You’ve actually seen Basen before. Way back in episode 5 he was the dude who was sparring with Jinshi at the start of the episode.

Maomao doesn't want to sound condescending to her superiors, which is part of why she doesn't explain fully. The second part has to do with assumptions. She didn't come out and say "yo this dude tried to off his brother" because she didn't have it confirmed - but by planting that idea in their heads, they were able to fully investigate and confirm.

When maomao said welcome home Jinshi saw his married life with his wife and it was too much love and sweetness for him to handle it ( for me they're already married)

The line about Lakan wanting to “force himself” on the courtesan is kind of a bad translation. It can be used that way, but it’s more likely him just saying he wanted to bed her, like talking dirty rather than being an evil pos aha

It feels like there is a Moriarty-type crime consultant, who offers advice on how to commit crimes while hiding in the shadows

I think he's her dad they have the same eye color, she reacted a certain way when she heard his description. Looking at Maomao and how smart and cunning she is I can say that I would believe he's her dad, especially when he said he "lessened her value". To me it sounds like he got her pregnant.

The core question is why Gaoshun investigating this and why did he into the previous gourmet poisoning. This continues to hint at he and Jinshi hidden roles as well as some kind of hidden conspiracy that manifests itself with strange incidents. Not sure all of these relevant poison makeup, salt poisoning, attempts on Lishu life, Lishu being returned to ‘safety” in rear palace, honey hidden threat, coded messages to whom/why, destruction of storehouse, seaweed poisoning, Lakan high status genius strategist getting involved, … yeah they could just be isolated incidents and stories but what if ……. 😈😈😈😈

I think Lakan and that courtesan is mom and dad. How would you lower a courtesan’s price? Make her less desirable. What’s less desirable than a courtesan pregnant with another man’s child? Lakan also has Maomao’s eyes. Which is why I think it’s very intentional they only showed the bottom half of her mother’s face. I’m not sure what to make of his character though. Something led to the purchase falling through. There’s so many question including how she got pregnant and if it was consensual. I have so many theories, but since they could potentially be spoilers, I won’t indulge. But just keep this as food for thought.

honestly meeting lakan i kinda have mixed feelings on least first few watches but he is an interesting character i can understand why maomao is weary on this guy to say least. it deffinatly shows maos intelligence that is for sure i really cannot wait until the little confortation without getting into too much details, but lets just say theres always more than one way to take on a king of sorts

Lakan is such an idiot making himself sound do bad. He really isn't and his story with the courtesan is so tragic. The subs really dont help with that impression.
