One of them is running at 1080p.

Xbox One and PS4 where both released in 2013. The tweet is from 2014. Carmack was already wrong back then. Also, the PS3 had ON PAPER fantastic specs. Only that nobody knew how to squeeze out the according performance out of the very unusual architecture of the PS3. Sure, making the OS as small as possible and interrupt the game execution only if absolutely necessary is a good idea. But that doesn't yield TWO times the performance as Carmack's tweet suggests.

Conenion I was wrong about the relavency of the tweet. but I still stand by comment. the PS3 only had 256mb of ram and the CPU had 8 cells that was pretty under powered after a few years (even if fully utilized). the PS3 could run gta v at 720p at 30 fps. I know a PC with similar hardware couldnt do that even with a very low settings configuration.

Conenion and, yeah. twice the performance is a bit vague and inaccurate.

Carson Pannell fair points although, look at the PS3s os and compare it to windows vista. vista would use atleast half the ram and is immensely harder to run then the PS3s os for the CPU. the gpu may perform the same as a PC due to it running nearly the exact same operations. the CPU and ram on the other hand run nearly twice as well. also, just remembered. when a dev is making a game for PC they have to make sure it runs on ten's of cpus and gpus whereas when it comes to console devs only need to make sure it runs on one set of hardware.

Carson Pannell of course a PC dev can optimise a game and do it amazingly well (playing doom on a 660 ti and it runs insanely well even on a nvidia card :0) but it's a lot easier to do for consoles. because rather then optimizing it to run better with a multitude of amd cards or nvidia cards, it just optimises for one gpu. but the gpus in consoles are pretty much on par with a PCs in performance if they had the same specs, it's the CPU and ram that were low-end. the gpu were always so much better than the CPU in consoles during the PS3s generation (or any generation from the n64s generation to the PS3s). if they ran windows the gpu would be insanely bottlenecked. but because of the light os and other factors it worked for the consoles, with little to no bottleneck.

Punch Down King In theory, if you know exactly what hardware your software is running on, you can figure out how to use those components more effectively. But PC hardware is so far ahead in every way, I don't think there's much benefit anymore, besides being able to churn out console games slightly easier, if you make that platform the priority.

Even if it needs a bit of fiddling with an .ini file most games on PC can have the FOV adjusted to reduce motion sickness. Enjoy what you want, just saying there's still better options :D

Well incorrect to some degree. I don't know anything about the the Xbox kernal, so keep that in mind for what i'm about to say. I do agree think Carmack is correct when he says an apples to apples comparison with PC vs console, will have to console winning. I don't agree with his statement of console being 2X faster since i haven't seen numbers for this test (this hypothetical test) The core reason for this, is focus microsoft put on security since Windows 2000. Removing application, and OS as variables for the speed, the kernal which the OS sits on top of has it's own layer of security which i believe will slow things down. While Xbox one is running a version of windows (why?) i doubt they are using the same kernal(opinion). I think this gives them an edge, in speed. Omar. Please just stop. I think it would've been fairly easy to poke holes in to my arguments. you completely side stepped it, and want to act like you made a valid counter argument. If the kernel had it's security code remove, it would be faster in every way. Doing some googling, i couldn't find any evidence to suggest it has been changed from the windows kernel, which was the crux of my argument. As for optimization being slight better, i doubt it. The bench marks i provided a link to, showed the performance between each version of linux kernel (between a a set of working versions with the same hardware.) It showed a sharp 30% increase or decrease after some versions, and the maintainers weren't doing anything as drastic as i was arguing. Not sure why Carmack was shilling for console back then, but what he states in that tweet is simply, physically impossible. Not to mention that this "2x better, 2x worse" seems too much of a conicidence. Given the equal setup of resolution and graphic quality (as a set of discrete parameters), console of equal specs would have to etch out twice the framerate on average compared to PC. Which is simply not what we can observe.

It was his attempt at explaining things in simplified terms. Rather than 2x the "power" there's a potential 2x performance gain if you're a skilled a programmer as John Carmack working on a game to run on a specific console hardware set as well as a version to run on a variety of PC hardware and then choosing to run it on a PC with a terrible CPU, mediocre GPU and a shared memory system.

yeah the only reason why is that on AMD cpus both the fsb (tied to BCLK uses different multiplier) and cache speeds are tied to the cpu clock. so unlike intel cpus AMD cpus scale significantly better with clock speed. to get faildozer to run at console level performance you would need to do a massive underclock. that being said if we take a look at the ps4 pro it clearly has dual rx 480s with 1/2 the stream processors disabled on each (found bad polaris 10 gpus lol) I'm also guessing these also couldn't hit the minimum 1204MHz clock to be nerfed/binned as a RX 470?

i use Intel CPU's but i prefer AMD GPU's, last time i had an Nvidia it exploded when my comp turned on, havnt had issues with AMD, i mean yeah sure Nvidia might be somewhat faster, (Usually only about 5% - 7%, i mean yeah it deff makes a difference) But AMD is imo better bang for your buck, their price ranges vary soooo much you can almost always find something that fits ur needs and budgets, Nvidia is very expensive, but they are usually faster.

Jammet Leopard it's true that john is a person that should know what he is talking about but that doesn't mean that he can't slip up every once in a while. Maybe in the 360 and PS3 era's they did have 2x the power but ever since consoles switched to x86 architecture the power is comparable to pc. I think if he was interviewed he would say that he was referring to an older generation of consoles or he would just say he was flat out wrong. That still doesn't say anything about the mobile part of the tweet, in which case he might be right because I don't really know much about mobile architectures.

Yeah people forget that the difference in architecture can drastically change results. From the different forums I saw, some claim that the PPC CPU used in the 360 and the Cell architecture only run instructions assigned by the programmer whereas x86 run instructions alongside what the programmer wants. Maybe an x86 CPU would be as twice as slow compared to an equivalent PPC CPU because of the extra instructions that x86 used.
