Hey friends, as you can probably tell we shot this last night from home as soon as we could after the news dropped. The plan was to get it out straight away but by the time we finished recording there was no time left in the day to get it edited! So apologies for delay and the rough recording quality but we wanted to make sure we had some coverage of this up. Cheers! - Josh

This is why Genshin Impact is so popular. Genshin was a huge gamble for them had it failed they would have been bankrupt. The devs behind it refused to be sold and choose to remain privately owned meaning they have no shareholders breathing down their necks and their gamble paid off. They recently released Honkai Star Rail and they have upcoming new game on the horizon as well and they are now one of the biggest privately owned company out there in terms of profit.

No matter how anyone at the Xbox division might feel about their acquisitions over the years, the monolith that is Microsoft only cares about the bottom line. I've hated watching EA buy up and destroy so many great studios the last 25 years. To expect different from Microsoft, just because they're a bigger company, is exceptionally naive.

That's not how Gamepass works, the devs get a budget for said game(s), get paid to make them/make profit for the next game (if it does well), everyone signs for it and knows what's happening.. Gamepass subs pay for the monthly fee at around 400-450M per month,, between subs and hours played everyone gets paid, but sure they've shut down studios like every other gaming studio in history, that's normal, doesn't mean it's good tho.

The timing of Tango getting axed and the reason for them being axed (not meeting sales expectations) is really interesting because Hi-Fi Rush IS coming to the Nintendo Switch. The Switch is currently the top-selling platform and Hi-Fi Rush will no doubt sell really well on that platform. 'Cause had they axed Tango after the Switch release would have made their reasoning even more ridiculous. Also, the whole 'not meeting sales expectations' excuse is even more silly when you consider Gamepass. Let alone the game being shadow-dropped. Funny (but not really) how what's currently happening was stated as possibility while the ABK deal was in the works, but was often dismissed by cheerleaders of the ABK deal. Now some of these same cheerleaders are holding Microsoft in contempt and it's really hard to take them seriously. On a side note, Phil is being more and more pushed into the background. Microsoft is clearly calling the shots now.
@michaellane5381
@michaellane5381 25 күн бұрын
Microsoft might not have been making nearly as many cuts had the deal gone through on time, ABK was an argument without law to stop it, it HAD to go through regardless of hurt feelings, new laws are needed and they need immediate enforcement, but you cannot waste money as an agency fighting corporations on cases you cannot win.

@@michaellane5381 Time has nothing to do with it. Layoffs and downsizing are par for the course on consolidations of this scale, regardless. What's stupid about this particular liquidation is the shutdown of Tango Gameworks, a studio that practically developed the BEST game Microsoft has had in recent memory. Of course a SHADOWDROPPED Gamepass game isn't going to meet sales expectations on the XBOX platform. What did they expect? Whether or not Microsoft actually know what they are doing is continuously becoming more questionable.
@michaellane5381
@michaellane5381 24 күн бұрын
@@DanteMasaru timing in this case has almost EVERYTHING to do with it though. Yes downsizing was inevitable but the deal went over 12 months over schedule and cost Microsoft serious legal fees, that is about 4 quarters of "disappointment" based on income and progress into games that would never be released that ABK wanted and 4 quarters not doing games Microsoft would have wanted. AKA "development hell" if a company gets mad at minimum wage workers wasting hours of effort you bet your ass a developer with multiple programmers doing something at developer pay that never gets released for a year will effect the bottom line. Plus like I said elsewhere if this had happened back when Tango released HFR it would be far more obvious they should have shuttered something like 343 instead.
@DanteMasaru
@DanteMasaru 24 күн бұрын
@@michaellane5381 Yes, exactly my point. You said it yourself: "downsizing is inevitable", thus, how long the deal took to go through is irrelevant. Furthermore, the games developed/published by ABK were games headed to market anyway.

@@DanteMasaru but "downsizing" is not the same as "closing studios" given time studios could have been sold, or just faced layoffs or conversion into a different studio. The Western part of the games industry will crash. Why? We focus way too much on short-term gains over longer-term viability which is why so many of our markets end up in “bubbles” that eventually burst. It also doesn’t help that the executive class that oversees all this LITERALLY never has to TAKE RESPONSIBILITY so they’ll run an industry, company, or market into the ground as they extract as much lavish wealth from it as possible and then just gently float away on their golden parachutes while the entire edifice crashes and burns BEHIND THEM. People think I’m talking crap or being xenophobic or something, but keep in mind, the ONE OTHER TIME in history that we had a major video game crash was when the West controlled the “lion’s share” of the market.

@@ViveLaResistance11011 Actually, Sega are still making video games. Sega's failure in the console space was their own undoing due to repeated poor marketing tactics with Saturn AND the Dreamcast. Just search for any video on the history of Sega for more details that led Sega into becoming a publisher. Yeah, greed is a thing in the corporate world; that can't be denied. However, that is what so many default to whenever there is a price increase and whatnot. Things like currency going down in certain regions or, for a more recent example, the costs of producing video games actually getting more expensive is something that's not often considered. Increased prices is just unfortunate reality in the market. Consider the following: does a company raise the cost of what they are selling or do they axe off their labor in an effort to meet rising costs, thus preventing the company as a whole shutting down? Though many of the recent layoffs in the tech space are due the over-hiring that took place in 2020. Regardless it still sucks and is another unfortunate market reality. You may find this hard to believe, but given the long interval of price increases in the video game space (last price increase was in 2006), gamers have it pretty good compared to some other industries. Also, the market dictates whether or not a price like $60 or $70 being acceptable.

