Unfortunately, there are appliances you shouldn't buy. Some are cleverly marketed, so you won't know until they have taken residence in your kitchen or laundry room. Then it's too late. Having a framework of what not to do will bring you closer to a functional and well-designed kitchen. In this video, you will learn about the top appliances to avoid. You also see some worthy alternates to consider.
Many of these problems are annoying yet manageable. Air frying modes, for example, don't work, but the rest of the stove functions do. Having a super quiet yet expensive dishwasher is not the end of the world. I can always say that the steam oven will add to my resale. It's also a great place to hide my daughter's chocolate bears. We never use it, so she doesn't think to look.
However, choosing the wrong cooking appliance and ventilation is a big problem. Plan those well, as they will go a long way to enjoying your kitchen and the rest of your home.

I'm actually in the process of buying appliances and am doing some research so I'm glad I came across this video. I've noticed how many manufacturers are adding the air fryer option which I don't want. I also didn't know about the dB fact for dishwashers. Very informative video.

I don’t think it’s odd at all. I think it may have something to do with the quality of the noise they make, like white noise, or whatever it’s called.

As a professional appliance repair technician with decades of experience, I suggest you never, ever, ever purchase any type of Samsung Dishwasher. Worst dishwasher on earth. Period.

Ugh unfortunately true. After just 3 years of very light use, mine stopped cycling. First repair guy came out, poked around a bit and told me I’d have to get an official Samsung technician. At least he was honest. Samsung guy just swapped out the computer chip “brains” and I had to pay almost the full cost of a new appliance, another year of light use and the damn thing stops cycling again. I can get it working by re starting and opening / closing the door about 6 x till I trick it into completing the cycle.

Am am also an appliance tech and agree completely. I also do not recommend Samsung or LG appliances AT ALL! Over engineered. Hard to diagnose without paying for access to their tech support and being forced to do warranty work. And higher cost is parts and labor.

The one thing I insisted on in our new kitchen was the hood vent to the outside. It amazes me that the contractor tried to talk me out of it.

When I bought my first house there were a few signs that an owner completed " make over " would come back to haunt me...and did they. Number 1 was the lack of a hood vent of any kind over the stove.

I've found that my black stainless steel appliances show dribbles more. I should have gone with regular stainless with a no smear coating.

I agree with most of your points. However, my kitchen is next to the living room in my small home. I love my super-quiet Bosch dishwasher. It is 20 years old. Looking back at what I paid for it, it works out to 40 dollars a year -- and it still works, so every year I own it, the cost per year goes down. I'm good with 40 bucks a year.

BTW, I cooked on combination of gas cooktop and electric oven for many years. But if I were shopping for a new cooktop today, it would be an induction cooktop. The availabilty and prices are starting to get reasonable.

Great points. Our overall point is don't just pay more for the quietest you can find, at a certain point modern dishwashers will be "quiet enough". For the living room/kitchen setup it does make sense to factor in the decibel rating for sure.

Thanks for your remark. Our real estate agent friend just told me about Bosch dishwashers. He said on the expensive homes he built, with high end appliances, the only complaint was regarding the dishwashers which were replaced with Bosch-no more complaints.

We used to have a very quiet Whirlpool. Now we have a Bosch, not noisy, but a bit more; and I can definitely say that Bosch washes better. Ahh, and it never spills bubled water on half the kitchen floor which the Whirlpool did 2 or 3 times, (random, I have no idea why, probably some defect of the sealing).

Biggest tip, don't by something that has a "new technology " ie. Samsung waterwall dishwashers, or LG Linear drive compressors are both distsasters that they're trying to figure out still years later. If you don't get extended warranty you'll be left with a hefty repair bill. Manufacturers are overenginering and making appliances beyond gimmicky nowadays for little not no added benefit. I'm a service tech and most stuff I work on is less than 6 years old. Also, don't buy built in microwave/oven combos. Everyone regrets it when it comes time to repair and replace. Keep them separate.

I think the linear compressor will be the standard in the future with fewer parts and quieter operation. LG should hope so..they warranty it for 10 years

@@shank296 From my understanding you still have to pay to have it replaced. the linear pos gets provided at no cost but theres still the bill for labor. I wouldnt buy one on a dare at 50% off.

