Yachting Monthly's Crash Test crew makes a hole in its boat, puts it in the water and tries various methods of preventing water flooding in. Is it possible to stop the boat from sinking?

It is nice to know that a hull can take that much of a beating before failing.

I love the idea of the board with the engine foam... never thought of that... I'm going to make one like that and have it stored in the locker just in case I need it... we sail a lot on the Great Lakes and there is a lot of debris floating around, including logs.. so I bet its only a matter of time that we will need something like this... Thanks a million for the great tip!

True about debri. I just walked the north break wall in Milwaukee on Lake Michigan. Saw several 4-7’ tree sections & a whole ~20’, 6” diameter tree that made it to the launch ramps in a protected marina. Imagine what’s still floating around outside the break wall.

Greatly helpful. Next time show the hole and where the action is.

My notion is not to nail a plywood plate to the interior hull, but to secure it with drywall screws. Essential that pilot holes be drilled first, since you cannot drive a screw into solid glass (much less a nail). But I found the plan to draw a plate over the hole using a line fed from the inside to be quite clever. I carry a selection of bolts, which when things calm down could secure padded plates inside and out. For all this a battery drill required. Aa highly useful series of realistic demonstrations by Yachting Monthly, in y opinion, to their usual standard.

I have heard that the sail-wrap method only works while the boat is stationary. Upon moving, it actually gathers up a greater volume of water and presses it through the hole, making the leak worsen. I am surprised at how effective it was on a stationary boat, though!

Fantastically informative video of an immensely stressful situation. You could see how even this controlled event affected him. Thank you for this series. Time for an ale. 🍻 Was the boat floating initially or just suspended in the sling? Should have kept the bulkhead intact to see how the water traveled through the boat. Also, please show & calculate the effectiveness of the bilge pumps. Were they even used?

@felipeherrerias Duct tape will only stick to dry surfaces unless you can wrap it around and around to make a seal, such as on a split pipe, on the wet hull it wouldn't stick.

Someone tell the cameraman to point the lens at the f...ing hole in the boat "We put it there..." means nothing when all we've seen is the guy's face! We've all read about these methods - why use a film so we CAN'T see how they work (or don't).

I can't imagine doing this in a seaway. First a high volume electric pump because any method is going to take time. Then a wedged cushion seems the best.

Thanks for doing this video. I hope I never need to use these solutions but if I need to I more prepared. Speaking of that could you make more video's of what to do when things go wrong. One example I recently learned is if the tide is going out and there is no wind and your main doesn't work drop the anchor.

@LibertaerUeberAlles Many wooden and fibreglass yachts have made it offshore, over oceans and around the world without crash bulkheads. Handy to have, but by no means essential.

The slings holding the boat were lowered so the boat was floating, and the hull was supporting herself, not the slings. The slings were left in position just in case she sank :0)

while it'd been nice to hear from the navy, the examples given are the ones you typically hear about on the docks. i found it interesting that it seemed, once again, that the cheapest, most versatile solution was bracing a type IV against it until you could figure out a longer term solution, such as fothering with a flat sheet of plasticized canvas.

The cushion is remarkably effective. Don't want to be on a long cruise with this guy. The cushion forms around the hole the board doesn't.

What kind of boat was that at the beginning - they kept hitting it with a sledge after cutting it with a grinder and the sledge hammer just kept bouncing off LOL
@doyouwanttogivemelekiss3097
@doyouwanttogivemelekiss3097 2 жыл бұрын
looks remarkably strong on video, however it is nothing compared to the forces present in an actual collision: the boat could be 5tons at 6kts=3 m/s. Given that the hammer probably only weighs 5kg, I expect that the collision forces with e.g. a reef are roughly 100-1000 times larger. So the hull will crumble like newspaper...

just another example of the RYA trying to teach us all how to do something in the harbour in ideal conditions same as life raft exercise . try it on a heaving deck when you are shit scared and attached by life lines then one of you gets tossed over board because you still have life lines attached to the deck and there is only two of you then you will loose the yacht and two crew. The RYA needs to get with it and seek advice form people that have been at sea in all conditions for real
@steveburton5825
@steveburton5825 5 жыл бұрын
First off, this wasn't the RYA, it was YachtingMonthly (a magazine)... second, they had to have a way to prevent it from sinking so taking it out in a Force 8. Why do you dipshits have to criticize everything. You spend your money on a test and make a video and we'll all poke holes in it.

These guys are liars, they said they made a hole in thee boat and it took 30 sec. If you check the clock on the video it takes a ,minute and a half and they stopped the video twice. It likely took them more than five minutes.
