I’ve seen those lines referred to as “Mulder and Scully’s wedding vows” by fans. I’ve also seen it argued that this scene marks the moment that Mulder and Scully are truly together (regardless of when they get together physically). It’s a sign that there will be no more Dianas in the picture anymore. It’s just him and her now, forever.

That's the way to say "I love you" in the XFiles. Like in Season 7 "I'm not gonna risk.. Losing you" this is how we can understand that Mulder loves her.

I have seen many films and TV shows, that sort of thing formed a huge part of my life for a very long time....I loved films etc from around the world, from the silent era, from Europe, old classics and modern classics and many more forgotten films inbetween. Bogart/Bacall, Hepburn and Tracy....so many....but David and Gillian were absolutely unique...those of us who followed the exploits of Mulder & Scully were truly lucky to have had them added to our lives.

Yeah but what's interesting is that every time there's a kiss Mulder instigates always but Scully definitely is receptive to it. That tells me that it's Scully who is the more hesitant of the 2, and Mulder tends to go with the moment. Check this out: Fight the future - Mulder instigates and leans in to kiss her. Millennium - Mulder stares at Scully and again instigates leaning down to her. Existence - Mulder again instigates and kisses her with William between them. Triangle - Mulder pulls 1939 Scully into him and plants one on her. The truth - Mulder walks over and takes Scully's face in his hands and again instigates the kiss. I want to believe - It's scully this time, nah only joking. Still Mulder. He again leans in and kisses her before she leaves for the hospital. Every single kiss is mulder but Scully has no qualms about aiming for his forehead. Can she not find his lips LOL

@@rochey1010 so true, but I always thought she was so hesitant because she loved him the longest. You can tell she's crushing on him in season 1 while it seemed that he started thinking of her more than a partner in late season 2 early 3. She saw him with multiple women in this time. The big thing is that Scully has had everything she loved or wanted taken from her. She almost loses her career, her life, and her freedom because of her involvement in the X-File cases. Even though she was assigned to him originally she ended up choosing him. Through her scepticism she believed him, and more importantly believed in him. She knew her feelings early on, and I think she would have been more direct with him if things hadn't gone downhill so fast. Scully lost her sister, her daughter, her family's trust, the ability to have children, and almost her life because of her involvement with Mulder. Also by that point she realized the depth of Mulder's self destructive tendencies. She saved Mulder and vice versa more times than either of them could count. She loved him, and wanted to love him. She almost lost Mulder so many times that she decided to not get caught up in whatever she felt because it could jeopardize his life and hers more than their jobs already did. She gaslit herself (just like all of their cases) into almost believing she wasn't actually in love with him. He was the only person she put her full trust in. So she would rather be not romantically involved with Him if it means that she will always have him. He finally started going for it, and while she wasn't resistant because just like the X Files deep down she knows it's real, and wants it to be real. Scully wanted him. There was so much thin ice that they stood on that there was never a good time to really be able to love each other. So it was easier to pretend, and not engage in what could be fantasy than deal with the reality of their situation.

that's what I just thought, too when watching this! Beautiful moment. but nice you added that she did kiss him through her look and her touch with her fingers. Also, I already sense the chemistry as soon Scully knocks at Mulder's door.

They fell in love with each other when they first saw each other in that basement. The idea was to make her discredit him and maybe hate each other, but there was a respect that only grew every day, so much so that his quest also became her quest! It's a lot of love involved, yessss she kissed him with her eyes and touch. Unfortunately Chis Carter wouldn't allow their love to become real, nor have I ever looked at any friends the way they look at each other.

Chris Carter just never wanted to show it so explicitly, except in seasons 8 and 9 when we can clearly see that they were a couple. I never looked at any friend that way or touched any friend like that. much less have asking a baby for a friend. you see the tension difference between Mulder and Scully and between Dogget and Monica. Mulder and Scully had something special ❤

I prefer this definition which is the official one “a basis for comparison; a reference point against which other things can be evaluated.” Hes saying scully is the center of his universe and shes saying he is the center of hers.

Truth.

