Hi Peter, nice honest review. I have always been, pretty much a Yaesu customer for most of my ham radio career. After a break of many years, like many others, I came back into ham radio because of lockdown. I got out my FT747GX, and off I went. The realisation soon became apparent, that maybe something more modern was required. I bought a Yaesu FT991a and have to say I was delighted with it, and the FT747GX was then relegated to Hf standby. Just recently I got the Icom IC9700 for 2m/70cm/23cm, probably the first marque change in all of 35years. Sadly, the FT747GX lost its drive, and I replaced the driver transistors, only for them to fail again. So I needed to back up the Hf side of things, and am eagerly awaiting the arrival of my FT10DX this Monday. I have now experienced the major changes in ham gear from many, many years ago to the present date and have to say how amazing these modern transceivers are. The FTDX10 uses a hybrid SDR architecture, while the IC7300 uses a direct sampling SDR. The hybrid SDR delivers better performance in the presence of strong signals in the passband, because the narrow roofing filter attenuates those signals before they can overload the A/D converter. In the 7300, the A/D converter is wide open to the entire passband. I'm in CM97, which has an extremely high concentration of hams, so I have a lot of strong local signals. I'm also an old American ham, but as an engineer, I've been learning new tricks all my life. Maybe it's not for everyone, and I respect that, but the FTDX10 looks like it is the right radio for me. I'll be upgrading from a FT-450D.

Your point regarding a general high level of performance being a given and the features making the difference is very valid. I'm a photographer by trade (ex Amateur Radio Magazine) and the story is the same with the 3 big camera manufacturers.

What a nice guy Peter is, a knolagable & informative enthusiast, I'm new to radio communications, it's a hobby I've been thinking 💭 about getting into for many years,, problem been affordability, it's a fascinating & a fantastic pass time ,I love gadgets, got many of them, when I get my inheritance I will definitely be getting something like the YAESU FTdx10 or a YAESU FT DX 3000 as it is now being discontinued, hopefully the price will drop🙏, I know in order to start this fascinating hobby requires me to get a license & of course legally must pass a set of upto 3 exams, that's the challenge, but I'm confident at passing the 1st one, wish me luck🙏🇬🇧

If it had an RF out to connect to an SDR, then it'd be pretty perfect. As it is, the ability to reduce QRM/QRN is insanely good and the DSP is spectacular. I really wish ICOMs were half as capable. And I own ICOM.

Very nice was thinking of buying one for the shack i like the external display monitor and coulor screen water fall looks amazing and different coulor function ❤

One thing to do is make the external screen high res to fully use 1920x1080 for spectrum, waterfall, decoder etc. all at once. External monitor should also be independend from the small screen and freely configurable for maximum usability. I think, we will have to wait 3..5 years for that.

Tnx for a stellar review. I’ve compared this rig with the 300hz filter on Cw and it edges the k3. The 7300 doesn’t even compete with the 2. However the 73 has brilliant audio out. The dx10 is the Cw contesters dream rig for what it is. It’s just the menus that make the k3 a great rig even though it’s getting long in the tooth. The rxer on the 10 is just a joy. Since I listen more than talk, i left the flex and icom collecting dust. Hehe. 73 Peter and stay well

Nice look into the radio Peter. I might be on the lookout soon for a more permanent home base soon and use the 705 as a portable vhf/uhf setup. It certainly looks like a nice radio. I don't have any loyalty to any brand, but I used to use yaesu and kenwood back in the 80's and 90's and the 705 is my first icom. All the best and be well. 73s

Great video Peter, I do really like this Yaesu. I feel that owning a IC-705 may bring user interface familiarity to instead buying a IC-7300. But what I benefit from HAM radio as a hobby is buying different radios that offer other features. So I think the FT-DX10 suits me best for what I also want to do.

I had to pore through the manual to find out a few things, which will be high priority for some potential buyers, the RS232 port is for CAT control, the USB does two functions, CAT control and internal USB sound card. With a SCU-LAN10 a lot of functionality is available for remote operation via ethernet. Very handy for those of us who want to play digital modes while pretending to watch television with the Mrs.... Firmware updates and recordings/configurations use SD cards.

