2003 XR650R bought off Gumtree in late 2018. A very low kilometre bike that unfortunately hadn't been stored well and had a few problems. This was never meant to be a like new restoration - what I wanted was a bike that looked good in the garage but I would still be happy to get dirty on the weekend!

Beautiful build. I converted my U.S. XR650R to look like an Australian xr. Something about the Australian XR that looks so sick!

@themokedog
@themokedog 4 жыл бұрын
Cheers mate, thanks for watching. Bike cost me $6000AUD, I reckon I spent $1500 on genuine Honda plastics and other OEM parts (thank you motosport.com), and another $500 on aftermarket parts like hand guards, handlebars, indicators, mirrors, bolts etc. Most expensive part was the rims and hubs - about $2000 with the tires, discs and sprocket. It was expensive, but less than a new KTM690 and for me a better bike. I would say go for it while parts are still available!

Where did you get the speedometer and electrical goodies. I’m in the USA and our bikes were only off road. I really want mine as a duel purpose bike and quit frankly the Baja kit I installed sucks. The connectors are weak and the components have broken down in a short period of time.
@themokedog
@themokedog 3 жыл бұрын
Pretty much everything is standard Honda as it came from the factory, the only thing I did was change the indicators and tail light to led. Just as all the US bikes were off road, all the bikes sold in Australia came like mine and were ready to licence. Most parts are probably still available as spare parts, but it would be very expensive to convert a bike that way unless you could find someone wrecking one.

@themokedog do you have a parts build list? Doing something similar to mine. Great job, by the way.
@themokedog
@themokedog 3 жыл бұрын
Cheers mate! No, sorry. I wasn't in a hurry - spent around a year on it, pulled it apart and worked out what I needed, then rebuilt things as parts arrived. Plenty of online parts lists for genuine Honda parts, which were all still available at the time. Aftermarket is starting to get harder to find. Good luck with your project!

Nice build! But why did you go with DOT 5 brake fluid? What advantages do you see?
@themokedog
@themokedog 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I went with the silicone fluid mostly because it repels moisture rather than attracting it, and also it won't take paint off if it leaks. Plus I realise I am never going to replace the glycol based fluid every year like you are supposed to...
@RollerGuideX
@RollerGuideX 11 ай бұрын
Nicely done mate. I know it's been a few years since the build but was it terribly hard to source parts down under for this as the bike hasn't been imported for a long long time?
@themokedog
@themokedog 11 ай бұрын
Cheers mate! It was around 4 years ago now but no problem at all finding any part. Most of the common parts came from the US through Motosport.com because it was about half the price buying in OZ, even with postage. A few things weren't available complete, like the front wheel - but every part was available. All the Australia specific parts like number plate holder and switch gear was all available from my local Honda dealer. I wouldn't like to try doing a similar rebuild today - I reckon a lot of those bits would be unavailable now....

Hey what bike is the speedometer from, mine has a trailtech on it right now and I really want to get rid of it
@themokedog
@themokedog 3 жыл бұрын
Hi, it's the original speedo for this bike, used for the XR650R export market. Part No. 37200-MBN-651 Still available new but very pricey ($400). Should be plenty second hand though, I think they are the same as used on many XR's since the 90's that were sold outside the US as road legal.

Great job, I also fully rebuilt mine now I am only missing to redo the wiring properly. BTW where did you get the frame guards above the foot pegs? Been searching for those all over the world! Cheers from Denmark!
@themokedog
@themokedog 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks mate! The frame guards were on the bike when I bought it, and those particular ones haven’t been made for many years. But you can still get some that are made here in Australia - just search for B&B Offroad. I have some on my other XR650, with a little bit of bending and filing they work well.
@Michael420oi
@Michael420oi 3 жыл бұрын
@@themokedog in that new models offered by B&B you only have a frame guards with no coverage of rear brake cylinder :( or am I wrong? Checked your collection - a piece of art and must be a true zen building them up. I own a 2012 XRL, some of original parts are lost, but some day one day...
@themokedog

@@Michael420oi The B&B guards cover the whole rear master and more of the frame. In my other video kzfaq.info/get/bejne/l69jm8Kaza3anYE.html the supermoto has B&B guards on it. Good luck with your XRL - not many of them in Australia!

So genuine rear guard from honda? or UFO ? did the rear tail light come with it? whats been done to the engine? top end? cheers
@themokedog
@themokedog 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, genuine Honda guard. The tail light on the top is just a lens with no bulb underneath. The licence plate holder and stop/tail light at the rear are all genuine, but I have replaced the light with an LED copy of the original. The motor had only done 5000km so has not been touched apart from adjusting the valves and jetting the carb.

@@victoroneill4381 Do you mean motosport.com? They are in the US, but if you order over $400 worth of parts shipping is only $29. I find this way parts are around half the price of buying in Aus. @@JORELFIT It is just an hour meter, and only tells you how many hours the engine has been running so you know when to service it. Search "digital hour meter" on eBay. If you need a speedo then that's a whole lot harder! The only ones I know that work with the stock cable are the stock speedos - $400 new or look for used ones...
