Hi Ray. I work with a lot of groups when I run canoe sessions. Getting the swimmer(s) back in the canoe is always challenging. Once the initial shock of the cold water is over, instructing them where to be and what to do falls mainly on deaf ears! Agree with you that the heel hook is a more reliable method of getting them in especially for younger people with less strength. I'm always nervous of transferring them to my canoe (as you mention too) as they can unsettle the balance. Great video Ray - always glad to learn from the best 🙂

Thank you for that kind and thoughtful response. Yep the cold shock is always issue and I generally stay well back until they are listening to me. Keep well and good paddling.

Another great instruction video, shows the benefit of good communication during a rescue. Also a good example of using the swimmer to assist the rescuer in stablishing the rescuer's boat which also keeps them occupied and under the control of the rescuer

I love that you've got the girls doing the demo, this helps dispels the myth that only the butch can do these things. A little bit of technique goes a long way. (Did they volunteer or were they co-erced?)

Bribery! Both Lina and myself had long thought it would be good if if was women doing the rescues. Before Lizzie was involved it was planned I would be in the water (again). These messages about who can do what are so important. Thanks Sue

Another fine vid Ray - it’s such a shame we didn’t do any filming of rescues in the mid late 90’s. One point for the comment readers - it’s clear on this vid that good technique is vital, the cold and fatigue will sap your strength as well as the increased mental capacity required in a rescue situation. Ray has already mentioned that they don’t need to be pretty rescues or slick - they just need to work every time with every boat in your party. Strength is not always available so stick to technique. I also agree that continued communication is needed from the start to make an ongoing check of the casualty in the water for both their position and their ability to capsize your own boat. This can happen at any time during the rescue as cold and the shock of capsize can addle rational thinking. Keep up the great videos Ray 👍🏻

Thank you! Your vids have totally thus far educated my wife, 11 year old daughter, 17 year old son, and mysel. Since taking up canoeing this summer. One more dry suit to get.And then we will be practicing this in cold water. WE have two 16ft rangers and were hit with a freak gust of wind on open water almost tipped both boats.came from nowhere and was gone as fast as it hit. We were close to shore but gave me food for thought. This is our new training. Thanks again from all of us.

Nice content and well done! I should like to see a tandem self-rescue-one canoe, two people in the water, no one else for miles around. Do we self-rescue, or try and swim for shore? It would be tricky to film-windy conditions and turbulent water-but the very conditions when one is more likely to capsize.
@RayGoodwinCanoe
@RayGoodwinCanoe 3 жыл бұрын
It is one more for the list. But my own feeling is always self-rescue so that you still have your kit. I will deal with this as an idea when I do my load carrying video.

Excellent demonstration Lina and Lizzie, and great camera holding from Ray ;) Description ain't bad either. The simplicity of the process, when you see it demonstrated clearly is good. Happy to see my basic X-rescue is similar to Lizzie's, though practice is always needed. Communication is particularly good from Lizzie in calm tones to Lina, exactly what even those of us who've fallen in a fair few times appreciate when we're suddenly & unexpectedly cold and wet.

Thanks for that Mal. Appreciated. It was quite funny doing this initially as Lizzie was doing the calm talking bit and presuming Lina would do things. I made them redo it twice (Lina was not pleased) as I said the talk bit was a vital part of it. Glad you picked up on it.

A nice video, good techniques too. Rescueing a swimmer with the flooded canoe was a new one to me. So thanks for that. Something I've seen over the last ten or more years that bothers me is the use of bouyancy aids with pockets on the front. These end up with all sorts in them and must make re-entering a boat very difficult. Just a thought. Al
@RayGoodwinCanoe
@RayGoodwinCanoe 3 жыл бұрын
Yep pockets make it more difficult but the heel hook gets around that nicely. Also for some women the upper chest or folk like me the increased girth around the middle.

Very clear video once again, very good job filming and editing Ray. Having done this kind of rescue and seeing it again here makes me rethink the way I pack the canoe. Any effort put into packing the boat in such a way that all the kit in the boat can be released in a quick manner when it has been tipped over is well worth it. I normally attach each pack to the boat with a quick-release and then lash all the packs down with a separate rope without going through any loops so that the lashing-cord doesn't interfere with anything in the boat. Have you made a video about packing a boat in such a way that all the packs can be released quickly before that I missed? Otherwise it would be very helpful... :) greetings, Ruud
@RayGoodwinCanoe
@RayGoodwinCanoe 3 жыл бұрын
How to pack a canoe is on the list. Not sure when I am going to get it done but it will be out this winter. If I have more than one pack I tend to tie them down in the boat. In that case we simply turn them up the right way and either take them to the side or bail. And thank you for your kind comments.

Once you have liquid water again then the trick is to practise the rescues without anyone in the water. Once those are slick go for the full thing.

Do the same rescues WITHOUT THE AIR BAGS please, so we can see a more realistic demo?
@RayGoodwinCanoe
@RayGoodwinCanoe 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Lynette, I don't paddle, in the Uk, without airbags. I would say most folk here do. In Canada I don't have airbags but in any but the easiest conditions all the gear is lashed down and provides the buoyancy. I do a lot of solo paddling and am planning on more in the next years (often on remote Scottish Waters) so have a real need for a solo rescue that works for me and those detailed are the ones I use. There are rescues like the Capistrano Flip which work for un air bagged boats but I cannot do these with a plastic boat: this method is detailed in my book. So the demo is realistic because it is what I practise and what I would use in a real event. Hope that explains why I show the methods in my videos: they are what I use. But thanks for commenting. Ray PS just visited your site and love the AcrylArt. Will go back for a longer look later today.

@@RayGoodwinCanoe Thanks Ray! Here in Canada we always use airbags in our MW boats but never in our LW boats, and the boats in this videodo appear to be MW boats, so you are quite correct. This video was just shared to my club by a LW Instructor, & the video appears to be LW, so that was the perspective from which I was thinking wrt my comment. These were my other more positive comments within my club: Excellent technique on the T-rescue rolling of the canoe to break seal / lift to gunwale while sideways then continue the roll to empty water, however those giant WW airbags have displaced 1/2? the water already... which makes this a little misleading for any LW paddlers? & yes - the HEEL HOOK (0:50 - 1:00) re-entry technique can be a big help for folks with less upper body strength or big chests or bulky PFDs - & note how the rescuer allows the gunwale being climbed over to dip very close to the water level so there's less height to climb over. These rescue techniques are something we should ALL be playing with (when the water is warm?) so that we KNOW we can do them when it counts! Thanks for doing what you do for canoeing Ray!

I've yet to see somebody solo flip a 65 pound loaded or unloaded canoe using arms and a scissor kick...without added buoyancy...especially in a Royalex or similar boat.
