Extracts from a documentary made in 1961 about the Welsh colony founded in the Chubut province of Argentina in 1865. The original Welsh settlers were looking for a "New Wales" where they could live free from the influences and domination of English. They were offered land in the still unconquered and unexplored area of the Chubut valley in Patagonia. After initial hardships they began to prosper and opened further settlements inland away from Porth Madryn right up to Cwm Hyfryd in the foothills of the Andes. Bonds have been strengthened in recent years between Wales and Y Wladfa with support from the Welsh Assembly Government. There is now a Welsh school and frequent visits between the 2 countries to compete in Eisteddfods and other cultural exchanges. On a recent visit to Argentina, the Welsh rugby team played one of their test matches in the "old colony" to highlight and strengthen this link. There are also links between the Welsh of Patagonia and the Welsh communities in the USA, Canada and Australia.
A lot has changed in the 50 years since this was made and this may be of particular interest to the peoples of the townships of Trelew, Gaiman etc. Especially the families of the people who were featured in the documentary.

I have never been to Patagonia, but my late Mother 9Alwina Mair Jones) did in the celebrations last century. She was the daughter of Rev. Richard John Jones, one of the pioneers. My grandmother (Martha Jones) now long departed used to tell me of the things they used to do and I remember decribing shopping trips which took days if not weeks on horseback. I have some memorobilia of my Mothers trip including a medal which was presented to her. She was greeted she recounted by a vast amount of descendants. Sadly my Welsh is very limited as I was raised in England, but I am Welsh at heart. I shall never go to Argentina now due to ill-health and I shall always regret not going on the trip with her.

Hey Stifyn, I know some people who have just returned from 'Y Wladfa'. A fantastic experience I was told. I am determined to visit there one day. Incidentally, they have set up a school in Gaiman.....there's another in Trelew and I was told about a school in some other place which was Spanish speaking but provided Welsh lessons. Truly fascinating. I believe there are 3 teachers from Wales there at the moment teaching Welsh.

NO, I came across it whilst going through my VHS tapes. An ongoing project of transferring VHS to DVD. There are more recent docs on Y Wladfa which are more optimistic about the survival of the language in Patagonia. Glad you and your Dad enjoyed

I would like to visit there also but dont see me making it regretably. A friend of mine lived there and married a Patagonian. The Welsh Assembly (Senedd) provided funding for teachers to go out to boost the flagging number of speakers. It is good to see a revival and the continuation of the Eiteddfod out there.

You had me worried for a moment then so just checked your video again and it is Gwahoddiad. The 2 choirs just sing part of the chorus which is : Arglwydd, dyma fi ar dy alwad di, canna fenaid yn y gwaed a gaed ar Galfari. They also sing part of one of the verses. S4C tried to revive some of the hymns with their rugby choir competitions in 2007 and 2008 . The choirs were exellent and provided some great pre-match singing. Shame S4C did not repeat "Codi Canu "this year.

I hope you make it and I hope you have better luck than the girl from Patagonia who was on the news the other night. She came over to stay in Wales and learn Welsh but was refused entry at Heathrow by Immigration officials.

I was in the Chubet Valley when I visited Argentina a few years ago. Talk about a barren place. Awful agricultural land with poor irrigation and the shock the settlers must have got when they arrived must have been heartbreaking to say the least.

The hymn is called "Llef". I could not actually remember the name of the hymn but I could remember the first 2 lines which are : O! Iesu mawr, rho d'anian bur I eiddil gwan mewn, anial dir. Thanks to the internet, by typing in the first line on Google I got the answer.

I believe it is a BBC Cymru production made between Jan and April 1962. Four other programmes were produced at the same time in Patagonia called Y Gymru Bell. I am not sure about the Director but it may have been Huw Wheldon. Yes, I do have the full documentary.

Dear Stifyn, first of all thank you for uploading part of this documentary. But I really would like to see the whole documentary. I see it is ten years now since you reacted here but I hope you are still with us. In the last years I have seen the part you uploaded at least ten times, and I still can´t get enough of it. Is there a possibility to upload the rest also? Kind regards.

@@hansvandenberg7658 . I did not upload the whole documentary due to the file size and the time it would have taken to upload it due to my slow broadband speed so I extracted what I thought were the best parts. It attracted interest from a Welshman living in Patagonia with whom I corresponded with for some time . He eventually travelled to Wales and visited the BBC Wales archives and obtained the full documentary and others made at that time. He had assistance and backing from the regional government in Chubut and a documentary and presentation of some sorts was made and televised in the province. Such a long time ago that I cannot remember all the details. There are other videos I believe on KZfaq with regards to the Welsh colony but I am sure you have already found them

KZfaq only allows you to upload 10 minutes. With hind sight I could have split the documentary into 3 parts and uploaded it that way. Perhaps the BBC will show it again in 6 years time on the 150th anniversary of the Welsh arriving in Patagonia.

You are correct of course ,especially if I had written the info in Welsh. As it was written in English then Eisteddfods is also correct. For people outside of Wales the word would have no meaning unless they were eisteddfodwyr at the International at Llangollen . Anyway mun, thanks for the post.

Croeso, You should have asked here first and your day would not have been wasted. I was just looking at your recent uploading of the St Davids Day Welsh medley of hymns and noticed in your Tags that you have credited one to Calon Lan but I did not hear it. The first hymn is Gwahoddiad and the second tune you are correct with Tyddi a Roddaist. Its a shame they dont seem to sing the old Welsh hymns much any more at the Rugby Internationals.

No, not a hoax. You are correct about Nova Scotia and Gaelic speakers although they do not know the exact numbers as Gaelic is not taken into account in the Canadian census. They believe between 1 and 2 thousand speak Gaelic there. It is a shame that the number of Gaelic speakers in Scotland continue to decline with now less than 60,000.

Incredible this material! I Live in Trelew, Chubut and makes time trying to create a file audiovisual of the province for the people can access at the same and at the same time in its history, to its identity. ¿There is any possibility of achieving copy of this documentary, know their provenance or a way to get it.? Thanks

Osian, Is Vincent Evans still alive? The presenter of the documentary may have been a bit negative about the future of the Welsh language in Patagonia, but taking it into context with the census in Wales of 1961 which showed the number of Welsh speakers had dropped to 23%, and also with the decline in the number of speakers in Patagonia, you cannot blame his pessimism. It was the same cenus that led Saunders Lewis to make his radio broadcast the following year "Tynged yr Iaith" in 1962.

@muffcrew . I think I still have the full 30 mins but the only software I have is Windows Movie Maker which is a nightmare to use as it keeps hanging. S4C have been running a 4 part series on Patagonia , Cof Patagonia ( Remember Patagonia) and the final episode is on at 14:25 tomorrow. I have looked on S4C Clic to see if you can watch the previous episodes but they are not listed strangley enough?? You can however watch a recent film called Patagonia starring Matthew Rhys & Duffy
