For those of you who are considering the RT Systems USB cable. You have to power the radio off. Then power the radio on while holding down the display button, to put it in clone mode. Then press send or receive.. and wait approximately 2-5 minutes to read and write to the radio via USB. SD card method takes approximately 10 seconds, and you don't have to do a power on hold button down process. I regret purchasing the $25 USB cable. It's painful as I'll get out to use. SD card is the only way to go in my opinion. So simple. So fast.

Brian Flores using the SD card takes more time, adds steps to the update process. When you take into consideration taking out the SD card, waiting for your computer to read it, then update the card, put it back to the radio, those steps take time. As oppose to opening the RT System software, make a change and the send it to the radio. You will also add a lot of water and tear to the SD card slot on your radio, not to mention the water and tear on your SD card.

@@N2LRB LOL. Ok. You are obviously experiencing way different results then I. Are you using the RT systems FTDI programming cable with your FT 3DR? Or a 3rd party?

Its usually better to use usb over sdcard in this case but at the same time it comes down to preference. I can say though that while its annoying having to wait for it to write or read (since its iterating over every channel and piece of data instead of getting only what was in use - maybe this will change in a future update), it does help to ensure one dont need to depend on something as an sd card for just programming it. I also do feel they couldve designed this without a need of a separate cable as well.

Do the following if this video does not work for you.... 1 use 32 GB MicroSD 2 use FT3D RT System Software 3. format 32 GB Micro SD with Yaesu FT3D 4. backup Yaesu FT3D 5 use RT System Software to save memories added to Micro SD FT3D/backup.dat file 6 read (FT3D/backup.dat) file from Micro SD 7 Done Yaesu FT3D is now loaded and ready to use Hope this helps others that had the same problems I did setting up / programming the FT3D

@@frankwc0o I am having the same issue. I tried 32 gigs and 4 gigs cards. A back up write and read works in radio, but it dont read from card after i do a write via RT Systems.

@@frankwc0o That is what happening. After writing via the Software the radio do not read the SD. If I perform a backup via radio it will read the card. But that wipes the settings from the software. What version of the software are you using? I am using 5.00.19 and the radio is 1.01, display version 7.02

Similar happened to me. But it was because I removed the zero ohm resistor from the back (mod pcap). This creates a new radio ID type, and is why the old file will not work (read on radio or RT Systems). Supposed to write backup.dat file to SD card from FT-3DR, go to RT Systems programmer, and import from SD card to update software with new radio ID. But was getting can't read file error. I sent the backup.dat to Rod at RT Systems support, and they fixed the software to work with the new mod pcap radio types. Launch your software and check for updates. Mine now confirmed working with new v 5.00.20 update, released on 09-03-2019.

All your videos on the FT3DR are awesome. Can you do a complete tutorial on programming the Yaesu FT3DR using the RT Systems software on a Mac?

@@frankwc0o I'm also new to Ham radio and I use a MAC. I also use RT Systems. RT Systems has very little help for us Mac users. And they don't seem to do a good job of explaining all the things the software can do.

Do the air bands and other bands that you can only scan go into different banks? Also, different tabs in rtsystems programmer. Do the frequencies imported from repeaterbook all go into one bank or multiple banks and tabs in the software? Very nice video

THANKS SO MUCH! I'm a MacOS user--- and it seems that there are limited programming software for the MacOS. I'm going to be buying this software TODAY! --- and using the SD Card method. Any suggestions for doing Wires-X with the FT3DR and a Mac? --- cables vs hotspot, etc, etc. FYI: I'm very new to the digital ham world -- my last HAM radio was a Yaesu VX-5R... ;). 73's

I am glad to put the first thumbs up to you Frank. I received the FT3D two days ago and I am glad to get some support. I have also ordered the Wire X cable set SCU 39 expecting that I could Programm the Radio with this cable. Do you also now about this ? Frank, if I may ask, are you having issues connecting Wires X thru a repeater? I hit the X button on my FT3DR and while its flashing briefly hit it a second time...the X goes solid but it does not display the rooms like it used to, just stays on repeater frequency.....but X is solid like its connected. Tried 2 wires x repeaters within reach...both produce the same results...kinda bummed

IMHO this software is a 20th century solution to a 21st century problem. RT systems has not innovated did illy squat for years. Spreadsheets suck. Come on guys cant you do better?