@@DanteMasaru I understand what you are saying, about Sega is a matter of competition and about hardware (competition a precept of capitalism that is in practice a fantasy. You cannot compete if you don’t pay the entering fee, and even though , you don’t have the right shoes for running) The only thing I could say is, instead of buying a AAA, one should buy 5 indies (10, if you take in consideration the market you are buying) if the industry is failing, it’s fair a new industry would born from it ashes. If Latin America m Africa, mid west, Oceania, etc would have their own EAs and CDPRs, the market price of a AAA video game should be lesser (my salary is equivalent to the one of a peasant in the US, and I’m a senior willing to become software architect soon) I know we are all concerned, maybe I’m wrong, but if it were up to me, I would reshape the industry. Big tech companies are surviving by their past achievements, make me think innovation is a thing of the past, nothing is working but there is low effort in making a true change, we are constantly bombarded with the idea “the other is my enemy”, thus, many dialogues are underestimated and we are building bubbles: a “console war”make us think that everything is perfect about my Gamesphere. In the information era subdemocracies are rising, the shareholders are missing if they are against the public. Capitalism needs a RE2 kind of reboot, but in the south we are having a Super Mario 3D All Stars and in the north a Banjo Kazooie emulated in a custom n64 emulator at Switch Online

For example they removed a plague tale innocence a few month (2-3?) after Requiem came out and hell if anyone is new to the series only being able to play Requiem is probably gonna be the most CONFUSING thing to a new player or another example is removing Omori 4 month after its release, just like why? You have other games you can remove and as someone who hasn't finished the story and it just got suddenly removed it's lowkey a heart break ngl. I don't understand personally what xbox is doing and why their removing alot of good games just to add boring ass games (like no one gonna play that mansion simulator game yet they removed Soma)

That comes down to the developers/publishers allowances. They want to make money so removing a game before a majority can finish it might make people buy it. Removing the first game while getting a paycheck from Xbox for a sequel on gamepass might also go back and get sales for the first etc. all these publisher's are doing the math to decide how to try and use game pass to their own profits

Friendly reminder re “the gaming industry”. Nintendo is printing money, CAPCOM is printing money, SEGA is doing fine. Nintendo: focus on quality, gameplay profitable (not subsidized) hardware rather than FPS counts. CAPCOM: double down on quality on their best selling franchises SEGA: largely carried by ATLUS which focuses on JRPGs that are heavily skewed towards the Japanese market - I.e. catering with quality titles to their loyal core audience. Common denominator in all the above? Down to earth business decisions driven by reality as opposed to chasing fads and trends.

This is one of the reasons I VERY RARELY engage in the purchasing of "New" gaming products. This is a hobby I've enjoyed for 30 years and for the past 15 the corporate aspect of the industry is either VERY STUPID or VERY GREEDY and we all know which it is. The only form of protest I have without abandoning my lifelong hobby, which has morphed into a passion, is to not engage in the financial side of the industry by only purchasing USED physical gaming media/hardware bar my steam catalogue, which is permanently installed on my drives just in case they D-list it. A sort of protest where I can, selfishly, indulge in my favorite pastime whilst still, this may be naïve on my end, making my voice heard. I feel overall that until we fix the way the economy incentivizes pure greed worldwide we will not win this fight. No matter how loud you are, money is always louder. Before you say it, Helldivers 2's walk back is fueled by money. It just happens to be aligned with what the players wanted. Make the game playable in more countries; make more money. That's the bottom line. For some reason Sony had a lapse of common sense. I feel the next step, if not called out on it, was to then make PlayStaion Plus required. Or the whole thing was staged to give the players fake confidence in themselves thus causing them to boost in-game sales from people showing how they liked how Sony listened and "came to their senses". We may never know...

It really sucks, especially when its crazy good studios that get axed like this. I feel like there needs to be an explanation because these choices dont make a whole lot of sense. Yeah Arkane Austin had a muckup with Redfall, but everyone knows they were out of their depth with that and didnt want to make it in the first place, and even despite that they still had some really great niche games. And Tango...not many studios can shadow drop a game and have it be as successful as Rush was. Thats rare. Plus, Xbox has been trying to break into the Japanese market for so long now, and Tango was a great way to do that. Xbox owns so many IPs, and has so many studios under their belt before the Bethesda and Activision-Blizzard acquisitions, but most of em arent even doing anything. Hell, if this is the case, how is Double Fine safe? Whats their next game? This strategy that Xbox has just isnt working. Rather than actually working on the IPs and games, they are buying up studios that are already working on stuff, and it hasnt been paying off. Outside of 3rd party titles there is a lack of games on Xbox compared to the competition.

Do the smaller companies have a responsibility to not allow themselves to be sold to these huge gaming corporations? I assume the money is so good it’s hard to turn down but not impossible. Yet you never hear of a small gaming company refuse to sell. Aren’t they culpable as well?
@zanezet
@zanezet 25 күн бұрын
Typically smaller companies end up needing a publisher or something along those lines. The break down for what the devs get after the stores (physical and digital) take their cut, and the publisher's take their cut, and any other piece of the pie that comes out doesn't usually leave much for the development studio. At a certain point there is an appeal to getting scooped by a bigger company. Usually you get a larger portion of the revenue because the publisher takes a smaller percentage because they own you. In theory being owned by a bigger company should also provide a safety net for anything that comes up unseen which you don't have with an independent studio. Smaller companies used to join them for safety and years ago that was a fine idea. Not anymore though.

Prey is one of my favorite games of all times, although the 2017 version was outstanding, however, it did not sell well and the same goes for all the games that were released by this studios. unfortunately, it is a business at the end of the day. put yourself in the CEO shoes, you are surrounded by shareholders who are expecting profits, would you play it safe and satisfy their needs or take the risk with studios that had performed bad commercially and put your career on the line.
