Monolith Soft delivers once again with another brilliant open world role-playing game. This developer has a history of pushing resource-constrained consoles hard, stretching all the way back to the original Wii - so what has Monolith offered up for what is likely its last game for the current generation Switch? And bearing in mind that the studio also contributes to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, is any of the tech seen here potentially applicable to the BOTW sequel?

For developers/artists who wanted to achieve the see through eyebrows/eyelashes effect, one thing you can do is to push the vertices towards the camera while retaining the perspective scaling using shaders. It's pretty cheap on performance and taking advantage of backface culling. Unreal Engine actually has built in material functions to do this.

@@barulicksama3838 It's called "CameraOffset", plugging it to World Position Offset will push the vertices forward to the camera while retaining the perspective scale. For best results, the eyebrow and eyelash cards must have their own material slots, and not part of the skin texture.

Yeah, John is great. I’m sick of other people always saying “this switch game is awesome, I wish it wasn’t crippled by the switch.” While I totally understand and I wish the switch had a little more power to offer too, I think it’s more impressive to get something like XC2 and XC3 running on the hardware it has and I think John agrees seeing the little tablet stretch it’s legs is way cooler.

I love the subtle eye movements they seem to have brought back from XCX, which itself easily has the most beautiful eyes in any game ever. It’s that little touch that brings more life to each character, as human eyes don’t actually stay in place- they move about ever so slightly, and their brains composite what the eyes capture(and erase some data) in order to create a stable image.

@@robwaters8848 You claimed the eye effects in FF7 Remake are being done in a way that a less powerful system like the Switch can't handle. I somehow doubt Square is devoting a significant amount of processing power to eyes of all things. That isn't to say the eyes don't look impressive in FF7 Remake but the idea that the diminished processing power of the Switch couldn't handle something that isn't taking up a significant amount of processing power to begin with is absolutely ridiculous. That was the point I was snarkily making. It's less an issue of processing power and more an issue of Square obviously putting in a ton of effort to make the eyes photo realistic. Obviously, doing so is more practical as well when you aren't rendering such enormous and highly populated locales either. The two games have very different designs in that way. That would be like comparing the character models in Resident Evil 4 on Game Cube and the character models in Grand Theft Auto San Andreas on PS2 and concluding that the PS2 couldn't handle the detail. Sure. The resolution and texture detail were significantly toned down, and the realtime cinematics had to be displayed as FMV, but they pulled off Resident Evil 4 on PS2. The reason for less detail in GTA San Andreas was due to how much bigger the maps were more than the PS2 having less processing power than Game Cube. Does this better clarify things?:)

Before their acquisition, Monolith Soft created the best looking game on the PS2: Xenosaga Episode III. It was not only looking great with detailed character models, sharp textures, cinematic post processing and great colorful lighting, but it was also very modern in terms of pre-loading battles, almost no loading times, a smooth framerate and had a super fast loading menu. It is a technical masterpiece and the greatest hidden gem on the PS2 and aged gracefully. In fact, imo, it is easily the best game on the PS2. When they were acquired, the started concentrating on open worlds instead and created something impressive on the Wii as well. And to this day they keep pushing what Nintendo consoles can do. Edit: I wish there was a DF retro about the progress from Xenosaga Episodes I to III. Episode I looked impressive for its time already, but it's even more impressive what has happened over the course of the series on the same console. Edit2: Oh I spotted Xenosaga Episode IIs intro song in the video. Specifically at 9:28 when talking about higher cutscene length. I know what you did there. :P Btw. Xenosaga Episode I was the very first game to implement this feature that you can pause and decide to skip or continue a cutscene at any time.

Monolith have really outdone themselves with XC3. Another thing to note is that loading times are noticeably shorter due to the game overclocking the switch CPU up to 1785MHz (from a 1020MHz base for both portable/docked). This has already been done on other mainline Nintendo games (there's a DF video about it too), but it's a first for a Xenoblade game. I've had 1 or 2 loading screens that were over 1 minute long but they're definitely shorter across the board. Maybe it was due to my SD card, or something that could be improved with later updates. GPU clocks seem to be the same (768MHz for docked and 384 for portable). I feel like they could've increased it in portable to 460 like we've seen in other switch titles, mainly to smooth out the resolution scaling and performace, but it seems like they went for a battery-saving approach like in previous Xenoblade games. Overall portable mode has definitely improved with the upscaling technique and has a way better image quality compared to Xenoblade 2.

I would say that XBC3 has higher overall texture resolution and more geometry than XBC2. XBC3 has way bigger landscapes and more verticality. Gormott in XB2 was quite "dense" in terms of foilage (I wish more of XBC2 was as lush as Gormott). I loved both games either way... maybe XB2 a little more.

I'd highly recommend playing through the first two first. The stories are excellent, specifically the 1st. It's a wild ride. Just get the Definitive Edition on the Switch. As for the 2nd, it's really good however the story is enhanced if you have played the first game. This game will be greatly enhanced if you've played the first two. If you do decide to do this, welcome to the series. It's a great franchise that really invests you.