Well, I never heard of the vibration reduction technology in our washer but apparently it uses some type of ball bearings to help balance the load in the spin cycle. It was new technology but we got lucky; it works great. There are a few caveats, of course, like being aware of the load. If too small, the spin cycle has a hard time figuring it out. The same with an unequal load where items tend to be heavier on one side. What the washer does is spin up slowly. If it cannot balance the load, it slows down, does a few backwards spins to redistribute the load, then tries again. Mostly it works fine but sometimes if the conditions I mentioned already are in effect, this prolongs the spin cycle quite a bit. So, once in a while, it’s just a matter of physically redistributing the load manually to get it so it can balance properly. All in all, it’s pretty impressive. It will always prevent the machine from spinning out of control and causing undue vibrations. Oh, it’s a Samsung and we have had it in our four unit wood frame building over a dozen years now.

I bought Miele appliances recently for my small kitchen, mostly at prices of about 1200$- 1600$. These include KFN 29162 D fridge, H 7164 B oven, KM 7464 FR induction hub, WWG660 washing machine, DA 2558 vent, and G5840 dishwasher. Any input on these as a service tech? It would mean a lot to me, just to keep my expectations in check. Thanks!

I’ll take old fashioned durability and simplicity over fancy computerized crap any day. When my mother sold the homestead years back, it had a perfectly functioning 40 year old hotpoint gas stove and a 50 year old GE refrigerator (the tank!). Both were total workhorses. And yeah I’ll take avocado green fade over stainless steel too :)

Good luck. These machines don't exist anymore. Those old units were energy guzzlers...newer units are much more efficient, which does take away from durability. In the end the power savings will offset the costs of replacement.

If it isn’t broken don’t fix it. I prefer knobs to computerised. Keep it as simple as possible. I have a basic Bosch dishwasher brilliant, I have a basic Miele electric fan forced oven, no need to pay for stuff you don’t use. Basic four burner gas hob. Basic Bosch front loader. Everything as you said is a workhorse, admittedly 21st century, no frills, no fads, but I get your point.

I love your kitchen layout. Usually, everything we see is a choice between "giant luxury kitchen" or "tiny kitchen built around what was easier for the builder." Very nice to see higher end appliance arranged in a smaller space. I especially love the idea of the sink in the island.

Totally agree on the downdraft stovetop. We bought a house that had it. It was originally on the market for much more, we decided to buy when the price dropped. Doubtless any potential buyer will not be willing to pay as much for a kitchen with that then even a microwave mounted fan.

One huge advantage the Miele dishwasher is the fail safe leak system. Quietness is just a side note. As for a steam oven, I use it all the time. I think that we are in the waning days of gas appliances and in my next kitchen, an induction cooktop. In my kitchens it is always the trifecta of Sub Zero for refrigeration, Wolf for cooking and Miele for dishwashing and for the laundry probably Speed Queen next time around. For cooktops, always place against the wall, never on an island and have a good vent that vents to the exterior of the building and if over a certain CFM, you MUST have a make-up air system.

Last dishwasher I purchased "was" rated above 50bd but I paid at least $250 less for it than a 44db unit. With $12 of 1 inch insulation foam from HD and an extra 30 minutes of install time for me; I brought it down to well below the original rating if not comparable to the $800-1k units. A little insulation in the cabinet and installing some between the front metal panel and the internal door panel woks wonders.

Bought an old style whirlpool washer and dryer back in 2004. Both lasted until last summer (2021). Repairs just weren't working anymore. For the washer, we upgraded to speed queen and love it to death! But for the dryer, I asked my husband to just go to a used appliance place and get the cheapest, oldest, working dryer they had. We got one that was about the same age as our old dryer but had recently had several parts replaced. It works perfectly. At the end of the day, I just need the clothes to be dry, and I didn't care about fancy technology.

Planned obscolescence. Appliances built now aren’t built for years of usage but rather have a limited life span requiring you to buy a new one more frequently. It’s all about profit.

THANK YOU for your comments on downdraft vents. These are a fashion item that all the flippers are putting in their kitchen remodels these days but they don't do their job well and i worry about grease buildup (and fire hazard) in the ductwork under the floor taking the fumes out of the house.

I actually love my washer/dryer combo, no issues with lint so far. It only seems to overestimate the drying time so I just set it manually based on the load size

Yeah. Most are great, especially for people with tight spaces. Just don't forget to keep it clean cause lint is also a fire hazard. The only one I had that broke was a Beko, and the store even gave me money back cause the broken part wasn't available anymore (4 year old machine still in waranty) with the model not being available anymore.

