This shoot-out really surprised me. The least expensive radio seems to perform the best here. It is a comparison between the Qodosen SR-286, XHDATA D-808, XHDATA D-608WB, XHDATA D-368, Tecsun PL-368 and Eton Elite Traveler III.
The signal is Shan News Radio, a clandestine station that targets Myanmar. The station itself is located in Chiang Mai, Thailand. The transmitter is in Al Dhabbaya, UAE, with azimuth of 90 degrees, so directly to the east from the UAE. Received in Johannesburg, South Africa.
The station transmits during my daytime, 12:30 UTC to 13:30 UTC. Because the signal is aimed directly east from the UAE, it is not strong at my location, but quite clear enough. This is an interesting and unusual signal, and an unusual result in my comparison. The signal weakened a bit during my comparison, but I think you can still get a good idea of how the different radios perform.

Hello André, thanks for the extensive shootout here! Well, if you ask me, I'd really call it a draw between the SR-286 and the D-368, or at least too close to call. The D-368 benefits from its (fixed) lower bandwidth in this case to dampen the white noise IMHO, but the voice sounds clearer to me on the SR-286. It remains quite a surprise seeing this cheap little radio on par with the Qododen that's almost 6 times its price. The other radios clearly are below here. The D-608 being so noisy is no surprise to me, but I didn't expect the PL-368 to bring in so much noise that sounds like local RFI to my ears. Again, there's also a lot of signal fading during the shootout, the last part with the D-368 is not so clear anymore.

Hi there Alain, thanks for your comment! Like you, I was very surprised by the noise on some of the radios, this was during daytime. Theoretically, there should be very little RFI at that time. My house electricity was switched off, as I usually do when working with weaker signals. No street lights. But perhaps still some noise from neighbours. You are taking a bit more objective approach in your assessment. I think you are right. The SR-268 and the D-368 perform very similarly. The difference in dampening the white noise is certainly due to the lower bandwidth on the D-368. But the voice does sound clearer on the Qodosen. Still, as you say, quite remarkable that this little D-368 actually outperformed all the others. Seems to be a very well-designed radio. Of course, as we both know, another test at another time might yield completely different results. One test is never final, not in the world of HF radio signals :-)

Very interesting surprised by the noise level on some but almost always the voice was clear. The winner Xhdata against all the others I am pleasantly surprised. Thank you

Thank you Terry! I myself was surprised by the noise on the PL-368 in particular. I actually also checked the signal on my PL-360 but it was so noisy that it was almost inaudible, so I did not include the PL-360 in this video. All the radios here, in the end, did quite well to pick up the voice of the announcer clearly.

Hi there Lithesh, thanks for your comment! I agree with you, it is a very sensitive radio and works very well to pull in distant signals.

The experiment conducted was highly interesting, yielding unexpected results. This video effectively showcases the viability of cheaper SI4732*-based DSP receivers vs. the overhyped/overpriced (as some would say) TEF6686-based receivers. Also it highlights the significance of circuitry, even when utilising similar chips and main circuit components. Some receivers may outperform others due to the optimal alignment of the antenna with the chip. While I lack expertise in this area, it's evident that even minor differences in circuitry can have a substantial impact. As an example, I have a small board to power a min-whip antenna, comprising just five components (two capacitors, two resistors, and an inductor). When externally connected between a receiver and any passive antenna, it noticeably enhances reception in a completely passive manner, IDK why.

Thank you very much for your comment! I agree with you, I think it shows that some of the cheaper Si372* chips can work very well. I do think the Qodosen SR-286, in the end, is still an excellent radio and it performs really well, most of the time much better than any of the radios with the Silicon Labs chips. But with good engineering, like on the D-368, the Si372* chips can work wonders.

@@swlistening True, the high-end hybrid DSP Tecsun receivers (such as the H-501), which don't even mute while tuning manually, are still based on SiLabs chips. By the way, to further challenge the SR-286, there should be a tough use case where your PL-368 may prevail due to its synchro-detection feature - overlapping weak and strong nearby radio stations. Thanks & 73!

To my ears - at least through the internet - Qodesen and D-808 was the most understandable. D-368 was less noisy than the others, but also more muffled.

Hi there Joe, thank you so much for your comment and for the suggestion. I don't know if you have a text voice reader and if it can read the description of the videos? In the video description, I usually list the different sections of the video according to time, it is right at the end of the description. That might help, for now. But what I will do in future is to mention the radios in full order before I start with the playback of the radio recordings, I hope that will help.

Hi Harpreet, indeed, you did! And that is one of the reasons why I got this radio (it was actually sent to me as a review copy, together with the D-608WB). I am surprised at how good it actually is. I plan to do a full and detailed review of it over the coming weeks. I think a comparison with the D-219 will be interesting, I will do that.

that was the filter bandwidth on the qodosen? i feel like the d-368 has the same narrow filter as the d-219, which makes it sound more dark but with less interference. i think it is only 2khz on the 219, might be the same on the 368
@swlistening
@swlistening 23 күн бұрын
I think that's it, the narrow bandwidth on the D-368 means the sound is a bit more muffled but less noisy and less interference. I'm not sure it's as narrow as 2 kHz though, maybe 3 kHz? The Qodosen was set at 4 kHz, the D-808 also at 4 kHz, and the PL-368 at 3.5 kHz.

@@swlistening i am pretty sure the d-219 is on 2khz bandwidth. certainly sounds like it when comparing it to a pl-380 at 2khz. maybe worth a video comparing the bandwidth to the qudosen etc. ;)

@@KekmanForTheRestOfTheWorld Yes, I think you are right about the D-219. But the D-368 sounds a little bit wider to me. A video is a good idea, to try to figure out what the bandwidth is on these two.