As someone who has completed all prior games in the series multiple times each and has currently sunk 60-ish hours into Xenoblade 3, I can safely say this is by far the worst game in the franchise. Unless something drastically changes within the second half of the game, It's a definitive step down from the previous games in practically every regard. Each of the previous games had a similar level of overall quality. Certain titles excelled in differing fields than others. For instance, Xenoblade 1 has by far the best and most likable main cast in terms of their characterization/development. Xenoblade X has the most robust and satisfying gameplay mechanics particularly relating to combat and character builds. X also has the best graphics by a pretty wide margin, but the art style is pretty divisive since it attempts to go for a more muted, realistic vibe than the rest of the franchise. Many fans also consider X's narrative delivery to be the weakest, but personally I disagree. Story is definitely less of a focal point overall though. Xenoblade 2, on the other hand, has the best story by a country mile. I'd also say in terms of artistic direction it is the most aesthetically pleasing out of all entries in the series. Character designs are a pretty divisive topic (particularly, the voluptuous/scantily-clad female designs), but I'd say subjectively they are the strongest, most iconic designs we've gotten in a Xeno game to date. While all the previous games have different strong points, they more or less even out when considering their individual weaknesses. I'd give the edge to Xenoblade X but only because I'm the type of gamer that prioritizes gameplay over story. Many JRPG fans care about the narrative delivery more than satisfying gameplay, and for that subset of gamer I would definitely recommend Xenoblade 2 as their best entry point into the series. Xenoblade 1 is an extremely solid game when viewed in a vacuum. However, it was surpassed completely by X and 2 in terms of gameplay & story respectively. Of course, a story-focused gamer may prefer to begin with Xenoblade 1 so they can fully appreciate everything Xenoblade 2 has to offer, since there is definitely some prerequisite knowledge that makes Xeno 2's story hit much harder than it would for someone going in blind. Therefore, my recommendation for you Neo G, would be the following: If you care primarily about story and character development start with Xenoblade Definitive Edition on Switch, and then once you are done follow up with Xenoblade 2. If you care primarily about gameplay and graphics, go for Xenoblade X (either via Wii U or Cemu emulator, or perhaps wait until we get a definitive edition on the Switch Pro or whatever lol). But regardless of what you do, I cannot in good faith recommend going for Xenoblade 3 as your entry point in the series. If all prior games were roughly around a 8.5/10 or 9/10, I'd say Xenoblade 3 is like a 5/10 so far. I cannot imagine the last half of the game improving upon every single element to such an extreme degree to compensate for how utterly devoid of quality it has been for the first 60 hours of content. But at the end of the day it's your money, you can spend it however you prefer. I just think If I had started with a game as lackluster as 3 I would have never become such a massive fan of the series because I likely would have dropped it around the 30 hour mark. Based on how large a delineation of quality there is between previous games in the series and 3, I heavily suspect those inflated review scores are paid off... But that's just my own perspective on the matter. ^-^ You may feel differently.

Honestly, I'd LOVE to see more Switch games use the performance of the Switch in Portable mode as it's basis for building the game, and then simply add enhanced performance features on to that for when in Docked mode. Don't up the resolution or anything, but give us better framerates. Or even better, would it be even possible to offer VRR at say 40FPS on the Switch for those with 120Hz displays? That would be a freaking awesome tradeoff & benefit for a game running at 720p 30FPS normally in portable mode but with smoother motion docked. Considering the performance increase simply isn't enough in most cases to go from 30FPS to a full 60FPS, this seems like it would be a nice tradeoff. I really hope we get a new Switch sooner rather than later, we really need a more powerful Switch! I really hope Nvidia is taking such a possibility seriously & is deveoping the best & most powerful next gen chipset they possibly can that could be used in a new Switch! In fact, speaking of which, they should simply have two different models available at launch. A basic "Switch Lite" type model & a "Switch Pro or OLED" type model. One being 300 and the more advanced one being 400 at launch. That way they wouldn't have to compromise on performance to keep the cost down but could compromise on features like dockability & screen size out of the box instead.

Feels like nowadays people put too much focus on sheer fidelity instead of the strong artistic direction put into games like Xenoblade Even on the geriatric hardware that is the Switch, the vistas present in all 3 games (and probs X but haven't played) are absolutely gorgeous. It's a no brainer but it's for some reason easy to forget you don't need top of the line hardware to make such incredible things that Monolith does. Their environmental design is on another level honestly. Night time in the Urayan titan in 2 for example is simply stunning. Hope when Nintendo finally puts out a more up to date piece of tech, Monolith can push even further for what they can create.

On the note of the performance, while it is certainly gonna dip in the busier fights, it hasn't really dipped under ~22 ish frames in my experience, and it's also generally not overly distracting despite still being generally noticeable. With how intricate the combat is and how many variables there are to take note of, the infrequent framedrops tend to not have a huge impact due to that.
