I used to do commercial roofing, and xylene is used as a branded product for several roofing suppliers as a cleaning agent for hot air welding TPO or PVC. I was unaware of this and had a rag with xylene that i had put in my back pocket and forgot while working, cleaning for welding application. Also in my pocket with that xylene soaked rag was my phone charger. My butt kept feeling like it was burning and i went to pull the rag out of my pocket and it had literally melted the phone charger to the rag to the fabric in my back pocket. I also had a rash for like 2 days. This is some gnarly stuff

use this at my job. use it to clean paint guns and removing tape from sand blasted jobs.. does this to styrofoam, not much to skin.

I truly hope you didn't attempt this. In nearly all states, xylene is considered a hazardous chemical which requires specific disposal. I work in chemistry and it kinda pisses me off that manufacturers don't give instructions on that.
@demoniack81

@@AdamStJamesStJames Besides I highly doubt that xylene will dissolve the HDPE or PP that cap is made of unless you heat it up to its boiling point. I do agree that the fact all these solvents are sold to be used in applications where they just evaporate off into the air is appalling. Xylene is the primary ingredient of lots of paint thinners, and if it's not xylene it's toluene or some other aromatic compound anyway. Probably millions of tons of this stuff gets evaporated off of paint every year, and I doubt atmospheric oxygen is enough to destroy it before it comes back down with rain.

@@demoniack81 it is troubling to consider the potential ramifications if you ARE indeed right about it not interacting with atmospheric ozygen... hadn't considered that possibility

Right! When I was in High School's hostel, one of my senior mixed gasoline and styrofoam and he used the end result to seal cracked plastic mugs. From that moment,I knew how useful a mixture of gasoline and styrofoam is.

+117khan I did use it to break down Styrofoam, to reduce it's size, but there is the question of Hazardous waste. I am not a chemist at this point, so I am uncertain of the resulting compound of Xylene and Polystyrene. I am very happy to have you as a loyal viewer, let me know if you have any requests :)

That is a good point, what are the products of this reaction? I'll see if I could possibly do this as a research project at my univ, it'd be pretty interesting to have this as a possible waste solution (though as you mentioned, they probably didn't use this method due to hazardous waste). And I'm glad to be a loyal viewer, this channel is awesome!

This isn't eliminating anything, the styrofoam is still there and as a bonus now it's dissolved in a heavily toxic and carcinogenic solvent that you now need to deal with. The original styrofoam was at least biologically inert.

@@HeilmanHackatronics There is no chemical reaction between polystyrene and xylene, its similar to dissolving sugar in water and letting it dry again.
@romansthirteen-four8626

When the xylene evaporates, the same amount of plastic will be left behind - should even weigh the same. It will be as harmless as regular styrofoam, unless it has a sharp edge that could cut you.

DeeInTheHouse Not all chemicals desolve all plastics. (: There's actually a chart you can look up on the internet that specifies which chemical can be stored in which type of container material :) (for instance, hydrochloric acid can be safely stored in HDPE (high density polyethylene), while it can - sloooowly - eat up some metals (like iron) or metal alloys (like steel; a mixture of different metals, basically) Just be sure that the cap is made of the same stuff, and doesn't leak (some containers or bottles have a litlle white disk in the lid - not sure what that's made of. Haven't found the time to test yet ;))
