In this video we unbox the Yaesu FT-4X(E) which is Yaesu's entry-level dual band FM handheld radio, followed by a power test.
It covers both VHF & UHF along with the commercial FM broadcast band.
With 5w of output power, and a small form factor - this could be a great addition to the portable operator's kit!
Thanks for watching,
73'
Mike.

Since passing my Foundation 4 years ago, I have messed about trying to find a handie that I really like. I have had baofeng, Retevis and Yaesu, and my go to radio is my trusty Yaesu VX-6. Following up close behind is the Baofeng GT3TP which I also use frequently. This little FT4 seems like a real steal for the money and has quality branding. Many Thanks

I've had one of these since they were first announced. A great little radio, very nice for a little walk, without having to worry if you drop it etc.

I have a 2019 one and the power is fine and as documented. Receives well too. Certainly isn't deaf. Great for the hills.

Great video Mike - shame Yaesu haven`t put dual watch on it, that`s where the Baofeng still gives a little more .. c`mon Yaesu !

Apparently from the manual it has dual receive. Edit... Yes I see the problem haha. I'd still take it over a Baofeng anyway haha

@@OnTheMicwithMike it's a great radio for the budget, but theres much better radios out there lol ..I'd rather have a second hand decent radio for similar money. Love the video though Mike .. cheers again for the content. 73

And the Baofeng has very little Front End. But 2 1/2 Watts is way off the rated 5W on the 2m Band. For the Yaesu.

Dear Mike. I also recently purchased the FT-4X and am quite happy with it. Only I don't have a battery indicator in the top right corner. For the time being, no one knows how to set this or whether it is a malfunction. Do you have an answer?
@OnTheMicwithMike

Hi Ron, That’s the first I’ve heard of a missing icon but one thing that may have happened is that it may have been switched off within the programming software and that’s only a guess. I don’t have the software myself to check, because I programmed mine from the keypad. There doesn’t seem to be any option to switch the indicator on or off in the settings menu at all. It might pay to download the programming software from Yaesu and check the settings page and see if there’s any option in there for it. Sorry I couldn’t be anymore help, 73’.

Thanks for the quick response Mike. On the one hand, I am happy to hear that it is not me or the settings of the Yaesu. Now repackaged and returns supplier. Greetings, Ron.

I must be honest, it’s a nice looking radio. Easy to program, but unfortunately it doesn’t seem to pick up too well. In fact I tested the radio alongside three other radios a few weeks back, using the same antenna on all three - the retevis rh701. The Yaesu was poor on reception to a much cheaper Baofeng model and Kenwood handy. I think underneath it’s nothing more than what you’d expect from a cheap Chinese handheld. Better filtering though but that’s all. 73’ :)

2 1/2 Watts is unacceptable for a 5 watt xcvr. On the 2m band. It would go back.

@@landobandon2428 pretty standard really, most cheaper Baofeng radios do the same. There are other Baofeng radios that do nearer 10w which I've tested a couple over the years that do close enough to it.

Indeed. I sent mine back a few days after doing this video. There really was no difference in performance than that of a much cheaper Baofeng radio. Wasn’t impressed at all with the Yaesu, considering the price hike on a cheaper Chinese handheld.