In this scene, he told her : I love you (you are my touchstone) and she said "i love you too" (and you are mine)

I finally find someone who understood that part just as I did. That emphasis on "You" for me is very important. In other words, he said, "Scully, YOU are my only friend. No Diana, she wasn't my friend. Not a tear for that traitor. YOU saved me by telling me the truth, as always." And then the "you are my constant, my touchstone" and "and you are mine" translates to "I love you. I love you too." And so the drama with Diana is closed. Can you imagine if it had been Diana there telling Mulder that Scully died? Mulder in an instant would have lost his mind, screamed, ran to meet Scully's body, would not have believed, etc. But Diana couldn't care less because at that point he had already read into her mind her evil intentions and horrendous acts. So everything that happened only helped Mulder and Scully to reaffirm their friendship and love more strongly.

Mulder is also referencing the first thing Scully says where she says “I don’t know who to trust anymore”. He basically says “ I understand, I used to feel that way but I don’t anymore because I have you”. And then she replies “and you are mine”. And I think he’s softly showing her that she doesn’t need to feel that way because he will be her constant too. ….. My heart just explodes.

@@MabyMJthis is exactly how i saw this. The YOU is very important. I never believed Mulder had any romantic feelings for Diana anyway. But he believed her as a friend, like he refused to believe Scully when she said Skinner or Deepthroat was dirty. But when he could read minds he saw her for what she was and realized Scully was right this time. And when Scully came to his bed and begged him to hold on till she find him a cure he probably saw in her mind how much she truly loved him. Also in initial drafts of the episode apparently there was a scene where he confronted Diana when he was in the hospital. But they removed it for some reason

To answer your question, Chris Carter originally planned for Scully to just kiss Mulder on the forehead and leave. Mulder would then be sitting on his couch thinking about Diana (!!!!!!!!!) David argued that he wanted to rewrite the scene and the rest is history! Thank goodness for David Duchovny!

Honestly, I don't think so. After this point she was never brought up again. There really was no reason to bring her up after, and it's not like Scully has the heart at this moment to say "Hey, that bitch played you, so it's great she's dead, right!"

Well I just knew as the show went on they got closer and closer to the bad guys and I thought I read somewhere that Mulder did found out she was bad,and that Scully was right the whole time..But its alright I'll try to look it up online..

I found out about this show at least 3 years ago and I really enjoy it. It’s really good. It’s one of my favorite shows. I own most of the seasons after it was removed from Netflix. It’s waaaaaasaaayyyyyy better than supernatural. I think it’s as good as Buffy the vampire slayer

Binging it now. It was on all the time while I was growing up, but I never watched it. Just started sporadically on TV and now I’m hooked, especially on M&S. Dang, those two! 😍

+andrew harkins We'll never really know, but Fowley might have been there to protect Mulder the whole time. She was shady, but she came through in the end, and at the cost of her own life. Like Scully, I felt bad for hating her so much, and I think it was touching how Scully partly cried for her, as well as for Mulder. There is so much truth being revealed during this scene. Mulder looked past that, though, and focused on the other truth that Scully was the one he trusted, and of course the one he loved. Can you believe that we almost didn't get this scene? As originally written (if I recall correctly), the twist was to have been that everyone (Scully, Mulder, the audience) was ultimately wrong about Fowley, and then Mulder would mourn her and there would be a distance between Scully and him to mark that moment of shock & awe. We still got that twist in the final version of the scene, except Mulder barely hesitates (only showing a little shock and sorrow) before shifting his priority and attention to comforting and expressing his love for Scully (who is also more sympathetic in the final version). It was David Duchovny's idea, and thank goodness Chris Carter agreed.

I've heard about it somewhere, but I'm glad they refused it eventually. Fortunately, we have this final version.(Thank David). Carter sometimes treats his children M / S as a bad father. IMHO this beautiful scene proves they both have realized that their relationship is not just friendship, but true love. They honestly and openly express their feelings and not trying to hide anything. I think this is quite a crucial point in their relationship.

Chris Carter always listened to the actors? He didn't. Gillian had stated that she wasn't too happy with his decision to retcon the Scully storyline. She said she wanted her character to have sex with Ed Jersey on bed, but he said no. That's why the X-Files and the Mulder-Scully shippers still hate him forever.

+BatmanFanGirl Why is it sad? It's profound and emotional, yes, but I think it's supposed to mean that Mulder had found his purpose again. If anything, it was a catharsis, much like the previous scene--a release of the tensions that had been building over three episodes. Well, come to think of it, a scene probably can't be optimally cathartic without a little sadness or something like it--maybe in this case it's a form of nostalgia that comes before Mulder finds some peace. What do you think?
