Jaguar XKR project this week:
In this episode we replace all 8 spark plugs and coil packs on the V8 engine

Enjoying the journey of the Jag. Hope the knocking is ok. I have a ‘98 XK8 so this is interesting. I’ve never had that knocking so can’t advise. Definitely check timing chains and tensioners though. When I replaced mine the plastic tensioners were shot. Changed original plastic thermostat housing too as it was cracking. Looking forward to next video.

Hi buddy, thanks for getting in touch. I appreciate the advice, and will deffo be going deeper into the engine to find out what's knocking, hoping it's nothing too serious. While I'm there I may as well go the while hog and check out the chains and tensioners. I'm glad you're enjoying the videos so far. Thanks again, Simon

Nice job Simon. That knocking noise would really concern me though. The other thing I'm concerned about is that you might get this very poorly XKR sorted and then not be able to help yourself chopping it in for another basket case. Glutton for punishment!

Thanks gerard, the knocking is deffo a concern, but it's all fixable once I find out what it actually is! I do like a challenge, so who knows what new projects are in my future 😃

Only the left hand side has Jaguar written on it Simon. Interestingly on the 2005 cars they didn't bother at all 🙂

@@projectsinthebarn Yeah i've just checked and XK8's have Jaguar V8 on both sides which is why it looks like XKR's should have too. It's a bit confusing eh?

Order a set of coil packs only to find half already done. That'd be my luck as well.

Hi Andrew, no bother at all buddy. I bought mine from ebay in the end, cost around £130 delivered. The original denso ones are approx £80 each, and as much as would have liked to get them, with more pressing engine issues likely I just went after market. I obviously cannot vouch for them as i haven't tested them properly yet, but worth a punt at that price in my opinion. Sounds like that you've got a hydraulic lifter losing oil pressure, or stuck closed, watching and listening on video it seems that you may still have a misfire. As you said, oil and filter change and two cans of Wyns or equivalent, if no significant improvement then it’s a big job, sorry to say this.

Hi buddy, I agree. It does give that kind of sound. I've been led to believe that it has shims and not hydraulic lifters, so maybe a stuck valve or 2, which would give me the same running issue, I guess. I have just returned from an automotive shop and purchased a can of wynns, so let's see what happens. It's all just nuts and bolts, so I'm sure we will get there one way or another 😃
