As an old Grunt type, my 'most impressed' point with the new BSG series was the following. They were on some planet, and about to raid a Cylon city/depot/facility. Before they headed out, the 'Chief' (who apparently was some sort of grunt, as well as being a mechanic) briefed the mission on an honest to god sand table. Yes, they briefed the mission on a sand table. I do not think I have ever seen a sand table, properly used, in any other 'military' tv show or movie. That was impressive.

This thing is like the ugly duckling that you have to love. It an enduring little craft that has been the centerpiece for many great moments in the series. Fun fact, if you look at the BSG Pegasus, one of the newest Battlestars in the new BSG universe before the Cylons decided to go Skynet on everyone for the second time, has several launch tubes on each wing pod shaped specifically to launch Raptors! Cool little feature that the designers added but was never use in the show.

The difference between the Viper marks in the show is like the difference between the F4 Phantom and the F15, you can see the lineage, but you can also see a huge difference in design style. The reason why we haven't done this "Jack of all trade" vessel type, I would guess, is because you usually get more milage out of your military spending budget by buying specialised assets and have them work together in combined arms warfare. The "combined" and "work together" usually is where the teething troubles show. But that isn't something the money we saved can't fix! Right? As a side note, I recently came across this most fascinating debris field. Don't mind the owners of whatever is parked bay 24, 47, 285, 333, 345 and 402. They are more then likely not gonna arrive within 24 hours. However, I have a signed dataslate that says I can have what was parked there. Free of charge!

the other reason is because we HAVE done jack of all trades before, often as products of feature creep, and usually they do one or two things ok ish, but are dismal at the rest. The Raptor is a bit different, as it takes the "platform" approach, AKA you take a vehicle that is already pretty good on its own and add shit to it based on mission requirements
@mackenziebeeney3764
@mackenziebeeney3764 2 жыл бұрын
That said the raptor is perfect for a war time mass produced unit for a force that may or may not be able to be resupplied with new units or parts. I can easily imagine that the raptors modularity was originally its market value, for a flexible but niche operations profile, but as the supply problems of war became apparent, it was easier to mass produce a ton of raptors and weapons systems separately and make everything compatible with the raptor so even if half the arms shipments are intercepted, you still have enough combined parts to have a whole raptor wing. Might not be the missile gunboat setup you wanted, but you’ll still have them, which is the important part in that equation.

The Raptor also apparently served as a mini-AWACS, at least according to the pilot miniseries: Boomer and Helo were out with _Galactica's_ original Viper complement to act as sensor support and fighter direction. I don't know exactly how they were supposed to control two dozen or so fighters with just two crew aboard, one of whom was a pilot, but that seemed to be what they were trying to do.

As I understand things the Raptor was supposed to be a variable payload vessel where you installed the module to suit the role. AWACS/EW? Slap that module in. Gunboat? Rip out that one, add a payload bay. Transport? Take the expensive gubbins out and put on a box for squishies. It's still *far* too small for everything they said it could do but it at least makes a little more sense. I believe a similar idea was originally put forward for the Osprey but that got ditched. Shame really as being able to swap out a mission module would be a sweet option.

And if you play BSG Deadlock, you love them for even more reasons. Assault Raptors (missile pod variant) has an in-game "paint target" ability that drastically increases the hit probability for Colonial ships when firing on that target. With Battlestar Artillery, long range gunnery against fast targets (in game) is frustrating given the relatively low hit probability. But with raptors lasing your target? Battlestar artillery is terrifying even at medium-long range against fast movers, and can even hit fighters at medium range. Meanwhile, the more standard raptor can land marines to assault enemy ships or reinforce another ship's marines. They can disarm mines, boost the cyber warfare defense of friendly ships, and even carry four powerful unguided rockets. Of course, their enhanced DRaDis range coupled with quick speed (compared to escort and capital ships) allows for rapid target identification of enemy assets. In game terms, this identification of the target allows for positive missile locks and increases gunnery accuracy. Raptors are super useful and I keep a couple squads of each types in my fleets whenever possible.

The 1st War Raptor variants are easily my favorite, in particular the default variant. It’s real chonky in comparison to 2nd war raptors, and DO look like they can hold 13 people, if only barely. Plus, that toaster slayer gun, while it does have its primary firing arc defaulted aft, that doesn’t really matter in space, and it really super doesn’t matter when you can turn the engines around to fly backwards, because the 1st war Raptor has vectored thrusters.
@noppornwongrassamee8941

I always had the impression that the Raptor in the show was actually performing more roles than it was intended to have. Because after the Fall of the Colonies, the Raptors were what the Galactica had, and bigger better ships like actual troop transports and personnel shuttles had been blown up or left behind in the Colonies. In terms of design, the Raptor is probably closer to a Bell Huey or a Blackhawk helicopter outfitted with EW gear than a jet fighter. Because when you have BSG style antigravity tech, there is NO FUNCTIONAL DIFFERENCE between a plane and a helicopter. Hence why the Raptor can do things like transport people and mount weapons even if that wasn't its primary job. So IMO, aside from not being able to use the Viper launch tubes, the Raptor is a damn good design. And given the Raptor's frontal profile, it looks like the designers TRIED to make it fit the launch tubes before giving up because the Raptors had to carry so much stuff.

