A taser could trigger something that has a knockback effect. Their priority is to minimize something happening to them and then obviously avoid killing him if they don't have to. Their priority is not to avoid him going deaf. Him going deaf is nothing compared to what might happen to them if it turned out there was some sort of trap that could be triggered by something that isn't just thrown.
