with its lower centre of gravity. The only thing is they are heavy the only negative witt this I can think and what I can grumble at. I'd choose it a million times over a normal gas stove and cup to heat or an alcohol burner if it weighed half the weight then most people would chuck and other stove away. I think they need to make a smaller titanium version and redesign one just to come in at a lower weight and I'd throw all my other stoves away
