In this video we go over our basic camping setup for our family, with two kids. I go over all the gear we take when taking it back to basics.
From where our gear goes, what gear we use and how to pack/store it in the cruiser, this video will give you idea’s on how to prepare for your next family exploration.
Camping with kids can almost seem impossible these days, with all the ‘luxuries’ and ‘must have’ items that seem to find their way into the car, storage and packing room is always a premium. Don’t let this stop you getting you and your family out into the great outdoors.

Bloody legend mate. Those tents are such a great idea. My fiancé and our kids and dog aren’t fitting inside the tent easily anymore all together. This is such a great idea. Love the rollers in the back of the vehicle. Genius.

We've just recently upgraded to a 200 series landcruiser from an old dual cab hilux, and are finding your informative videos very helpful. Thanks heaps for all the explanations and your thoughts/reasoning behind what you do. It's really helping with the planning of our very slow build. I've been searching for a very long time, and yours is the first video I've come across going through a family set up in a 200 series, without towing a trailer or caravan. Thank you!! We're a family of 5, with all 3 kids old enough not to need child seats, and not wanting anything under their feet. After being used to a tray with a canopy, I've been playing a fair bit of mental tetris while waiting for our roof rack, trying to figure out if we can continue to fit everything in that we need, without also getting a trailer or caravan! (They're on our one day, eventually wish list). Not liking the GVM weight issues either, so will see how we go!

Thanks mate, I'm glad to hear that these videos are providing some sort of benefit to you and your family. I must say, after towing a van for some time, it definitely takes some time to get used to fitting everything in the vehicle, however practice, repetition and compromising what you actually need is the trick to a light weight and efficient camp setup. I hope to have some more tips and tricks in the future now that we have sold the caravan. Thanks for watching. Cheers, Nathan.

The Oztent RVs do fold down fast as long as you are using absolutely none of the accessories. If it's raining, windy or you need extra shade, the awning, fly and main tent all need the whole guy ropes, pegs and poles palaver.

Great rundown thank you. Had a similar setup in a smaller 4wd but kids have outgrown having stuff under them so now refitting on different vehicle. Can't quite make the leap from Coleman instant to RX yet.. poor back means 5kg lighter is worth the extra 4 minutes setup. Like the waterproof linen storage and impressed with the durability of your solar. Appreciated the awning comments, I've not got one yet bc I felt I wouldn't use it much. Never realised how useful the fridge surround is.
@XploringOz
@XploringOz 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks mate. Yeah, I'm dreading the time when the kids are going to need all that rear seat room, will have to move some things around. In the end, a tent is a tent, as long as it keeps you dry and out of the wind, that's all that matters. To be honest, I'm very impressed with the solar setup. I have a dedicated video on the channel regarding how and why I set that particular panel up. Buying the cheapest eBay panel I could find, I wasn't expecting it to still be working and working at the same capacity a year later. The awning can be great in some circumstances and for certain setups, I personally just don't seem to use them that much. I just see so much advertising regarding them, its almost as if you need a awning if you plan on 4WD'ing. I just don't believe the hype that goes along with them. Thanks for sharing mate. Cheers, Nathan.

Cool setup, but two Rv4's up there, on the roof, with all that other gear? Crazy stuff! Funny how we all have different ideals with our camping/4wding setups. Our setup is based on how light and affordable we can keep it, without being uncomfortable. I ditched the overpriced and heavy Rv oz tent idea and went with a cheap, light and compact Colman instant/up 4p gold series. Is nearly 10kg lighter up there where it counts and is similar time to setup. It's been a truly great tent. Another difference is that we rely on our vehicle awning a lot! Shade and shelter when it rains, it rains nearly every time we go camping, haha. Wouldn't be without it.
@XploringOz
@XploringOz 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, they are very heavy units. I love the tents, but there weight and long pac up size is definitely their downfalls. I like your idea and how you have managed to keep your weight down, I guess like you said, everyone has their own individual setup. I agree with the awning and I've recently upgraded ours and will soon be doing a video review on a roof rack reorganise. Cheers, Nathan.