I bought my appliances as simply equipped as I could find. The fridge has nothing coming through the doors. The only extra was the ice maker, which I did not connect as all my friends have units that leaked. Besides, I have the recipe and make my own.

The dishwasher part was the best. I had a GE Profile for 18 years, it was noisy, just like the ones in the motels you sometimes get, but it cleaned great. We replaced the GE because the detergent flap broke and it started having electrical issues and my wife just wanted change not a fix. We got an LG, really quiet, the tines moved and really high end..wow.... the piece of garbage couldn't clean for its life. Terrible and the detergent bin broke before the year was up. My sarcastic joke about the machine is I could manufacture quiet dishwasher if it didn't have to clean, it's called a cardboard box. We replaced it with a much cheaper and noisy Whirlpool and it's a fantastic workhorse that cleans everything great.

A couple of places I’ve worked on have drawers in the toe-space of the cabinetry, I’m a plumber gasfitter, if you can get your sink cabinetry made with real wood instead of compressed mdf, it will be stronger and straighter for longer, I installed an induction hob, but prior to the wall linings I installed a gas pipe with a male thread underfloor to allow something to connect to a pipe they may not be available for fittings in the future, the gas pipe might be useful for alternative gases we arnt using yet, if you’re in doubt, just install copper, another thing I did was fit an LED light behind the high mounted cabinets where the kettle is and toaster, it’s better than blinding yourself late at night turning on the ceiling lighting, and I recommend installing washing machines dishwashers and fridges over a channel drain or drip tray, they will leak one day. Don’t use gas ovens, they are really inadequate in manufacturing and become very degraded internally with bugs,grease and the electronics still die.

Our Maytag fridge died after 10 yrs. We replaced with a Samsung, horrible issues with ice maker freezing up. We have a 46 yr old Amana we use in our garage. Still running great. The only thing I have to do now for it is to replace some door gaskets.

i loved my all in one mini lg washer/condenser dryer combo. perfect in a small space, and was actually more gentle on clothes than a regular dryer even if it was slower

For scratches on black stainless take a fine point black Sharpie and very carefully fill in. Not perfect but it helps to make scratches less noticeable. I really love the look of black stainless in the kitchen and it is much easier to clean than plain stainless.

That may work in the short term. Hopefully the manufacturers continue to support that finish for years to come so customers won't have to mismatch finishes when it's time to replace an appliance.

Years ago we bought a super quiet dishwasher, that also means much less spray pressure and much longer run cycles. Also much harder for the tough dishes to get clean

I had a super quiet kitchen aid - didn't clean worth a darn, it was basically used to sanitize the dishes. It was a piece of junk. I regretted that purchase within two weeks. But, - too late. I now have a super quiet bosch from a better appliance store. love it love it love it. (it has a coin sized light on the floor so we know it's running.) We've had it for three years now, and it cleans really well.

idk i bought a bosch 800 39 decible. best dishwasher ive used by far (for cleaning and drying) and super quiet. was worth every penny.

@@harmarize I have a Bosch 800 series too. Fantastic dishwasher. Only thing that doesn’t completely get clean is when I put small bowls on the third rack. But it’s designed for utensils, and those always get clean.

Wanted a Bosch knowing how quiet they are, and also wash really well, but didn't want to pay the high price. Got one at a surplus store that sells scratch and dent items, and picked up a $1,000 unit for under $500

I actually use my air fryer function in my oven quite a bit, and love it. The type of pan matters a lot though.

An oven with an air fryer is the biggest con in the history of kitchen products. All convection ovens can "air fry", because air fryers are simply miniature convection ovens with a catchy name. Nothing more, nothing less.

Thanks for the black stainless tip, I was considering one of those. I got a Samsung ceramic glass oven a year or so ago by a local store's "counselor" and it's my worst nightmare. I can't cook anything properly anymore. It's either too much heat or too little and the electronic panel is already messed up. I'm just about to go to a flea market and grab a coil model out of frustration, lol.

I love ❤️ your videos. We bought LG products originally for the slate type color. BIG MISTAKE. The dishwasher lasted 3 years due to water pump failure and the range hood 2 years the motor went up. Thanks to your videos l learned about quality over aesthetics. Based on your videos we bought a 800 Bosch integrated panel dishwasher and painted the panel the same color of our cabinets . I love ❤️ the dishwasher . We also bought a Fotile wall mount range hood and a hood cover that we painted the same color as our cabinets and it’s powerful and sucks most of the smoke 💨 out of the air when cooking. I would suggest anyone looking to purchase new appliances to do research and look at your videos so that they will not buy inferior products that they have to repair or replace in a few years. my mom had a combination washer/dryer that worked very well for 15 years. It survived her, we sold it with my parents' house. Electric ovens work great, they're the norm here and have been for decades. Far lower fire and explosion hazard, which is why they became so popular in the first place.

