I had a few questions around the SCU-LAN 10 remote module for the new Yaesu FT-DX radios, so I have done a very quick and dirty guide on how to get the IP assigned and the software working. If you have any issues whizz over to the Gazlab Facebook group: / gazlab post your question on the forum..

WOW I thought after 30 years in networking I was supposed to know this. that was just one of the most complicated setups of any network box ever. I want to thank you for you hard work in showing the rest of us. Yaesu you have the best numbers with the 101D stick to radios and hire another company for your network adapters. and still I keep asking myself WHY didn't they just build it IN ? specially the 10 , it just came out ? sorry for my rant appologies to all. the 7610 just keeps looking better to me

I have two to install and now wishing I did not. I like the radio. I do not like this. A pox on companies that let the pimple faced geeks in the back corner of the engineering office design this kind of hook up.

I would say this is a pretty standard way of setting up a lot of things. I don't think it looks more complicated than setting up a lot of other things as router, cameras etc. It has gotten better by years with how easy things are to configure but this was not overly complicated at all. /Mike, SJ2W

You didnt define a default gateway for the SCU LAN box- that could be very important- if you want to operate remotely.

You need to set the default gateway to the IP of your router otherwise you will not be able to access the device over the internet, even if you open the ports on your router. The device needs to have the default gateway set.

Hi Gary, great video. No disrespect to your efforts, putting that aside. But this has to be one of the most convuluted network setups I've ever seen for an HF radio. Like someone else said in the comments being as this radio was only launched a few years back, you'd think Yaesu would of looked at what smartphones are capable of and built in networking into the radio for starters(like the 7610)has and wifi and made it a simple case of having an app sync'd to your fx10, and to your own wifi network in order to work. All this faffing around with i.p addresses makes me not even want to bother with remote operation...kudos to you though for working it out 👍🏻😉

Hello Gary, Good explanation about how to remotely connect the radio to the network, all clear to see the fancy display and some features but what about operation?? I goes only on CW, how can I remotely use the radio on CW??? I need another device close to me on my PC?? The question is also valid to who does Digital, RTTY or SSB modes... An interesting demonstration, might have been easier if the SCU-10 defaulted to gaining an IP address on the LAN via DHCP at least then it could be accessed and configured from the LAN. Would also have been good if the unit had a WIfi interface. I know none of these issues are insurmountable....

hi Gary, good video thank you, question for you, how do you get cat control to logger to track the freq while using this remote box ? i have it setup and working but now i lost the usb port on my ftdx101 so now i cant track the freq in my logger, any idea? thanks

i noticed you hooked the computer to the lan 10, for programming the ip address, then hooked the lan 10 to the router and the computer aswell, my question is can the radio be controlled fromn anywhere else away from it on a different computer or else?

Dear Gary, first of all my best wishes for a happy new year and health for you and your loved ones. I followed your tutorial for the Yaesu Scu lan 10 very carefully, thank you very much for this very clear and detailed video. I have nevertheless a problem related to the emission; I followed the Scu lan 10 manual perfectly for the configuration but I cannot transmit from my laptop with Windows 10. Do you have a solution for this? I use a usb headset with built-in microphone. Thanks a lot for your help. Best Wishes, Alex

@@TheGazLab Dear Gary, I followed all the instructions in the manual and enabled the microphone in Windows 10 but I still can't transmit... Maybe I have to change some settings in the Ftdx 10? Hello Gary. I have one of the last new FTDX5000MP on order from Martin. I work mainly SSB. Have I made the right choice? Or should I reconsider and perhaps go for the FTDX10 or an FTDX101D/MP? Interested in your view. Thanks, John

@@TheGazLab I know Gary; I am going around in circles. So worried about making the wrong choice! The 101MP is really another £1000. Some of the eHam owner comments aren't hugely positive and that causes concern. Do you guys have the 101 and 10 there for me to try if I drive over?

Not internally but you will need to do that externally if you need remote ops

Hello Gaz.. I just setup the Lan10 with the 101MP.. I followed your video to the letter and even reset Windows 10.. I could program the Lan10 ok but when it came to just logging in.. nothing incorrect user/pass.. that was with a direct ethernet connection Lan10/Laptop.. so after multiple attempts in desperation I plugged both Laptop and Lan10 separately into my router.. Bingo logged in first time !! ... Weird?!?

Hi great video got the scu lan10 working fine on my home network even though it doesnt show on my virgin media superhub/router page ? but it works ok all i need now is a guide on how to port forward for remote control whilst away from the qth ? does anyone have a guide on this ? thanks .

Does it have any automation functions? Recording voice to file, sending from file, scanning frequencies, triggering event if activity on defined freq?

Yes you install the software and give the credentials.. provided you have no port issues all should be well …

Have you tried to access it from outside the network, for some reason I can't access from outside my network I setup port forwarding and static ip but no luck, my remote nas servers and computers are working perfectly but not the scu-lan-10! Inside the net is working but not out!

It drove me mad, I gave up. It just sits there, blinking at me. Scorning me. Yaesu have been no help at all.

You need to open UDP ports not just TCP. Check to make sure you are opening the right ports on the right protocol. If you do not know the different between TCP & UDP you should go look that up.

Hello, sorry to ask, I have the system installed with my dx10, but when I use the MOX, I don't have any audio output to the air, I use a windows tablet, it has mic, I check the mic settings, they are good, I can't use the ptt button because it's a touch screen, but I changed it to mox and it works to tx, what it could be?

You can try a small keyboard? But check the sound card settings in the setup software

@@TheGazLab I just did it, and a mouse too, the dx10 picks the audio from its mic, but no from the tablet, I can't use it remote like that, if I disconnect the dx10 mic then no audio, probably I'm doing something wrong 😔 I tried the ptt button and mox button, same results

@@chrispteemagician you would need to do IP and port forwarding in your router. then you would need ot set up a VPN using the public ip in your router. each router has its own vpn setup procedure, and some have no vpn capability at all, so start there and see if your router can do a VPN session(google it) it can be a pain, but it will require a deep dive with google, and depending on you network knowledge, possibly some hands on by someone who had done this before.

What is the port number used by the controller? I can access my security camera system as I have a static IP on my router and use port forwarding to the NVR. I would think this is similar, but one needs to know the port number to program the router.

no sorry :-( but you could use something like HRD as I believe that had a server inbuilt, the FT3k has a SCU17 built in so would allow PC control and sound.. or you could trade up to the DX10 lol Gaz

Not really sad, pc’s are 75% cheaper than a Mac and very fast for your money.. macs are best left for the artwork stuff .. I have 2 macs all used for audio, video would use for radio they cost too much to take out and about.. you could use a nuc i5 and ssh in to it?? That would also work well. Gaz
