Well here is quick simple project that went bad quickly. I found my fairly recent valve cover seal replacement was allowing a slight leak into cylinder 2 and 4 plug ports. So this fifteen minute job became a two hour job. Fortunately no extra parts where required and everything is good now. I just got a new camera and I am still learning it's abilities. Please forgive the sudden quality change at the end do to switching to phone after batteries ran out on new camera.

Thanks for the video. I have the same issue . My local auto parts sales the ignition coils at $109 each, I found a set of 8 for $159 at carparts on line. Have you had any issues with the $200 set you used?

I would recommend a tampon, instead of a rag to absorb the oil in the spark plug chamber. Just thanking Out Of The Box.

Possibly not sure how well they would hold up after absorbing the oil or how cost effective they are.

Tampons hold about 2 Teaspoons for regular. I think it's worth a try.

Jaguar has a very specific numbered torque pattern for this job. Very important.

Agreed. I got that info after this and found the pattern I used was slightly different but it is holding still. Jag fallowed a center out pattern as well but a bit more of a top to bottom movement compared to the cross pattern I used.

I just completed this on my XK8 and noted that the upper rear cam cover bolts are different from the rest. Apparently this is due to these bolts being close to the cam position sensors and are a different metal bolt.

Thanks for this. I have an oil leak and am wondering if I can fix it myself. My mechanic wants to replace both camshaft covers but I should first check to see if they are warped or if the seal is bad yes? This looks like a job I could do myself, but would prob take 3x as long as the mechanic but save some $$$!

Defiantly get your hand on a manual is always the best thing. Even your best professionals will use the manual. Next is yes, check the valve (cam) covers for warpage. Some is ok and can be solved with proper sealants (RTV, etc.). Never pull your covers while the engine is warm this can cause warpage. Always fallow torque specs. Also be sure to keep your open engine covered so debris doesn't get in. Once again the manual is your best friend. Just make sure it is for your year, make and model. Best of luck.

Holding great. But do change the seals if they are old. They can start splitting and the silicon will be useless there.

Sorry for the delay. I used the TRQ brand from Amazon. They came in a set of 8 coils and rubber plug connector PN: ‎ICA61610. They where about $150.00 for the set. I have had them in over two years and no issues. They also have a Life Time Warranty part only.

Thank you very much for posting this. I’m on the fence of buying a 1999 XK8 convertible, the owner is a family friend and told me the only issue is an oil leak. It has 76k miles and cosmetics are in excellent shape. Do you recommend going for it? He’s selling it to me for $5,000

I have a hard time recommending any specific car I have not checked over myself. But I do have to say on a general point the XK8 is a good car overall if you are willing and able to do some repairs. DIY most defiantly the cheaper way but do expect to work on it from time to time. My suggestion like many others is educate your self as it looks you are and be thorough when checking the car over. If it is running ruff be super careful due to the possible Nikasil cylinder linings could be damaged. This is worse than the timing chain needing replacement. The engine block would have to be replaced or re-sleeved at a machine shop if this is present. Hope not to scare you and do enjoy if you pick it up they are great road trip cars. As for price I suggest NADA web site for reference.

You should 'side gap' your plugs while you have them out. I stay away from RTV silicones and would recommend Hylomar M instead. Otherwise you made superb videos and you know your stuff. Were you military?
@weekendwarriorgarage4402
@weekendwarriorgarage4402 4 жыл бұрын
The plugs where gaped when I replaced them about a year ago (3000 miles), so no need at this time. I use RTV due to it being recommended by many auto manufactures. RTV is also quite easy on the wallet. I do agree there are options to sealing and you should use what you are comfortable with. I worked and trained as a BMW service tech through the 90's and early 2000's.

@@weekendwarriorgarage4402 I work on aircraft and Hylomar M is the gold standard. I wouldn't bring RTV anywhere near my car. Maybe a bathtub.

I have no need for side gaping. This is usually for trying to squeeze as much power out of the car as possible. I am not trying to build performance just make it reliable. This also shortens the life of the plug and I do drive my car regularly. I would rather not have to re-gap or replace plugs more often. The one good thing you do gain from this is possibly a small boost in fuel mileage.
@weekendwarriorgarage4402
@weekendwarriorgarage4402 4 жыл бұрын
Aircraft have a much higher standard to maintenance do to the fall out of the air factor. I worked on many types of cars at a factory service center and many part kits came with RTV. It holds quite well. I will say having to clean up after it is a chore. Especially if it is poorly ( excessively ) applied. I also look at the cost. I don't need a $20.00 part when a $5.00 part will do the job. That being said I don't skimp on safety parts like brakes.