Probably one of your best videos! In my humble opinion, an interesting setup is to have ic-7300 with PTRX-7300 and FTdx-10 together :) . At the moment I have a 7300 and an ft891, and undecide between swap the 7300 by a 7610 or add ptrx-7300 and ftdx-10. Leaned more to have both radios :)

can the Yaesu FT DX 10 interface directly to a computer without a TNC for RTTY and digital?

I agree with your analogy, would I notice the technical differences between the DX10 and say the IC7300? I don’t think so, so I would go down the user route, how easy is it to tune, change band, filters etc. With the exception of Elecraft a Windows based PC is needed to upgrade them. In 2021 and with the resources available I would not expect this to be so. I have a FT3000 and it remains a fantastic piece of kit, but for a Mac OS based man it’s a lot of hassle to upgrade the rigs software to the extent I cannot upgrade everything on mine. Many rigs have a monitor connection point but again the software is Windows based. So I’m not seeing a compelling case to change unless it’s a night and day difference in performance. This was a fantastic review. I believe the Yaesu FTDX-10 has a three-year warranty vs the ICOM 7300 that has a one-year warranty. Could you comment on how the length of a radio warranty might enter into a purchase decision? How would customer service ratings on factory warranty repairs enter into the decision? I was wavering on a new purchase fro some time now. But with this year's Black Friday specials I just could not pass up on the FTdx10 shipped for $1,300. I purchased it from a smaller online vender saving extra including no state taxes($100 saving). I enjoyed the review, but the FTdx10 blew me away.

Could you please help me with something. I have been searching everywhere to see if the ftdx 10 has the VC tuner in it like ftdx 101D has. It is the VC-tuner that makes the 101D so fabulous and everybody wants it. They say the little brother 10 edition it’s also good at tuning in a station I cannot find any picture that shows the VC-tuner on the ftdx 10 Version. Do you know anything about this could you help me please

Please, can you tell me if it is normal that the outer ring of the clarifier is a little lossy compared to the main one ? I noticed it moves a bit if you try to pull towards you. Thanks in advance. Enzo

I recently bought the FTdx10 , I’ve been able to do a direct comparison with my IC7610, I’m afraid the dx10 receiver is superior to the Icom, the filtering and noise reduction is such that I could easily copy signals on the dx10 that I couldn’t on the 7610. I wish it had a transverter low level output and a second antenna socket for 6 and 4M but that’s about it.

Hi Peter, I have the FTDX10 I think its amazing transceiver, but after cutting my teeth on a KW200B 35 years ago. I am mainly into CW, and sota chasing. My question is, would It be worth me buying the 300 hz roofing filter. Is there any difference in using 500hz filter down to 50hz and the 300hz down to 50hz, chasing ghosts stations ? Interested in your thoughts or maybe a video would be great

First ten seconds: I have the 101EE in mothballs. Was there a significant difference between the 101E and 101EE?

Bit confused, the link goes to a DX101D , the ability to hook up to a monitor grabs me, being partially sighted. But as a newbie some of these vidoes are talking to 'experts' not learners like me :) But I still want a DX10 :)

Yaesu stated the FTDX10 is a single-receiver version of the FTDX101D. If that is the case, it should have the same Sherwood results. I’m intrigued!

If you can narrow the bandwidth to say 50Hz, why would you want the optional 300Hz roofing filter? No one seems to know for sure!

No ext. RX antenna port, no separate 6m antenna socket, no PIN diode T/R switching (yes in 21st century still used relay) just sewing machine sound on CW, annoying menu…no chance to join my setup!

It's more traditional looking, but who wants THAT? Small buttons, crowded display. Not made for old American hams. Is it an SDR like the 7300?

"Good radio" - puts it right in the middle of the pack for WS.

Not a fan of modular mic plugs as they have poor strain relief and require specialist tools to repair.

It might be a fantastic radio but most blokes like a radio to look like a radio... That means lots of buttons please..

No antenna tuner for 1,700 bucks they should put a tuner in it they can keep it I will pass I would buy a 2nd ft 891 before I buy that radio