I can't agree with your comment about dual fuel. It is much easier to add humidity to an electric oven (via a pan of water) than take humidity out of a gas oven. As far as the cooktop, all pots/pans work on gas. Peppers roast on gas. Popcorn pops of gas. Stir fry works on gas. Gas works in a power outage. Powerful gas burners are possible with double rings, etc. You can see the flame. Chefs use gas, etc.

The newer gas cooktops and ranges do not allow you to ignite them if there is no power, the gas will not come on.

Agreed. Our house came with GE profile stove, dishwasher, overhead microwave and GE washer/dryer set. With the exception of the microwave they are still going strong. The microwave died, but we hated it anyway and will replace it with a proper hood vent.

Today most of these appliances are made by 3 main manufacturers. They use the same compressors, and even the most expensive have the same internal parts.

We bought one of those super quiet dishwashers. Three years later, it started leaking from the bottom. After getting repair estimates ranging from $250 and up, I decided to repair it myself. It was just a $10 gasket that needed to be changed. I recount all this as I could not find the KZfaq video for the repair that was on the brand of my dishwasher. Turns out, it didn't matter as I discovered that >90% of the internals of any dishwasher, whether the bottom of the line or top of the line, are exactly the same. So yeah, no more high-end priced dishwashers for us ever again.

Incorrect about the dishwasher. I was told this same thing you said by the appliance guy when we build our home. So I went with that instead of the extra quiet one I wanted. It was not quiet as you say. Not all decibels are equal in a home setting. I now have the extra quiet one I wanted in the beginning and it is as advertised and I love it. It is SUPER quiet.

I would say downdrafts don't benefit from gravity / or more accurately buoyancy. Cold air falls which pushes warmer air up. But you're right, if you were left that as on the only option I would reconsider the design. The quieter dishwasher _maybe_ if you were in a very small condo with bedroom close to the kitchen? 100% agree on the two-in-one washer dryer, those things do neither well.

I love love my Kitchenaid gas stove with electric double oven. So well designed. The two burners with “simmer” mode work better than any stove I have ever owned or used. I also like having one smaller oven. Uses less power and heats up very quickly. Great overall design!

Induction is the way to cook! With my setup, you can take the pot off the burner and the surface is only slightly warm. All the heat is transferred to the pan, and it cooks like a beast!!

I've been preaching induction for years. I swear it boils water in half the time. Also virtually no heat rejection and less worried about someone touching a hot burner that has been turned off.

Black stainless. Looks nice but I always show people our nicked up floor model. You need to look into what "black stainless" really is. It's not an "oxide" coating. It's a thin polymer coating, think of it like a lacquer. If it was an oxide coating like gun bluing, it could be retouched but the simple fact is that that you can't blue stainless steel.

I buy turn knob appliances, no keypad operation. They are more senior friendly and last longer. I don’t buy bells and whistles, just basic functionality. I stay away from too many small countertop electrical appliances (no insta pot) because I basically use a small slow cooker, a rice cooker, a electric kettle, and a blender; nothing else.

I know now-a-days you buy what they have available. But keep in mind: in general, no matter what the device, the more features it has, the more parts there are on it to wear out. And the reality is that you will never use more than a small number of available features (maybe 10%). How many of us truly use our TVs and home stereos to their full capacity? There are like 50 buttons on the remote and I use maybe 5 of them. Most of the buttons on the remote or the device itself I've never touched. And I have a degree in electrical engineering. Our washer has about 20 buttons on it, and 99% of the time we load clothing, add soap & softener, and hit "start".

Another thing is the more ‘bells and whistles’ the appliance has, the more likely to have some kind of service break down. Example: ice maker dispenser on the door of the refrigerator. Ask an appliance repairman what he repair the most. For the cost of ONE service call you can buy a small freestanding countertop ice maker that makes ice quickly and efficiently and keep its frozen and makes more when needed.

We use our steam oven all the time. It’s great, because even if you just use the convection function, it heats up much faster than our larger gas oven range combo. I was really on the fence about buying it, but we really love it.

