The whole world watches, including the Avengers, as the X-men struggle to save the world in "Tolerance is Extinction Part 3", the season finale of X-MEN '97! This episode is full of comic references, including cameos of Captain America, Iron Man, Spider-man, Black Panther, Doctor Strange, Daredevil, and appearances from the Phoenix and Apocalypse! But does the show land it's deeper thematic questions?

I think the problem with Magneto also stems from the 90s show. They would gloss over some of his more heinous acts and just be like "awww well you know"

It's honestly less egregious in the animated series because they never let him get away with all that much. It's more his goals that are horrific, than what he's actually accomplished. It's much harder in the comics and the movies where he's actively killed hundreds if not thousands of people, and characters are like "His childhood though..." - DJ

To counter your arguement about nostalgia being the primary reason the show was seen so favourably, I never once watched a single episode of the original series when I was young (despite the fact that I had seen Spider-Man TAS and most other superhero animated shows from the 90's and have been reading comics since I was a kid) and only watched it for the first time just a few months ago, and yet despite that I absolutely loved X-Men '97 and would even say that it's far superior in most ways to the original X-Men: The Animated Series. I really don't mean this in a disrespectful way but sometimes just because you may have a certain opinion, it doesn't suddenly make it fact. I really hope this idoes not come off as disrespectful or harsh in any way because it really was not my intention whatsoever. If it did, I want you to know that I really didn't mean for it and I'm sorry.

I overall agree with your points here and I don't think you were nitpicking. Even if the Avengers themselves didn't come to help (you could maybe say they didn't have any way to get to the asteroid in time) humans really showing up to help somehow would have been great. Like... I don't know, some human scientists radioing in to help Hank run calculations or something. Just that moment of unity. As for the X-men reaching out to Bastion, I'm also of two minds about that, but I suppose you could say that Bastion was born with Sentinel programing that was influencing his actions and so he's not fully culpable. I don't know how much I would buy into that, but it's something. One thing I did really appreciate was the show making the point that no, humans and mutants aren't in competition with humans, and their presence doesn't equate to human extinction. Mutants are just a new kind of human. I think that's an important perspective to present for the X-men in contrast to their villains.
@OnlyStupidAnswers
@OnlyStupidAnswers Ай бұрын
I think that last point is really important, and it's something I wish the franchise focused on more often. So often mutants are treated as a separate species, which I think muddles the metaphor. I think focusing on the fact that they are also humans, just with powers, maybe the next phase of humanity, is much stronger. - DJ

For me, the finale felt like a constant rising action. Some cool moments with a thin narrative to string them a long and a payoff/climax that felt lacking with the overall story of the season.

i disagree but see where you are coming from especially with showing the good of humanity. Pitch: what if instead of random pheonix appearance: when bastian has cable he gets sinister to raise jean out the water and have cable kill her. Before he can though boom shield hits sinister, knocking him out, and you hear avengers assembly. Both avengers and xmen battle bastion and right when they have him done and out sinister wakes up throughing the shield at jean but cable pushes her out the way thus cutting his arm. Jean seeing her dismembered son goes super saiyan (pheonix) ans strips sinister of his dna and then bastion gets the arm, transforms to mega-bastion-x and wipes out everyone with a shock wave then goes to space and the eps continues as is but less heroes looking up (except keep that tchaka line to the president).

After talking to some others in the comments it might be as simple as the episode showing more solidarity between normal humans as the help each other and even other mutants in the crisis. Focus less on the heroes and more acts of normal human selflessness. - DJ

One thing DJ did clearly get wrong about Captain America, and it's not said out loud, and it's inferred in what he said to Rouge, is that a symbol of America wearing a flag as a Uniform can not go into a sovereign country America is not directly at war with and fuck shit up. That would cause tensions between America and Mexico. Even for a genocidal racist like Gyrick, that would be bad, as Rouge tore through them and did very bad things.

@@OnlyStupidAnswers I am a huge fan, and I agree that you can only go "Magneto was Right" from the series, but there's a parallel for equal rights and opportunities, there's a reflection on how lots more people are believing that more extreme action is ever more justified in fights for equality. Beau DeMayo was apparently there for the Pulse nightclub incident, which means there's empathy for the more gurella tactics.

Biggest reason that the Avengers couldnt help is because it was the 90s, and they blew chunks. Book wise they either would have been heroes reborning [cant do that yet in the show] or still reeling from the crossing and Tony is only 19 and probably still a burgeoning alcoholic, which is why he was less then active against the primes

They didn't show any heroes that could stop an asteroid. It's not like Thor made an appearance. I do agree with you that the show doesn't really make a tangible case for Xavier's view. I didn't need a big hero team up tho, it would've been enough to have some human supporting characters who weren't problematic (Trish Tilby). The show is doing so much more than the previous series, I have no idea how you can chalk it up to nostalgia. The 90s show was much less mature.

@@BushmasterH It doesn't really happen in the show tho, is the issue. I guess you can make a case for Trish realizing she went about things the wrong way, but then she immediately becomes a prime Sentinel spouting hateful things so... 🥴
@velemamba260
@velemamba260 Ай бұрын
@@BushmasterH I think the problem with that is the show doesn't really draw attention to those small acts of kindness, especially not when set against the very overt examples of humanity being set against mutants. Also the finale is the big culmination of all the themes thus far, so it's exactly the moment when you have that big moment of humanity helping mutants.

It may have been better to not show the hero characters at all and focus more on normal human beings helping each other, and other mutants, in the midst of the crisis. Yes, we see that with the heroes, but it reads more as fan service than as narrative examples of compassion. - DJ
@LeVidocq
@LeVidocq 29 күн бұрын
@@OnlyStupidAnswers I mean, I don't think they were aiming to show human compassion with the cameos. It was more "look at all these other characters reacting to this! This is a global event in this shared universe!" so while it *is* fan service, it's also a response to the kinds of questions fans raise whenever there's a world shattering event in any shared universe of characters. The Prime Sentinels were going after humans as well so it was no longer just a mutant issue. I guess the show doesn't really want to rely on human compassion because most people will never understand enough to be completely accepting, as at best the human characters keep one foot firmly in the status quo, where they already have advantages. And maybe that's why instead we have Cyclops showing compassion to Bastion, who grew up a "freak" like they are, in spite of hating mutants. An outsiders have to stick together sort of message.

I think that framing magneto as purely a genocidal maniac is a little off. He is the victim of 2 attempted genocides hinself. It is completely understandable how that could radicalise someone, and Charles entire worldview is about acceptance and understanding. He'd be a hypocrite if he stand with humanity, who have been genocidal towards mutants, but not magneto
@OnlyStupidAnswers
@OnlyStupidAnswers Ай бұрын
I think that take generalizes humanity. Not *all* humans are genocidal, not even in the X-franchise. You can judge an individual, and hold them accountable for their actions, but it's wrong to collectively punish an entire people group for the actions of some of their individual members. - DJ
