Hi! Roshi is right -the flashback scene is with a totally different woman, from at least 50 years in the past (the scene starts indicating it is taking place during the Edo era). The point is that Daki, the demon, has been playing this particular role and following the same M.O. for centuries. The story the old woman told the madam about re: the sadistic prostitute (Oiran) is probably all about the same woman - i.e., Daki. The murder of the madam two days before Tanjiro and the others come to the district is referenced by the two little girls in Tanjiro's house in the previous episode.

8:31 Don't worry, so many reactors are thinking that Daki's female victim in the black/white scene is the same woman that was dropped from the sky and killed. There's a reason the scene is black/white ("old" Hollywood movies = b/w). Edo period (captioned at start of scene) is at least 50 years before the events of Demon Slayer. The scene establishes how long Daki's been taking victims while disguised as a courtesan. The madam that was dropped is present time (show). Reactors do deduce it's a flashback scene but it's mildly triggering that so many think it was days/weeks ago and not decades. Not y'all fault though. Edo is a clue Japanese 3rd graders would pick up on but westerners shouldn't be blamed for not knowing the names of eras.

The “he” is a translation choice. In Japanese, Daki doesn’t say anything that reveals that she knows Zenko’s gender. Things like this and the “Sun breathing” is going too far in translation.

The scene at the beginning of the episode was a flashback to one of Upper Six’s kills years and years before. It’s set in the Edo Period, at the latest about 60-70 years before the Taisho, when the show is set.

Nah y'all got it wrong, the only reason Zenitsu and Inosuke could figure out it was a demon because they have extraordinary senses they were born with, Zenitsu having hearing and Inosuke having sense of touch and instinct. The trio are nowhere near Hashira level, Hashira can detect demons not because of a sense they were born with but something they honed with training. An Upper Moon is at the level to where they can easily body a Hashira in a 1v1 so no, the series was not implying anything like you guys were thinking, Daki has every right to be cocky against Zenitsu, literally no diff.

It's not the same lady in the flashback. The series takes place in the Taisho Period. The black & white flashback was from the Edo Period (probably 50-100 years prior to start of series). Edo was the name of Tokyo before the Meji Restoration (prior to 1869).
