OMG!! I need to move to Australia. I never understood why there are so many regulations here. Yea, I started racing in 97’ I bought a brand new Cr500 and was hand in glove with that bike. I bought a pristine 98 500 in 2010. It set a record in Michigan by doing 104 mph in 400.’ It smelled like alcohol in the tank when I picked it up. I had a 96 rolling chassis I had planned to make street legal but backed out. My buddy gave it to me and built one of the first 500 conversions in the country. He raced 500s in the 80s against Ward and Johnson. He had a Honda sponsor. They used to call me the 500 guy because I was the only one on one in 97 and the only one in 2010. I smoked 3 450s in a row going down an 800’ straight in a Mx race in 2011. That solved that debate..!!😁😁😁

Would be nice, wouldn't it? I believe Honda actually sold a quad bike with this motor that had electric start, but unfortunately also had a centre chain so can't be used in a bike. There is a waiting list for a KTM 690. The closest Honda has now in Australia is a CRF450L. I know which I'd prefer, but sadly I won't be holding my breath waiting for a reborn XR - I'm pretty sure pollution laws have killed them off for good...

Kalipornia requirements would fuck it up.

E start is always not for man...e start eat power at the engine and dont need anything

Cheers mate. Yes they do start easy - never more than two kicks for me! The secret is if they have been left for any time you need to drain the fuel out of the carby and replace it with fresh.

Good choice - that bike has taken me many places and never missed a beat!

Thanks for the comments and the info about the chain guards - I didn't know that! I like original too, and have gone to a lot of trouble to keep them that way. Even the supermoto, I have every genuine part to put that back to original. Graphics are weird in Australia, 2005 bikes have 2006 graphics, and they seem to have been imported in batches with lots of them the same month and few in between.

themokedog yes if you look on XR650r.uk my bike is the one that looks very similar to yours it changed or evolved. There pictures on Pinterest too

Thanks mate, I like them too! I've never seen any zero to 60 times - I guess it depends on where in the world you are, the gearing, and how they are tuned. From new in Australia they had 15/41 sprockets so probably slow off the mark but according to a magazine article from the time could do 188km/h or 116.8mph!!!

Simple answer - I am in Australia!! All XR650R's sold here were fully road legal complete with VIN, turn signals and horrible restrictive exhaust. The first two bikes are fully registered and ridden on the road regularly. I don't know for sure, but it seems the US is one of the few places the 650R's were off road only?!?

Cheers mate! Tail tidy is a genuine Honda part - 84701-MBN-650 - even tidier if you cut it off under the licence plate. It attaches to a steel mount that also takes the indicators and bolts to the aluminium subframe under the seat. I believe the headlight assembly is different to the XR650L, but the same as the XR600R we got in Australia for many years. If you are interested check out any Australian Honda website for part numbers ie www.hondashop.com.au/parts-service-repair/honda-parts-catalogue/

@@themokedog Oh I love them! Always have, but they are a rare species in Norway, so when I found this one with less than 300 miles on it I had make that deal. Yep, already on the parts. And I always run my own service when I get a new bike. So, new oil, filters, spark plug and valve check. Looking forward to see more of your XRs in the future 👍

Thanks! I have only used the cheap Chinese radiators. Hard to fault at the price, but hard to fit with the original tank - but it is possible. You need to keep the top as far forward as possible, and the bottom as far back as possible. Cap will be 90 degrees out, overflow outlet too big, and use silicone tube for the air bleed. I’d also recommend a fan if you spend any time in traffic or going slow

Fantastic!! Good luck with it. My two tips - gear it so you can cruise at highway speeds, and put on a BIG fuel tank! Very capable bike, but high speed for a long time they like a drink...

@@adamhideghety5612 I don't know that I can help you - it is a 650cc single cylinder and will vibrate. I find it bad at the 10-20 minute mark, but with good gloves and grips it goes away. If you are doing long highway speeds maybe this isn't the bike for you.....

Cheers mate! Believe it or not, the headlights are factory original. As far as I know there were three versions of the 650R - ED(European Direct), DK(General Export) and U(Australian). These are all the U version, and again as far as I know only sold in Australia. They came from the factory road legal, and had a VIN number and an Australian compliance plate riveted to the frame. Part of being road legal and complying with our laws was having a hi/lo beam headlight, and I think the ones you are familiar with were only single beam? So yeah, we got stuck with this giant headlight and giant indicators... but then we can also ride on the road!

It is the Australian “U” version, very similar to the ones sold in Europe with a few extras to make it legal here. We were a bit lucky I think, don’t know why they never sold them in the US....

I bought the best available, and still had to replace quite a few parts. But it's amazing what a bead blaster, some zinc plating and heavy duty scrubbing can do!

Yep, the Honda lineup in 2021 is very different to 2001 - certainly nothing to replace an XR650...

They are all Australian bikes. I think the speedo is the same one they used on all XRR's here for about 20 years!

Yes, water cooled. Completely different motor to the air cooled XR's.

You're right - I really should buy more! I have an 85 XR600 that I bought new, and wouldn't mind a mid 90's XR600 as well but very hard to find a good one these days. Even harder to find a good XL600 in Australia...

Most of the parts for these bikes came from Motosport.com or partzilla.com - but they won't have any of the specific road legal parts for bikes sold outside the US. I think you will find the correct part number for your front plate is 61140-MBN-840ZA I'm not sure where you are but they are still available from Honda dealers in Australia. I bought one about 2 years ago for $110 AUD
