Thanks so much for this video! I bought a 2003 Xterra at a great price recently, and it showed a bad knock sensor. I used the procedure you demonstrate here and it fixed the issue, enabling the truck to pass right through emissions testing. May not be the ideal place to mount the sensor, but at least it is still functional to some degree and it satisfies emissions requirements without having to tear down the entire top of the engine. I took mine a step further, cutting the original sensor wire further to the rear and soldering all wires into a new 2 conductor harness connector in case I ever get to replace the sensor in the stock position.

Yeah there are several ways to mount it but relocating it is so much better than tearing down the intake which i have done before. Glad the video helped and thanks for watching !

They sell kits on ebay. New knock sensor and plug in for about $15. I would use butt connector crimps and heat shrink. You are asking for trouble with wire nuts. Also if you have the wire the side of the block or head is a much better location. It picks up valve rattle vibrations.

Nice video. I thought about the original part location and read some of the comments about the harmonics being further away and I came to this conclusion. That location is only good for piston misfire. The vehicle is ohc so camshaft noise is a no. It's closer to the rear of the engine so the front cylinders would be difficult to pick up misfires. Crap engineering at its finest. They could have placed at least 2 sensors above the plenum. With metal that contacts with the same place as the original part. I did do this because I took the upper plenum off for valve cover gaskets and at the time the sensor was 100 bucks. No way... I would say if you want factory location, go full bore. Valve cover gaskets, knock sensor, fuel injectors and if you can replace the exhaust manifolds, I guarantee one or both have cracks. If you are doing 500 dollar labor, get the most bang for your buck.

Wire nuts and tape is just asking for trouble later down the road. There's a lot of heat under that hood. Even crimping is not ideal since it relies on a pressure-fit connection. Solder it, use heat-shrink, and don't ever worry about it again.

The engines computer is looking for a Biased 5V Ref back to it -- on the 3.3 that is about 2.5 volts That is why a functioning knock sensor works, regardless of location IF-- it needed as Erik Cruz says -- to set parameters to adjust timing etc -- then it would have to stay on top of the engine block In most cases this theory is beyond almost all professionals & is learned by accident or lots of experimenting or research,as manufactures engineers do not release the info. If dropping a couple grand or doing your all your own work & taking 7 days over two weeks to do so,then go for it & install the sensor in the stock location. Then your covered when your neglected preventative maintenance kicks in & you need to detect a knock. If your going to drive any vehicle with any problem, even 10 miles or one day,you need to educate yourself.
