I mean DnD is basically 6 hours of "you had to be there," which doesn't often translate well into funny.
@entr3_nou5
@entr3_nou5 2 жыл бұрын
Probably why a lot of DND official stories and film adaptations don’t work either. They’re just basic fantasy stories with the title slapped on. People think of D&D movies having a bunch of injokes related to tropes they’ve experienced, and unless the director plays the game religiously it’s not gonna work

isn't the problem way more general than that? social media "humor" in general is 95% people fishing for upboats by repeating the same jokes - in mild variations if they're feeling adventurous, over and over again.

This applies even more to stories that are at least somewhat funny to hear second-hand. For example, Tiefling character exploited fire-damage immunity to shoot herself out of a cannon, only to fail the "Acrobatics" check to land without bludgeon damage.

Storytelling! Remember in an age when literacy was rare, and written records didn't last very long or were prohibitively expensive to produce, information would be spread by word of mouth, and in narrative form. Funnily enough that sea-dwelling vampires idea is used canonically in Vampire: the Masquerade. There are offshoots of Gangrel and Nosferatu Kindred that live in the ocean since a) they don't breathe, b) they can sustain themselves on schools of fish easily, and c) they can rest in caves or deep enough in the ocean that sunlight doesn't reach. Means easy living too since they rarely if ever come into contact with humans and thus don't need to worry about the Masquerade and keeping themselves hidden :D Theoretically any Kindred in VtM could do this, the only ones that can't are the ones with certain bane restrictions. There are Folklore Banes (if I'm remembering the name correctly anyway) where things like religious symbols and running water/currents hurt them and put them into a beastial frenzy, the usual stuff from traditional vampire lore. It's cool.

I figure out a couple key moments I want to happen, and whenever I feel like they should happen amid the party doing what they feel like doing and having to react to all of it, it happens to move the story along. I got so tired of spending so much time trying to make big elaborate stories on purpose that never made it past the first session or two before they invariably became something else anyway that I just can't do it anymore.

In the group I play 5E with, whenever the DM gets out of his chair, his cat jumps into it and pops up to survey everything behind the screen, then stretches further to look over the screen at everyone. The standard thing is to tell the guy when he comes back that his co-DM told us we'd all advanced a level, and each discovered an uncommon magic Item, our choice. The first time I'd loudly announced having stuffed several items into my /bag of holding/ and one of the others had been using magic armor in combat before someone started using his /jug of alchemy/ to produce olive oil (?) before he caught on.

Upcasting them would probably be more broken For rangers have them still use a lv 1 spellslot and bonus action (literally just remove concentration and you use this to replace Favorite Enemy or Favorite Foe) For Warlocks have them be able to use it a number of time equal to their proficiency bonus per short rest (or long rest if that’s too strong)

@@jashloseher578 Magic-user was renamed "mage" in 2nd edition. The name was brought back as an alternate version of the wizard subclass in 4th edition. The term "mage" was also used in reference to arcane casters in general after the introduction of the sorcerer class, and is also applied to users of certain types of magic within the wizard class in 5e (see War Magic subclass - "Followers of this tradition are known as war mages"). Thief is a subclass of rogue in 5th edition, and was the name used for that class before 2nd edition. So both have been actual D&D classes and are still remain relevant terms in 5e. Jacob is incorrect with his assessment on this one. What really got me though is that he didn't include "warrior" in his comment about the thief and mage not being D&D classes. Both of those are actually D&D classes but there has never been a "warrior" class. Warrior was the name for a group of classes in 2e which included the fighter, ranger and paladin. The class groups are not actual classes, just a label for a grouping, similar to saying "arcane casters". There was also a "Noble Warrior" kit for the fighter in 2e. Kits were sort of like 5e backgrounds. And there was a "warrior" class in 3e that was like a dumbed down version of the fighter class intended for NPC use only, similar to the warrior sidekick option in 5e. But never any actual classes called "warrior", yet he called out the other two for not being D&D classes, even though they are/were.

@@brookejon3695 Guess which skill-based class is one of the only two to get that feature. Sure, it's not a requirement that it works this way, but rogue acrobatics is generally for tip-toeing across a floor covered with pressure plates, while bard acrobatics is generally the gymnastics on display. If you want to make a rogue who's a circus performer, there will be the question why they aren't just a bard instead

Funny thing about pirates and eye-patches. They were not used to cover "missing" eyes, but rather to retain vision while transitioning from the dark of the ship's hold to the glaring sun light on the deck and vice-versa.

I love playing my characters with more "normal" backstories. The current character I'm getting ready to introduce is a wizard who has left fancy magic school because she wants to actually shoot the fire balls at people, and adventuring is the most legal way to do so.

If the opponent with an eye patch was a pirate, I don’t think that would succeed in temporarily blinding him. Most pirates wore eye patches not because they had a missing eye, but so that when they go below deck they can have an eye already adjusted to the darkness

True. But also the pirate's patched eye would be used to darkness and not light so when it is suddenly exposed to light he wouldn't be able to see out of it properly while it adjusts. It may even cause him great distress or pain if it is very bright.

To be fair that's just athlete, acrobatic and performance. Which is far from jack of all trades. Also, jack of all trades isn't really noticeable until you have +4 skilled which gives +2 on all because let's be honest, does your DM ever count that +1 as important difference?
