Yes, I feel for people who have spent so much on these SCUF controllers. All scuff do is use the insides of a regular controller and put their shell, mod and stick caps on. The stick caps they use are over stressing the analog module inside. ALPS have very pacific specifications on their analog modules and SCUF is / have been ignoring it! Just look at the SCUF sub Reddit. It's a shit show!!

This is an amazing video...I'm so frustrated with my controller, I love the tighter sticks and paddles but the drift is killing me. This repair isn't feasible for me unfortunately. Going to have to look at other options or return to my old elite 1 controller.

I know what you mean. There is a fundamental issue with the tolerance of the parts inside the Series 2 analog sticks. They are aluminum and just don't fit and wear as well as the plastic analog sticks. Inside the analog sticks imagine there are two cylinders one just slightly smaller than the other (think of and old radio antenna) If the outer cylinder is 0.01mm bigger there is no noticeable slop when moved side to side. However if it was 0.1mm bigger not only would feel the slop but the whole stick will move before moving the potentiomiter. They flap in the breeze!

I left a comment on another one of your videos... I would like you to give me a quote on fixing one of my controllers (elite series 2) that was purchased 2nd hand online. I myself can repair most controllers and customize them, but after watching your work and seeing how skillful you are with certain things, I figured I would reach out and see if it would be possible to have you work on this controller instead of attempting to do it myself.

Awesome metal soundtrack and a good fix for an annoying problem that shouldn't even exist in the first place? That's a thumbs up from me! It's weird how the old, bigger stickboxes from the PS3/360 era and earlier don't have nearly this much drift going on. Apparently the life expectancy of these pots is only 417 hours? Not sure how I feel about that... Luckily my Switch Pro Controller (uses the same ALPS stuff) isn't having any issues yet, and it's a lot easier to get into that, but I fear for my Elite V2 now. I've had it for a little over a year now, not counting the 3 I've had to return due to sticky face buttons and non-responsive triggers, and it seems fine, but when I open it up on Gamepad Tester the sticks don't show up as 100% centered. My Switch Pro controller goes back to 0.0000 immediately after I let go of the sticks, but the Elite V2 just kinda hangs around 0.03 on all axes on either stick - you can even see it if you tilt the controller. Seems like centre drift to me, but I've only ever had drift on the map screen of Assassin's Creed 3 and 4 though, never anywhere else, so I'm not sure what to do. Do you take repairs from mainland Europe? And when you say you replace them with a higher quality stick, what do you mean? Higher quality potentiometer? Better spring for tension? I'm just kind of bummed about all this, because the main reason I went for an Elite V2 was the fact that the caps are screwed onto metal rods - I've always had wobbly sticks starting with the Xbox One. You push the stick fully forward, and then at a certain point, it starts to pivot slightly. Completely break immersion for me, and has put me off gaming for quite some time. I've found that I can sort of fix that by applying some insulating tape on the stick before putting the cap on, so it fills out evenly, but that only holds for a few months and doesn't work on every stick (I've also put tape on the back of my R1, R2, ZR1 and ZR2 on my Switch Pro controller as they kept creaking - fixed with tape!). With the Elite V2's glued and screwed on caps, wobble is never an issue, but I dread drift now... Why can't we just have the big potentiometers back that were on the PS1, PS2, PS3, Xbox, Xbox 360 and GameCube? Way better, and way easier to replace (although I do wonder why I never got drift on my Wii U, which uses the exact same stickboxes and is now a whopping 7 years in use).

@@UberMicroRepairs Not to mention, on top of that, a lot of people just simply lack the fine motor skills that you display here. Just the nervousness of fucking up as a beginner can make what you do here in your video feel impossible to them. You've got some pretty steady hands and grip awareness here, especially doing it with gloves on. You're great at what you do and almost make it look too easy. I can see it now though... Someone's gonna come home from the bar one night, drunk off their ass, watch this video due to infuriating left stick click unresponsiveness and horrid re-centering delay that emulates north and south stick drift. After this, the somewhat functional controller will witness some famous last words prior to being retired due to irreparable damage being caused... "I can do that! Hold my beer!" Edit: You probably really could do that though, even if someone was holding your beer. You're pretty good at what you do here. Thanks for the notes of potential breakage when unscrewing the caps.

