Very realistic analysis, everything he gave was valuable. Of course, allowing foreign banks to enter the country won't be the best decision for many reasons. As he said, they never come here to give us dollars. However, when we look at how the local banks operate, I think the government won't have any options unless the banks start coming up with multiple products. It is unfortunate to see almost all banks in Ethiopia couldn't come up with some creative ideas to facilitate the macroeconomic performance of the nation. Instead, they focused on profiting from interest. I think this issue should have been debated before letting the foreign Banks be involved in the national economy. Once the foreign banks enter, we are no longer able to control the overall economy of the country, which means the local millionaire eventually end up losing their equity, so it needs careful implementation to protect the national equity in the long term.

If foreign banks enter, most small local banks are likely to crash.However, I am not convinced that if any retail bank would be interested to enter. Probably investment banks may show interest to loan for bigger companies.

Didn't Kenya go through banking crisis few decades ago when it first liberalized the sector? Not sure what the role of foreign banks was at the time. It seems the Ethiopian system has avoided crisis for long. Is it because better regulated? Do foreign banks stabilize or destabilize? I don't know, but good to have a discussion.

Also, the technology transfer should be taken into account. It is easy to compare the operational efficiency of Kenyan banks with that of Ethiopia and judge whether to involve or not foreign banks.

Poor Analysis. He has no clue about electrification of Cars. First of all it is not all about environment, though it is important issue. Electric cars save foreign currency to the country. 1) by reducing the import of diesel or ⛽️ Gasoline. 2) electric cars have very few moving part and there fore less import on spareparts. 3) environmentaly have positive impact on the country... less pollution the better we can breath. Please note most car producing countries will cease to produce any Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) cars in 15 to 20 years. Ethiopian financial center is not strong enough or sophisticated enough to compete with foreign banks that can easily manipulate and destabilize internal markets. You’re not allowed to subsidize the internal market Ethiopian government already been accused for subsidy unless to totally fall in the hands of international foreign banks . Their interest is mind you not to help you develop your business they come to maximize their lenders investment it’s not for charity but to maximize profit. My comments Starting from Electric Vehicles: Nanga 550 a five seat electric vehicle (EV) imported by an Ethiopian company Green Tech Africa, travels over 400 km at a speed of 60 km/hr with a full charge that costs about 25 bir in electric bill. To travel 400 km distance with a petrol car that makes 10 km/liter fuel cost is over 1950 bir. EVs can be charged from a single phase outlet at home, need no motor oil, have very low maintenance requirement, a lot cheaper and easier to repair and of course environmental friendly. Forget the environment and imagine the saving! Encouraging EVs is an excellent move on the part of the government. I was hoping a similar opinion from Ato Kibur. Regarding banks, reports are deceiving. The National Bank of Ethiopia speaks highly of Ethiopian banks. A reality check, however, indicates they are full of corruption, full of red tape, nepotism and favoritism. Agriculture is the backbone of the economy and check statistics: what percentage of the loan goes to SME farmers? What percentage of the loan goes to SMEs? Ato Kibur as an insider to the Ethiopian business community should know how difficult Ethiopian banks are specially to SMEs. The banks exploit our nationalist sentiment but we love our country does not mean we want to be stuck with inefficient and corrupt local banks. Governments have been irrationally babysitting Ethiopian banks nicknamed by some as ህጋዊ አራጣ አበዳሪ at the cost of the business community and now. Opening the banking sector will force them to wake up and straighten out. African banking system, many banks are foreign, but serve the business community a lot better than our local banks do Ethiopians. It is good the sector is open.
