Thanks. I really didn't think enough about those altitudes when I looked at the chart. It should have been pretty obvious I needed to descend sooner. Regardless, my mistake did allow the opportunity to go missed approach.

Notice that AVAKI is a fly by waypoint, you do not have to fly over it, additionally coming from a sharp angle towards it the FMC computed a large turn radius which resulted to an inappropriate approach of the next waypoint LESOR, when you are that close to the runway you have to fly straight to the fix, on track. A manual override shall be applied to fly out more, have a proper manual turn and approach AVAKI at a proper angle and speed, that way is easier to control your approach speed and glidepath angle, avoiding last minute corrections and rush decisions. As far as I know you can not use speedbrakes once the flaps are deployed, you better have your speed set in time.

I’ve being having normal fine takeoffs but when I reach T/D my aircraft won’t decend even though I have selected my ALT INT below cruise nothing happens

No need to push ALT Intervention. Just dial down the altitude on the MCP - If it is still set as the cruise altitude, the aircraft will see it as a restriction. VNAV should then handle the rest. ;)

@@FlightBrothersFT not sure if I'm special or not. Fairly new to flight sims. I had set my cruise alt to fl360 then at top of decent lowered it to 600 and I went down the runway at FL360. lol, I can admit it was super funny.. but now my frustration is setting in. any advice??

Are you in VNAV mode? If yes, it should descend (in the Zibo) as long as you’ve dialed the lower altitude. If not, pressing altitude intervene should begin the descent, if you are past top of decent, AND a lower altitude has been selected on the MCP. Sorry for the delayed response. HELP. Whenever it's time to descend, VNAV switches off to "CWS P" (I never made any inputs onto my joystick and the ACT ECON DESCENT page is configured), and when I try to reengage VNAV, it doesn't work. Keep in mind that I have my altitude dialed to my next waypoint after the T/D. Is there something I'm doing wrong?

So your selected altitude remains below the VNAV profile correct? CWS iirc is control wheel steering, it makes a Boeing similar to an Airbus in the control inputs. It’s been a long time since either of us has done any sim flying, but as long as the altitude is below once T/D is reached, it should reduce thrust and begin the descent via the VNAV profile.

Hello thanks for the video, well done. I fly the same zibo mod 737-800, but cannot get the wind indication and direction to show up on the display (CDU) like yours. I don't know why this is, no matter how the winds are they never show up. Any way I can get this to work? My version of zibo is 3.34. Thanks again.

That is strange. Neither of us has seen that particular issue before, so we don't have any advice. When we get stumped with Zibo we usually refer to the Facebook forum 'The Zibo COMMUNITY Group.' We strongly recommend all Zibo users joining the group, and reading the documentation in the "Files" section of the group. If you don't find answers in the documents, user 'Nico du Bruyn' is an absolute guru and very active on the forum.

Not really, but google the 'rule of 3' and you'll find some simple calculations. For an airliner, this typically works out to around 90nm.

How do you begin the VNAV descent if you miss setting the ALT to a low value before T/D (top of descent) point? When I do that and set the ALT to a lower value after T/D, it doesn't start descending. I have to manually descend with V/S mode.

Kostia Komrad that’s how you would do it. Once it captures the descent path, you should be able to re-engage VNAV if I correctly recall.

Is it okay to not select a 'transition' after selecting an Arrival and runway? Noticed you didn't choose one. (I do that often and was hoping that was okay.)

Kreemerz on a STAR (Standard Terminal Arrival Route) you don’t have a “transition” per se. You would select the waypoint on the STAR nearest your route. It’s semantics, but a “transition” is only used on a departure (SID) when transitioning to an airway from the departure procedure.

Ok so i have a question, when im on my approach (Using 737-800) i set my altitude to 5300. But when i got to 8000 my airplane just stopped descending and stayed in the upper 7 thousands to near 8000. Even when i clicked on approach it still does not descend. It's mad annoying, could you help?

Official J Gamer do you have an approach loaded into the FMC? If so, it will respect the altitude constraint unless you depress the altitude intervene (alt inv) button on the MCP.

On the overhead panel you will have to set your pressurization panel, (close to right bottom)both the cruise altitude, and your landing airport altitude. That should fix it.

I think I must have programmed my flight wrong. Was flying from Seattle Tacoma to Los Angeles and somehow the autopilot turned the flight off course so I flew over Boise Idaho. Same happens when I was flying DFW to IAH and midway the plane turned around no input from my and started to fly back to DFW

Wow. Sounds like either an incorrect or out of date waypoint or perhaps a 'vectors'. You can check for a lot of that using the 'Plan' mode knob and the 'step' feature on the legs page.

