Many people castigate sound demo's. I personally love them, especially done well. Three things of value. First we get to see you react to the music. Second it shows the dynamics of the speaker through multiple song selections and if the person chooses we can even hear the original track vrs what is being recorded through the speakers. Third we all know the way our own sound works and we can pick out the differences when they arise. You can clearly hear the difference in speakers when played back to back and as far as KZfaq's limitations are concerned I still think that has value.

Many frown on sound demos on KZfaq, but for those of us with high quality nearfield systems or decent headphones, as long it is recorded right with the applicable equipment, the demos sound amazing. The detail layers on this demo are superb. Very well done!

YES! RON! I don' think I've ever commented on your videos, but every time I watch you, the camera is always facing you... It's so important to show the setup. Especially when doing sound clips. In audio terms it gives viewers a bigger stage and space to watch your videos in. Keep doing new shots.

Hi from Australia. I listened to this and the Sapphires video through LCD-1 hp’s. Both were very illuminating and very good, thanks. I thought that the Sapphires sounded more open, etc, and that the bass wasn’t as dominant. The Sapphires seemed more cohesive and planar like. Both would be difficult for me to accommodate because they need to be placed out a fair way. With my humble Martin Logan EM ESL’s, I’m able to place them closer to the wall. Anyway, thanks for both demos and I think I’m in love with the Sapphires. Tc 🙏

When I first heard M3 Sapphire clips my impression was that low bass is exaggerated by 6-9dB. As you did not show measurements I could not be sure. But now that you showed flat frequency response for this setup, by comparing first clip of both in Audacity it is clear that M3 Sapphire produced about 5dB louder 55Hz tone at the end of the clip.

There is no doubt that this set up is outstanding. I listened through headphones, no point going through my computer speakers, at least they gave me a chance to judge the quality. The choice of music too has been chosen for it's recording quality. I have a couple of questions though: How do the speakers sound without the subs, and for potential buyers, how would they sound with a more affordable and a less exotic amplifier? Apart from the fun and satisfaction of a home build speaker of quality, most people I'm sure, buy these because of the relative low cost to quality ratio and have in turn a relativley low cost amplifier. The choice of music, how do 'Ordinary' good recordings made by big studios sound? Classic recordings such as 'Kind of Blue' Miles Davis. or the excellent 'Acis and Glalatea' The Dunedin Consort, on the Linn lable sound for example?

I'm guessing here, but the subs probably roll in at about 80-100Hz. Maybe at 50-60 Hz, if he's trying to maximize how the X-LS speakers sound. Regardless, certainly nothing in the first 2-3 min touches the subs. As for this being "how (our) speakers sound", no, not totally. I'd agree if he was just importing the WAV/MP3 file he was playing, then it'd be a demo of our speakers. Since he is recording what the speakers are outputting, you can hear (to the limit of your speakers) how these speakers sound... compared to how others sound with the same setup (two channel, same mics, positions, etc.). It's a comparison tool. I admit that there are limitations to what he's doing, but, IMO, this does add a useful element compared to what can be found on other channels. Anyway, my $.02..

It’s tough to judge recordings of speakers for obvious reasons, but your recordings provide a very nice reference point. These sound very nice but they don’t seem to give quite the wow that those Spatials gave. Is that just the recording, or would you say that’s an accurate conclusion you can draw from comparing these 2 recordings? I’m guessing the subs could complement the Spatials too, but even in the mids and highs your recording of the Spatials sounds so much more composed. Thanks for the great content!
@michaellundy3551
@michaellundy3551 4 жыл бұрын
Keep in mind the X-LS Encore is a ported box while the Spatials are open baffle. Two very different designs for different uses. Ron points this out in the video. For a more accurate comparison to the Spatials, you need the NX-Otica MTM monitor (same as Ron's NX-Oticas but without the bottom 4 woofers) on top of the dual OB H-frames. Then you have an open baffle to open baffle comparison. I think Ron's point here is that for full range base, the X-LS Encores need a subwoofer. Which they do. I think most people would pair the X-LS Encores with a sealed or ported sub like a GR-Research/Rythmik Audio sealed servo sub in a 2.1 or 2.2 system. After all, if you have the room for open baffle subs, pair them with open baffle speakers.
@caseyodonnell6621
@caseyodonnell6621 4 жыл бұрын
@@michaellundy3551 Yeah, I have zero 1st hand experience with open baffle designs but since watching NRD and Danny with GR Research's stuff and have become much more aware of the part that the cabinet plays. I have a couple of pairs of newer bookshelf speakers that I still enjoy quite a bit that have relatively inert cabinets and a couple of old pairs of Klipsch floorstanders (mid 80's had since new) that I used to think were the bees knees and now, I can't help but hear the cabinets. They can still sound very nice but I'm now much more aware of shortcomings that I was previously oblivious to. Down the rabbit hole I go. I'm curious to see the NX-Otica MTM Monitors. I'll probably buy the LGK as my first trial DIY project though.

Ron, I have a pair of CSS Criton TD1 speakers and although very nice, I wish for a slightly more revealing speaker with a tad more sparkle is my preference. Do you feel the X-LS Encore is more in my ball park sound wise? In comparison, I have an older pair of Sonus Faber Concertinos that is more me, but they lack the mid bass I want to fix. Too bad this kind of a thing isn't available in europe.. Are those subs passive or active(from the look of them they seem passive)?

What crossover components are in these? The basic kit or the Sonicap and resistor upgrades?

The first Ron did on these was a tear down/comparison of the crossovers in an older X/LS Encore with some upgrades and these. If you haven't seen it, check it out.

@@michaellundy3551 is there a massive sound difference using the Encore crossover PCBs vs point to point? (I managed to buy the crossovers before they sold out)
@michaellundy3551

@@neccros007 Brian, there is an extreme difference between the PCB, even when upgraded with Sonicaps and Mills resistors, and the crossovers in this pair of Encores. I put an additional $500 into the crossover parts in this pair and the networks are point-to-point wired with Cardas quadeutetic solder. If you look closely at the PCB crossovers in Ron's X-LS Encores (in the tear down video) you will notice they have been upgraded with Sonicaps and I'm pretty sure Mills resistors. So when Ron talks about the difference in sound quality between his pair of encores and this pair, he is addressing this specific question.

@@michaellundy3551 Well I have the PCBs and the Sonicaps and mills resistors to upgrade the boards with.... Oh well I cant afford another 500.... guess I will have to live with lesser speakers!

My only critique would be that the Encores seem to lack a little leading-edge bite. Just a bit timid when they initially present a note, giving them a slightly relaxed presentation. Also, and this may be due to how they are integrated with the subs, but the lower register of female vocals sounds a bit too thick, and it immediately disappears as the vocalist climbs up to higher notes. Anyone else notice these things as well, or is it just me?
