There is a conductive rubber thing that presses against some circular electrodes on the board. These two parts together make up the switch.. On my controller, there was corrosion on one of the traces (strip of metal circuit on the board) that was supposed to complete the circuit for the button. The corrosion was so bad that it ate though the trace, so I needed to solder a new piece of wire to complete the circuit. Electricity is like water, it needs a complete path to flow upon.. and if there is a break in the wire, it needs to be fixed so the device can work properly again. There could be different issues with different controllers?? Someone said they were able to fix their issue with just cleaning the contacts... The was the problem mine had was corrosion.. and required a more complex solution... Yes I suggest you look around the contact to see if something looks not right.. mind you I am an electrical engineer.. so maybe I took it for granted that some one who is not an engineer, would know what to look for?? On mine, it looked like a bunch of powdery material.. and it should look like solid metal.. so I knew there was probably a problem there.. I hope this helps.. have you looked at the circuit yet?? If so, maybe you can describe what you see to me?..

thanks my friend from Italy, and sorry for my English: I'm not an engineer but I like some time find solution ....looking my main board after cleaning with alcohol I can't see any circuit interruption with my eyes....I try to clean and I substituted the button pad ma nothing ...only this start button doesn't work but is important to enter in double game ( my little doughter want to play always with me )mine I need a multimeter to try only in the circle area and find a interruption... thanks

You can also test the controller while it is apart.. you can put the rubber button on top of the circuit pad where it is supposed to sit, and press it down.. this way you can test the switch without having to reassemble it each time! Also, with it off, you can use on ohm meter to test the switch, by touching either side of the circuit.. you may have to scratch the non-conductive coating on the circuit to get good contacts where your are trying to probe the circuit.. Hope this helps..

@@jaynesnetwork I tried lot of time cleaning an usin the pad button or archer rubber button but nothing I made a picture with microscope I can send to you but I don't see any circuit interruption

Sounds like a problem in the circuit board?? or maybe the contact inside needs cleaning??? that would be an easier fix... if you do take the controller apart.. be warned.. it may never work again! you have to be very careful, and be skilled, to get it back together correctly once again... best of luck!

is the rubber contacts, i replaced them with a new one and it worked fine, but still, i have 2 unusable buttons

It may be time to get a new remote, my little demon slayer?? They should be getting pretty affordable?? Did you try taking it apart??

@@jaynesnetwork i changed the triggers plastic with new ones and got them working. Now i need to try Y button like you did it with A button its a similar problem. I made two old xbox 360 controllers from crap to new! Replacing also analogs. i love this controllers are good for PC as well.

You probably have to do something similar to what I did?? just with the x button instead..

You'll probably need to replace the potentiometer switches. I have an Xbox 360 controller where I have the same issue, and the x button doesn't work. I am debating on whether to send it out to someone to repair. I am no good at soldering.

I am not sure?? I don't have one to work with..Do you see a way to open it up? Sometimes they hide screws under stickers and feet pads..