We would recommend googling other users’ set ups. We do not have iMac computers, and the only suggestion we could offer is to decrease your settings until you find stable performance.

How do you get the ACARS in the FMC?

You should be able to request it (if you are asking about ATIS), and it will take a few seconds to a minute to come back. Are you using real-time weather? We have seen some issues on pages and forums where preset weather may cause issues or not report through ATIS.

Hi, awesome video. I have the Zibo 737 as well, but it doesn't start the decent automatically like yours. I have all the route set and executed well before the top of descent but it refuses to start the decent, any tips?

Vinícius Pinheiro have you adjusted your altitude? If you still have the cruise altitude set, it will maintain and pass the T/D and not descend. Maybe 40 miles or so before Top of Descent, adjust the altitude to your next crossing restriction on the approach. Hope this helps!

@@FlightBrothersFT Did that, about 40 miles before Top of Descent and nothing, had to press the alt intv button. In only one flight I managed to get it going on it's own, but can't quite tell what I did different that time...

Not sure off the top of my head. The alt intervene is always a good go-to. The last thing I can think of is to make sure your cruise altitude on the MCP and FMC match. If they do, then I can’t think of why it doesn’t descend. The other Flight Brother (creator of this video) May chime in with something. He has way more Zibo hours under his belt than me. He flew it almost exclusively for about a year. I have about 20-30 Zibo hours if I had to guess. I’ll see if he has any thoughts.

yesterday i flew my first ever fmc-guided flight in X-Plane. i missed the top of descent and by the time i reached the runway i was too fast, but being a simulator i said "i can handle this". i could not handle it. i touched down faster than a bullet, the runway was too short, i overshot it and became a boat in the ocean. now i'm here trying to figure out what went wrong. edit: choosing an airport with ILS capabilities would have been helpful for me. i thought it had ILS, i didn't check beforehand. it didn't have ILS.

Sounds like a typical learning experience! Turned your airline into a cruise line. In all honesty, missing top of descent is a very big concern. I tend to check the progress page a lot to see the estimated times and remaining distance. Should you need to burn off extra speed and altitude *slow down first*! Most aircraft can descend or decelerate, but not both at the same time. Slowing first reduces the ground you cover and buys you more time than descending fast. Also, you can buy more time by performing a 'hold' and then returning to course. Basically flying a racetrack pattern in the sky to descend or decelerate without getting closer to the destination. Good luck with your next flight!

I missed the top of descent because i thought the Boeing would start the descent automtically, and it wasn't the case, i had to engage the descent manually but by the time i noticed it it was already too late. I *thought* i'd lose the speed by the time i was at the last checkpoint but that wasn't the case at all. And to make things worse i was landing in Rio de Janeiro, the Sugarloaf was in the way, i had to keep it very steady. Awesome approach though, very beautiful and challenging. I think i used the STAR correctly because it lined me up with the runway nicely, it just didn't follow the altitude and speed limits, and that's what i need to figure out next. I'm new to X-Plane coming from FSX, so there's a bit of a learning curve. A few more trips as a cruise line and i'll nail it, hopefully!

It should have began the descent automatically on the Zibo, you just have to set the next altitude restriction/lower altitude on the MCP prior to ToD.

@@FlightBrothersFT I'll download it then. I did another flight and the same issue happened, didn't descend automatically and didn't slow down, never following what was on the FMC except for the waypoints. But this time i managed to land it, so that's a step ahead. I'll try the Zibo then

CreeperCanine yes, they use Jeppesen charts and are available in a monthly or annual subscription rate. Worth it in our opinion if you are a frequent flyer.

Subscription would be the simplest solution to having up-to-date nav data in your FMC. We use Navigraph, but there is at least one other service out there. I've heard of some people buying a month subscription then canceling once or twice a year. Generally speaking, only a small percentage of waypoints and procedures change from one AIRAC cycle to the next, so you might find buying one month could carry you quite sometime. That said, if you can afford the expense, Navigraph is a fantastic tool with more than just nav data included and I've never regretted having it.

No, but it's recommended to have the most up-to-date AIRAC since that's what controllers have. It makes their job easier and it will help your life as well. I fly on older AIRAC myself, so it's not much of a big deal :)!

What is this? Seriously, if you want to teach, students expect you to know the material. I gave up on this video after you stumbled through deciphering the ATIS report. My friend, that is inexcusable.

Sorry to disappoint. We try to be continually learning, and this video reflects where we were at the time of production. We might recommend you check out the professional pilots who also create sim content, like 'flightdeck2sim,' where you can surely find perfect ATIS reports and commentary on real world procedures.
