Not entirely true, Crysis was released back in 2007. By then Netburst was seen as a failure and the first consumer dual core processors had been on the market for more than two years. So the writing was on the wall, more threads was the way to go.

Thanks for the video. It's not a bad combo for the price. Thankfully the TDP on that CPU isn't too high. Since you said the VRM's get pretty toasty with the chip you were using I'd have some concerns if you tried to use that board with a Xeon that had a TDP of 120 watts or higher which most of the 8 and higher core count V3 chips have. Good to know everything on the board worked as advertised!

With VRM cooling a sunflower style cooler or a downdraft cooler could help with bringing down those VRM temps. Very good performance for a Haswell based Xeon stock and with the Multicore enhancement mod enabled. My 4790K + Asus Z97 Pro board has multicore enhancement feature and it is enabled by default and it does the same thing it boosts all cores to the max turbo boost. Also finally a platform where you could use your RX5700 card it has been a while since you could use that card.

To show how powerful the Xeon processors are I have an X79 motherboard I bought after watching your channel and I got a 10 core E5-2658 v2 with a single core turbo speed of 3Ghz and a base speed of 2.4Ghz. Thing is you almost never get 3Ghz so I just went to the BIOS and set it to single core and rebooted, and right enough I got 3Ghz, I then got side tracked and forgot it was running on 1 core, and TBH I'm hard pressed to spot the difference, I am only running Chrome, but it's still able to open numerous tabs and play 1080P youtube videos, saying that Chrome is pretty resource intensify these days. But I could see myself getting an X99 system, I have been really pleased with my X79 one, and it's mad to be able to get a 10 core 3Ghz processor that was nearly $2000 a few years back for £70, the V3 processors are going to be a bit more pricey, but give it a couple of years and they will go down, anyway great Video like usual Phil, thanks.

CPU cost me $101 at the time. I spent $99 for the HuananZhi X99TF. I also spent $120 +$30 shipping on eBay (Bid, 2 months ago) for 4 x 8GB of Mushkin Redline DDR3 1833 non EEC RAM. If I had to do it again, I would go for the package deal and save $100. Nevertheless, this platform is a BEAST for the money. CB R15 all core score = 1830. Amazed how cool this rig runs compared to my X79 (ASUS P9X79 Pro) E5-1680V2 (4.2 Ghz all core) daily driver. I only spent $28 for a 6 pipe SnowMan dual/120mm RGB fan CPU cooler for this E5-2678V3. Works like a charm. VRM's are also cool; then again, the VRM has a dual min-fan active cooler on the X99TF motherboard.

Cool that you can get that sort of thing, that processor gets close to my 1800x on cinebench. Do you ever run into problems sliding your vga cards in that test bench? Issus on my DIY project makes the old vgas, with the dvi and vga ports on the top, hit the bar that fastens the expansion cards. In another note I think you should up the dificulty for these processors and run the games at 1440p.

Just fyi, chokes (inductors) don't really create enough heat to really matter, what heat you're seeing is probably spillover from the vregs located under the heatsink. It's bound to happen with components located so close together. I wouldn't necessarily say it's a sign of poor vreg cooling either. Those things are normally rated to operate at high temperatures.

Great video. Would an i7 5th gen, such as he 6 core/12 thread i7-5820k or i7-5930k work on these boards. With the higher boost would that solve some of the cpu bottlenecking issues, particularly if these cpu can be overclocked from their stock turbo of 3.5 & 3.7ghz respectively to something like .4.2-4.5ghz ?

The second was DOA. Neither seller any help, eventually both agreed returns, which I've had to pay for. Currently waiting on refunds of around £200 😢 plus £40 in return postage and £11 customs which I'll never see again. I think these Xeons are a great proposition for the price, but the boards are an absolute lucky dip! If you can find a used branded X99 board for a reasonable price locally then I would do that and just buy the chip from Ali. Buyer Beware guys.

Hey Phil, thanks for the great content. Do you prefer the 2620v3 over the 1650v2?

Even though these boards are new, they are built from repurposed parts. At least the chipset itself, sometimes also other ICs I've heard. You don't have to worry about it though, chips are almost never the thing that break when a computer stops working

Wouter Verbruggen I’ve been using the x79 stuff in my office, 6 PCs used CPUs, ram and various used nvidia 980/970 and amid 280x. I took apart all the GPUs cleaned them and added new paste, and I put in cheap Chinese all in one liquid cooling. No issues, they are absolute champs

How many Xeons (if any) are redundant when you take their power consumption into account? How about when you consider features on more modern chips? I'm asking because I'm ignorant about modern developments in chips.

We're starting to see software that requires newer processors. 2 that come to mind are Zoom, which won't do virtual backgrounds without a greenscreen unless you have a newer supported processor, and MS Flight Simulator 2020. That's going to mean living with restrictions if you go with these setups. Might be totally acceptable for some. It's not for me.

Not really, I got an E5-1650v3 on Aliexpress a few weeks ago, and with the right OC in the BIOS (4.4ghz all cores, 4.2uncore) it has basically equal performance to my 9750h laptop CPU which I undervolted and replaced the thermal paste on. The 1650v3 is basically a 5820k so it's a pretty fair comparison. In 2019 I got the machinist X99 and BIOS-modded it with E5-2620v3 and it was quite a bit slower than 1650v3, more like a 4790k type performance, but with more threads.

@@sersoft_corp but a E5-1650v3 with motherboard and RAM costs around $260-300 That's already Ryzen 5 3600 territory. I would go for a Ryzen over E5-1650v3

@Nebojša Ivančević It is possible. you may see a slight bottleneck at very high FPS though, I will be upgrading to 3070 for sure, and with my triple 4k displays, if high resolution can also be an issue, I will definitely find out

It's worth noting that Haswell tends to be significantly faster for emulators than prior Intel generations, I think it was due to some of the front-end changes but either way, if you wanna emulate games in Dolphin, yuzu, ryujinx, etc then definitely try to go for Haswell or up.
