This is me (Tim McMaster) and my Y-Block Ford powered front engine gas dragster Elwood. It's our first time running the 1320 at Famoso Raceway just north of Bakersfield, CA in Oct. 2010. We did fairly well for our first time out, the car ran great and had very few problems. All this on my spare pickup engine.

Been 'loving' the Y-Block since 1969 when I purchased the family car! That car was a '56 Country Sedan with a 292 my father bought in 1957. Later purchased a '57 Fairlane with a 312 and a '57 F-100 with a 272. Fits time I can remember seeing a Y-Block in a dragster in America. Seen a few vids and photos of them from 'down unda'! Nice going Tim McMaster!

I've always loved the sound of the old Y-blocks. Dad had a '55 Ranch Wagon with the 272 and (I believe factory) glass-pack mufflers. Really nice rumble without being too loud. He sold that one and a couple years later, picked up a '54 Mainline 4-door with the 239 and 3-speed - a beater run-around car. It was a good deal quieter, but still had that Y-block rumble. Oh yeah, and nothing quite like the solid-lifter click...

You would be suprised to know that there were more ECZ-G heads on 272 pickup truck engines than anything else, they did come on T-birds but to call them "T-bird heads" is kind of missleading. Might as well call them "pickup heads". As for the super charger heads (EDB-D or 471 casting) they are one of the best flowing Y-Block heads but as you said with 82cc chambers they were a bit low on compression. Milling them is not the best way to get the comp. up a dome piston is. .060" is max to remove

@@mctim64 I'm trying to remember whether I had 94's or 97's on my '57 Ford. The main problems I had were finding jets and, if I remember correctly, they required a special tool to change jets. I'm in my 70's now and memory not so hot, so please pardon. The carbs had been mistreated before I got them, too, so a fella has to take that into consideration. Looks like you have them running fine. I guess Summit markets reproduction ones now. My hotrod days are over I guess with this injection on everything and I'm just too old to learn the whole thing. My favorite carbs were Carter AFB's and with a selection of needles, jets, micrometer, step-up springs, and a few beers I could make them run strong and get mileage, too. I could tune Holley's, too but never liked the damn gaskets and the way the power valves worked. Best carbs I ever played with were side-draft DCOE Webers on a cross-ram manifold on a SBC. The whole jet stack could be pulled all together and played with at will. They say Del Ortos are nice, too, but I've never gotten to play with them. With injection now I just put in a programmed power chip and don't mess with them after that. Compared to carbs, not as fun. Kinda like kissing your sister.....gives you something to do but not very exciting. Hang in there. P.S. Nice lookin' 58' Ford pickup you've got movin' you around......I think it's a '58 anyway.

These heads were 57 T-bird, 312, but I guess they may have been avalable over the counter, I really don;t know, the 57 super charger heads were also good but to use them with carbs is a lot of trouble, they need to be shaved to boost compression but to get it right they need to be done on a certain angle, so this makes them expensive,You may already know this but reving a 312 can be a problem as to get the Y block to this size meant maching the crank this of course made it weaker especially at.

Why do dragsters never run with a radiator? Why do they not get too hot and seize.
@gregorytimmons4777
@gregorytimmons4777 5 жыл бұрын
ralph sampson Some iron blocks use an epoxy type block filler in water passages. It's called Rock Block and it fills up the passages and hardens making the block more ridged, stronger and less likely to distort or crack. On some of these cars coolant is in the head cooling passages only. Others may run no coolant. The engines don't run long enough (usually) to be harmed and alcohol burners don't heat up as fast anyway.
@mikemc7704
@mikemc7704 5 жыл бұрын
They do run with radiators they have them laying flat on the chassis so the air under the car pushes up into it.
@gregorytimmons4777
@gregorytimmons4777 5 жыл бұрын
Michael McCormick Certain classes do have dragsters running radiators. Super Comp, Super Pro does I believe but other classes such as Altered or Comp Eliminator, Top Dragster, Top Sportsman, Top Alcohol or Top Fuel do not. The ones with radiators drive down the return road to the pits. Those without radiators are towed back by their "chase vehicle."

@@gregorytimmons4777 i am well aware of that i did not say they didn't run a radiator i said most radiators are run Flat with a slight tilt mounted under the car or over the trans. I had a front engine super comp dragster and a rear engine Top Dragster now i am building a nostalgia funny car.

Michael McCormick Ok. So I stand by my comment. I'm aware of what you said. My point was that not all do. Obviously that's why some are towed back down the return road and some are driven. Just trying to answer the guys question.

Those were the days when Ford stood by the long-stroke design while Chevy was notoriously quick with their short-strokes. Chevy won every drag, but Ford dominated 500 mile high end races. Except for Chryslers. The dominated everything.
