Hi Nathan. Another insightful informative presentation, come to expect nothing but the best from you. Just touching on the brake adjustment. The recommendation of 8 clicks release came with hydraulic drum brakes of yesteryear, it was an old school mechanics adjustment, in a time when brake force was controlled by fluid pressure. In my opinion it simply doesn't stack up on electro magnet brakes. Why? The electro magnet is mounted on a pivot leverage arm. The arm replaces the hydraulic slave cylinder in afore mentioned hydraulic system. The more you back the adjuster off, the further distance this arm has to pivot prior to brake pressure, it's a pendulum basically. The lengthened pivot allows additional pendulum momentum resulting in brake grab. In crude terms, the magnet clamps onto the revolving drum, flings until resistance of brakes shoe pressure causes magnet to now slide against face of drum brake. Pendulum effect needs to be minimised, to achieve that I use the following method. Turn adjuster to shoes are in contact with drum, then apply park brake firmly as this force centres the brake shoes within the drum (shoes float). Release park brake and check if any further adjustment required (if mechanism has not been service for a long time, usually yes, additional adjust required hence repeat applying park brake again etc.) Release park brake. Now only wind adjuster back enough to allow the wheel to rotate, slight resistance, usually 2-3 clicks achieves this. This method eliminates the pivot of the actuator arm, reduces pendulum effect eliminating initial brake grab. Basically, as soon as magnetic force applied, magnet bonds to the drum outer surface pivots a miniscule amount before resistance of brake pads is applied, no pendulum momentum effect prior to brake shoe force being applied. I came across the 7-8 release clicks talking to a chap from a brake centre one time. Once I demonstrated the workings of the electro magnet mechanics to him & how that release volume created the pivoting pendulum effect, he was in agreement it was too much. Thats just my thoughts on it all. Just wanted to share my years of experience on the issue.. Best of Christmas to yourselves & your viewers Regards, Wealie.

Mate, I'm blown away by your effort with this reply. Brilliant information. if Nathan doesn't cover this in his video, perhaps you could make one yourself? Thanks for such an informative reply.

@@iangoodwin345 all's good Ian, appreciate your reply but won't be doing a video myself as I'm not tech savvy, but I do have some nouse on brake maintenance as I was in the caravan industry, (sales/service) for 6 years, learnt a trick or two in that time. I purposely displayed & demonstrated electric brake operation (backing plate with electromagnet & shoes, a drum with machined magnet surface & shoe surface, plus a selection of brake controllers) to potential buyers so they clearly understood the workings of basically an unknown braking system that was required by law. N.B. At this moment I would also demonstrate how to adjust the brakes shoes via cam adjuster to overcome grabbing brakes (pendulum effect). Once I delivered a van I'd take the new owners out onto a back road, demonstrate how the electric brake controller worked, emergency actuator, how to utilise to control sway, then have them drive & adjust the brake controller to experience different settings and the effect so as to have a clear understanding of the system. It probably won't surprise you, but the number of people I came across towing vans with an electric brake controller installed with no concept of what it was or how to adjust it nor operation of the emergency actuator. We prided ourselves on sales, delivery, on going maintenance to our client base. Our service devision was renowned throughout the entire caravan industry. Company changed ownership, customer service fell by wayside for immediate sales, hence business fell off, all experienced staff (myself included) left, I've since retired but the chap whom used to manage service (whom had also left) has since purchased back the run down business, has expanded the business, relocated into larger premises, then had the new premises enlarged over onto the block next door, let's just say he had a massive amount of caravan maintenance knowledge & a huge following of clients from past. I loved my time in the industry, it was like being on holidays every day, but getting paid to do something I or actually we (all staff) so enjoyed until the new owners took over. Bit of a ramble, but now you know where I'm coming from.

Excellent. We (wife and I) did a two day towing course as part of a Certificate IV in recreational vehicles. They gave us a good rundown on the operation of our Redarc electric system from a drivers perspective, not a maintenance perspective. I am confident with the operational aspects of the proportional braking etc. After 12 months of operating, I'm now getting brake grab at low speeds when stopping at roundabouts, give way signes etc. I've adjusted the controller to a lower level, but I would be keen to learn how to check the brake set up to ensure optimum brake performance rather than just fiddle knobs on the dash. Best wishes for your retirement. Thanks again for taking the time to reply. Regards, Ian

Such an excellent and educational video, Nathan. We're just about to hit the road again for a few months so servicing the van is definitely on the radar. Lots of information and well presented. Thanks so much for sharing. Hope you're all doing well.

I'm not a mechanic in any shape or form. However, I certainly do visual inspections around and under the van. I would not have the confidence to remove wheels and disassemble hub and brake components. Too scared at what happens if I stuff up. I happily pay my dealer for an annual service and I have fingers crossed that they are on the ball with all their checks. Thanks again Nathan for your usual comprehensive and informative review.

Cheers Ian 👍 It certainly can be a little daunting, however with some practice it's not too bad. I've got a bearing/brake video coming out this weekend that might be of help? Hopefully this can at least get others to check some extra components before hitting the highway! 👍

My guess is that most people towing a trailer do not regularly check and service them. Couplings, brakes and lights are the basics. But we still see dodgy trailers on the side of the road!
@XploringOz
@XploringOz 8 ай бұрын
For sure, I can believe that. It one of those things that's sidelined by the servicing of the tow vehicle and people forget the pressures and strains placed upon these trailers.

Travelling long term as you were, would you still perform these checks annually or more often during that time?
@XploringOz
@XploringOz 8 ай бұрын
Definitely more often. Each item is slightly different, things like suspension and tyres pressure are checked regularly, especially when on rough roads. I replace the bearings every 20,000kms and this is when I would go around and do checks like this 👍