This tip may, or may not work for you. I decide where I want to position the OZ-tent RV3 and then reverse my small SUV into position. Starting from the back of the vehicle I lay out a netted ground sheet though this is optional. I then position the RV3 so that when the awning is erected it will just reach to the back of the vehicle. When erected the front of the awning just touches the top of the rear of the SUV or the top of the flip-up rear door of the vehicle in your case. Now the back of the vehicle containing your fridge and extra supplies has effectively become an extension of the tent and this is very practical. The second tip is that using a cordless drill and screw-in tent pegs will halve the time taken to erect a RV3 especially if you set up a fly sheet as well. The negative is that the screw-in tent pegs are pricey and I needed two packs and you might need up to four packs for two tents. Using the same power-pack of the cordless drill I also have a portable compressor with which to inflate tyres and a cordless LED work light as well as a 220v charger and another charger providing 2 USB A ports using the power-pack which using USB powers an amber-coloured strip of fairy lights originally sold as Christmas decorations. If it is very hot, I would take along a cordless fan to cool down the tent at night as well as a second cordless power pack. Yes it is bulky but these cordless tools using the same power packs have become indispensable.

mate, for non impact rated cargo barrier, check out Kaon for a off the shelf solution... otherwise for DIY cut a rated cargo barrier (with upper bracket attached to third row grab handle) in half, so the bottom of barrier just goes just below the rear seat - you might need to weld a cross bar at the bottom of the cut barrier - fabricate the lower mounting bracket to the inner rear fenders with nutsert or better a welded nut bracket. The Now you have a rated barrier which hardly takes up extra space - plus you mount hang light stuff off the rear cargo barrier. Barrier is not just for crash - emergency braking can sent stuff flying towards the front question: can you have a look at the brand/contact details/manufacturer of the gray plastic tucker box - bunning stop selling those last year - and i cant find them anymore... thanks
@XploringOz
@XploringOz 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I have seen some of the gear by Kaon, I might have a look at what they offer and see how hard it would be to adapt to my current setup. My Maxtrax brackets for the Rhino roof rack platform are actually made by these guys. I guess I'm just worried about losing some of that precious cargo space, but I definitely see the safety aspect of it. Chers, Nathan.

Yeah, I understand the risk, this is another reason I tie the two cans together, makes them physically to big to fit through the gap. Saying this, obviously items don’t stay together in the event of the worst case situation. If I can find one that will fit the drawers and doesn’t impede on the space too much, it’s on the list. Thanks mate, appreciate the feedback. So the weight, along with the packed length (almost 2m) are the only two down sides for these tents. (I'll go over full details in a later review video) However, the RV4 in particular weigh's in at about 23kg. Cheers, Nathan.

I like this setup. I notice you had a pic in there of the two Oztents connected via the awning. Is this something you do often, or is it a pain to set them up like that - to get the positioning right etc?
@XploringOz
@XploringOz 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks mate. Yes, we do connect the Oztents together via the awnings. It's only something we do when we are setting up for a little while, say about 3 days or more. Is isn't too hard to get right once you've got it sorted. We generally set one tent up, peg it down, then open the second and work away from one to the other. Seems to work well and having them joined provides a huge enclosed space between them, definitely something worth the setup in my opinion. Cheers, Nathan.

Hi mate, very good video. We are on the start of doing all this. My brother recc the Oz RX4 tents but on product review website, there are a lot of negative reviews eg shrinking, no support etc. What's your take on these vs say Coleman or Oz Trail. Cheers James

Great video, lots of ideas. I like the idea of the fridge box/cover. Could i see catches so it can be removed? Nice to see you guys out without an RTT, but guess the caravan compensates. Those Oztents are on our list. Where do you stash ur tools and stuff? I was against a panel on the RR, but you make it work, so will think about that again!! thx

Thanks mate, yeah I’m very happy with the rear drawer setup. I have a whole lot more detail, including the clips in my video of the rear setup on my channel 👍 So I don’t carry a huge amount of tools, however most of them are stored In the left hand drawer. That solar panel has got to be one of my favourite mods. It was super cheap and is still just as effective after a year of use. Again, o have another video dedicated to the solar panel install. Cheers, Nathan.

How long do those 2kg gas bottles go eg a week's camping? 2 weeks?
@XploringOz
@XploringOz 3 жыл бұрын
Really depends on what you plan on using. If we are just using the stove, yes we'll easily get 2-3 weeks from a 2kg bottle, but if we bring a Weber BBQ, then it will reduce it and any form of hot water system would significantly reduce the time. Cheers.

Thanks mate. I had a quick look when putting this video together and couldn’t seem to find one. I’m sure they would be something like this out there, maybe just not this particular model.

Hey Ben, so I did some more digging, turns out the brand is Companion, not Coleman. So you can still buy them. www.snowys.com.au/pressure-shower Cheers, Nathan.

Yeah mate, we don’t actually carry a toilet. Shovels with bio-degradable toilet paper works for shorter trips. To be honest though, a toilet is never too far away, it would only be a day or two that you are isolated, unless your doing the CSR or something like that.