We don't do anything amazing like that anymore because we're not in a wartime condition where we have to scrounge and improvise to make things that shouldn't work but do, like in WWII, when the US Marine Corps decided it was a good idea to put the 75mm cannon from a Sherman tank in the nose of a B-25 Mitchell, along with adding an extra 4 Browning M2's above the cannon. The Marines really put the "gun" in gunship. For something more similar to the Raptor, we have Hueys in Vietnam, which could be equipped with up to 4 miniguns along with rocket tubes.

Indeed. Necessity is the mother of invention. What do we need. Where do we need it. What do we have now that can carry the 2 items above. Take out wrench, saw, duct tape and WD40 and start lashing things together. By contrast the army has been trying to retire the A10 for decades. Not replace, retire. But it’s proven itself an operational requirement every time a war happens. Local, low flying and armed to the teeth.

This is a different situation. The Spirit of Fire was totally cut off from everything friendy facing an overwhelming overmight of physically way superior aliens*. And they just had the stuff they allready had. So they had to get creative and make dropships into gunboats. The BSG had this abominations on board from the beginning, because some genious thought, "hey a craft, that can do everything but nothing decently is exactly what we need. Yay!" *Even if the grunts are treated like a running gag, we shouldn't forget, that John-117 in his Mijolnir basically is a demi god, capable of running at highway speeds, play ODST but without drop pod and dodge super sonic ATGMs and stuff and that in fact, even the grunts are physically superior to the ordinary marine. Raven 1 by Kevin Miller has a scene that explains the Growler (aside from the logistics logic of it), the Prowler is slow, subsonic, vulnerable. Someone either has to stay behind to protect it, it has to leave early, or you have to leave it with its pants down after a strike. It was good when the strike aircraft is assisted were also based off the same airframe. But when the self-escorting strike aircraft became faster, it became obsolete.

Trying to make a small workhorse ship can be more difficult than a big do-everything ship - with a ship that doesn't have a size restriction you can just add more stuff to it. _[It's like a sculpture, it's what you take away that makes it art.]_ That's what makes the Raptor so successful. They took a good rugged versatile frame, and bolted on what was needed for _that_ mission profile. In a way it's not so much a Type 4 shuttle, as more of a Roundabout or a Moonbase Alpha Eagle Transporter.

Raptor! Hell yeah! Aw man I love those dumb little kites! Winged Potato is the best description of them I've ever heard! For real though, in what I do related to Sci-fi, Raptors and just BSG TRS has made me consider so many more things like EW and Damage Control, even down to like, crew comfort on ships, I want a plushie Raptor so bad. Also bit of a note, the Mercury-class Battlestars actually had dedicated catapults and landing docks for Raptors along the sides of the flight pods! Also I think I'd personally call the Raptor a sort of uh, Specialist Utility Transport, but that's thinking of it like it's a Huey or something :T Very happy video :D

Wait, if I recall correctly the Osprey really did have a gatling gun that can be mounted under it, it's "only" a 50 cal but you know it's there I guess. So it's still only kind of a cross between a prowler and an osprey.

AAAHh! now that threat of cubing ships has mass to it and im loving the intro for it now on with the show post vid: *sounds of just dying of laughter from the end rant* ok ya no this channel for now just CANT ever get old because ya can find some of the most intresting but logical shit to just lose the rock off to XD good job SCS. oh and i hope the yards got space for a flotilla fleet im needing repairs on mostly my hanger bays and my fighter factory plants (dont question to much being from the avorion galaxy things can get strange) and i dont got were ever ya areas galactic standard yet but im hoping you can take some bulk shipments of specialized but vary multi use metals? (from making really good batteries that feed entire subsystems for months to armor that can eat both strain of space traval to heavy repeted battles)

I just thought of something that is never brought up. When Lost in Space, Gilligan's Isle and many many others switched to filming in color, ALL the scripts had to be re-shot. 4 seasons in, and re-rack, re Act every episode to date. I wonder if the Screen Actors' Guild signed off on it? Awesome intro btw, and yes I watched it twice to spare myself some wrath. And because it's cool and funny.

That was a pretty nice intro to be honest, sums up the channel in a nutshell. I suppose if you had to label the Raptor as something it would a "utility" craft since its multipurpose.

There was once a proposed design called the Common Support Aircraft. It was suppose to replace the S-3, E-2, KA-6B, and EA-6B. It was not built. Mid range ASW has been abandoned, E-2Ds came online, buddy tanking replaced a dedicated refueling aircraft, and EA-18s replaced the EA-6Bs.

One thing that the BSG reboot did so well was choosing a setting that gave the writers the benefit of the doubt in most situations. With the Raptor for example, I like to think of it like a Ute. It's not the best solution to every problem, there are better things, but if it's all you have you'll make it work. Because Galactica was an outdated, underequipped, and isolated vessel, it made sense that it might not be doing things "correctly", because they just did what they could. Think I'll have to re-watch BSG again. It's been nearly 10 years since I last saw it, and it really is one of the best sci-fi shows that actually got an ending.

The Growspreyler. That’ll cover it. And then, perhaps, “Puff the Confusing Growspreyler.” I think you hit upon some of the genius of “2001: A Space Odyssey”. The Discovery is a functionally realized ship with a logic to its design and layout. And, as far as I know, the first time that was done in popular culture Sci-Fi.
