First of all, the £1560 you mentioned for BNO visa is for the Healthcare surcharge, which you will also need to pay if you’re applying for spouse visa. For application fee, it’s £1033 for spouse visa and £180 for BNO visa if you’re applying for 30 months. Second of all, there are loads of requirements to meet and documents to submit if you want to apply for spouse visa, e.g. proof of income (for certain amount for at least 6 months), English test (not that I’m afraid I would fail, but it takes time and money to get it done), proof of relationship (so that they know this is not a fake marriage) etc. Third of all, you have no option to apply for a 5-year visa for spouse visa. You must renew your visa before your 30th month is up, which you will need to pay for another £1033 and to submit all related documents to prove your relationship in the past 2.5 years, as well as meeting the income requirement again. Spouse visa is a very complicated visa to apply for, which in some complex cases you might need to hire a consultant to do it for you. Also, there are a lot of cases of spouse visa rejection from the Home Office just because people didn’t submit correct or sufficient information, and you won’t get your application fee refunded… So using the spouse visa route to get your citizenship is a tremendously tiring thing to do I would say. We all need to be grateful that the UK government is allowing us to come to this country in such an easy way. BNO visa is a rather simple and affordable route for settlement compared to all the other current visa settlement options. I’m one of the lucky ones and for that I’m forever grateful for the people that made this possible.💛

So it IS possible for a married woman (my wife) to apply for a BNO visa independently of my status ? Somebody was saying that it’s not possible if you are married and must apply as a whole family unit ? Obviously if you WERE able to get a BNO visa then that’s untrue. I actually enquired about the spousal visa BEFORE the BNO visa was introduced so had nothing to compare it to at the time. It seems BNO visa is the easier option and takes the same length of time anyway (5+1)… thanks for your detailed reply.

That's correct. She can apply for a BNO visa on her own. When people say that you must apply as a whole family unit, they actually mean for families that got only BNO status, not British citizenship. Obviously if you're looking into spouse visa I would assume you have British citizenship. When she applies for her BNO visa, she will be treated as an individual, not an applicant from a family unit, i.e. regardless of who she is married to, she will be eligible to apply for a BNO visa.