Hi mate, what exactly are you grabbing with that homemade spanner. Also, any idea why the rt activates the vertical axis on the right stick instead of the trigger itself?
@UberMicroRepairs
@UberMicroRepairs 3 жыл бұрын
If you look at the silver shaft (when the cap is un-screwed) there is a rectangular shape at the bottom of the thread. I was using the spanner to latch onto that part to unscrew the cap. This is not to twist the shaft out of the scissor mechanism wrecking the internals of the module. However I have since learned that the type of thread locker used from the factory loosens up with about 120C of heat applied (for 20 seconds or so) to the cap and it unscrews nicely! When I have replaced the module I apply Blue Thread Lock to the threads to stop the cap unscrewing. For your second question ... That is a good one! I have fixed it several times in the past and is never straight forward. RT activating with the right stick movement can be several things. 1: There is a short between the pins on that potentiometer (this is most likely) 2: The black rectangular connector between the boards has become pulled away from the pads (flux the pins and solder drag across both side of the connector on both boards) 3: There is a trace broken somewhere due to a crack in the analog board (this usually happens with a rage quit and the pad is slimmed dunked face down smashing the analog sticks into the controller) LOL! let me know how you get on?

I used your methed of centering the sticks you told me about on the legion fb group (you may not remember, was a couple weeks back) and fixed the lb being a bit temperamental with a bit of alcohol on the switch. I think you would mainly loose the functionality to replace the thumbstick pad, as the regular analog sticks don't have that metallic piece to add/remove the various thumbsticks. Don't quote me, but overall I believe the potentiometers on most of these controllers are the same.

@UberMicroRepairs
@UberMicroRepairs 3 жыл бұрын
The sticks I use are of better quality than the originals so they feel better and have less slop around the centre. Stick drift is someting that will always eventually happen with use (wear & tear). Some controllers never get it some do. Depends on how much the controller is used and treated I guess.

good vid, i ended up selling my elite 2 because both my sticks had a huge wobble and a big deadzone, terrible controller for gaming
@UberMicroRepairs
@UberMicroRepairs 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks and yeah I can see why you sold it. The mechanism for tensioning the analog sticks is a very bad design. The metal parts are made with bad tolerances so there's slop in the center (think of a collapsible arial where the outer sleeve is too big for the inner sleeve), even though the potentiomiters are in good condition. The standard plastic ones don't suffer from this issue (they have their own issues lol). So with the series 2 I can't see with out a re-design how it will be any good after 6 months use, even new controllers have this slop in them and show signs of center drift. However standard plastic analog sticks will fit. You'll loose the tensioning function but you can either user Elite (series 1) metal caps or the standard plastic ones. On top of that they have metal parts rubbing against plastic which wears out quicker. I'm looking forward to figuring out a good and cost effective solution for the Elite Series 2 controllers. I'm more excited for the new consoles coming out this year as well with their issues.
@GeXExtremist
@GeXExtremist 4 жыл бұрын
@@UberMicroRepairs That's very interesting, thanks for the reply, so are you saying i can solder on standard joystick onto the elite 2 and it will fit? I'v also got an elite 1 controller and found out the weight and metal wears allot quicker compared to the plastic ones, i can barely press down the analog stick button when they are in a forward position but with plastic sticks i can use the stick buttons no problem, iv switched to a standard controller anyway as i like having bluetooth and customized it to my liking but would go back to the elite 2 if there wasn't an issue with the wobble in the sticks and if it was fixable.

Has the Elite Series 2 controller been out long enough to not be under warranty yet? lol this seems like a lot more work than just waiting two weeks from Microsoft. For those that don’t know, they give you a year now. So before you get this desperate, just return it. You get a whole new box even though they tell you to take all the paddles and sticks off... I now have 3 complete sets of paddles, sticks and the little screwdriver. And 3 zippered cases. Eventually I’ll have a enough to sell for parts and will recoup the loss of the initial $180. LOL. Sadly, they still seem to continue to have drift after only a few months of adult quarantine gaming. It’s the best controller with the worst problem.

We advise customers to go through warranty or return to the store, but most people have been there, done that and just want it fixed quickly. Some have opend up the controllers, there are various reasons. Yes the Elite 2 controllers can be drifting right fro the box brand new. We use different analog sticks for the Elite 2's they have nowhere near the amount of slop as the original modules and touch wood no returns.