I purchased a gas dryer many years ago (a well-known brand). Unfortunately, I found that it took more than 3x the time to dry clothes than an electric dryer. Yes, the dryer was vented properly. Just thought I would mention it.

Lke-for-like a gas dryer will usually dry a load in half the time of an electric dryer. This is due to the fact they fire and provide maximum heat output instantly. I searched across more than 10 different sources and they all state an advantage of gas is faster drying time. It's likely you had a defective model with one or more failed solenoids which caused your long drying time.

I bought the same Amana dishwasher, love it. Previously I had paid more for a Bosch, nothing but trouble and poor customer service. I know some people like Bosch, but I don't think they make them the same as they used to. Ours only lasted 3years.

Had a White combo washer/dryer that worked great; until a "guest" forgot to take some nails out of his pocket, and jammed the machine. But that was over 40 years ago and they don't makem like they used to. My 38 year old Kenmore (whirlpool) refrigerator is still going strong, as are my 40 year old Kenmore washer and dryer. And my 40 year old Kenmore dishwasher too.

Its good to see your kitchen is so practical hotplates and a wall oven for ease of use and awareness of safety. In my kitchen I have gas hotplates and an electric wall oven and will always have it this way. After I had a bad experience when I lived in a house with only electrical appliances and one particular day we had guests over for lunch and there was a power outage and I had to wait for the power to come back so I can finish cooking the lunch and it was an hour delay it was so frustrating.

I replaced a Bosch DW last year. I originally bought it because of low water use (septic). It lasted 20 years. When I bought a new one just like the old one the saleswoman said "this one will not last 20 years". I appreciated her honesty. The new one is even quieter than the old one, which was not loud. But the real reason I'm commenting is to tell about my in-laws reefer. A GE bought when they got married in 1947. Just sold it for $100., still keeping the beer ice cold 70 years later! The gasket was shot and the finish was gone, but it still did the job.

I had a Bosch washer-dryer combo which was made in the late 1990s, the only issue it ever had was the bearing failing on the blower fan (after almost twenty years daily use) - an easy fix. It had a lint removal cycle consisting of a deep rinse with fast drum rotation, which seemed to work well enough. There have been combos around since the late 40s, and the mid 50s Bendix Duomatic combo worked very well - there are a number of them in collections today. I guess the newest machines are much more cheaply made, sadly. Even Miele quality is not what it used to be.

My LG is 8+ yrs old and works amazing. Has the same lint removal process (sometimes I think the machine is gonna take off!) and we did have to replace the motor 2yrs ago but that was my fault. I don't wash anything with sequins in it now.

You can mix and match almost any appliance manufacturer products with another. It's all personal preferences. Some will argue the stainless is different colors and in some instances it is. But my argument to that is the same stainless catches and reflects light differently throughout the day so even with the same product line in different spots in the same room can look different.

@@YaleAppliance1 The finish on Samsung stainless is different, but it doesn't blend as badly as they claim. That said, though, I wouldn't buy another Samsung appliance anytime soon, as my oven basically blew itself out (we fought them for nearly 10 months, but they [mostly] fixed it) and I've replaced several parts on my fridge. A lot of people I know with their fridges or Kenmore fridges made by them have terrible problems with the freezer icing up, not closing properly, and leaking water.

I did black GE stainless appliances and it looks soooo good with the oil rubbed bronze cabinet pulls/knobs, faucets, and hanging light over the island. Willing to take the chance on scratches and none so far after 18 months. Second the recommendation of induction stove top! Heats faster, cools sooner, almost a zero fire hazard, and clean up is a wet soapy rag in seconds after a spills for a spotless factory new top. You can put a paper towel under a pot and boil water (try that with gas or electric). Most I do is use a mixture of baking soda, hydrogen peroxide, and dishwashing soap for any stains on induction burner that got burned on between the pot and element. You just have to get induction pots/pans and get use to the electronic sounds of the induction stove top.

Related to the downdraft vent: the downdraft stove/range. We have an older Jenn-Air downdraft stove that came with the house. Sadly, there are only two brands of those to choose from when the day comes to replace it: Jenn-Air and KitchenAid. They come with a hefty price tag, too… around $3,200. The alternative would be to buy a conventional stove and install an overhead vent, but the ductwork would cut through two kitchen cabinets, or would have to serpentine around those cabinets into the dining room.

Another point you might like to make is...washer dryers...the wash part can take ( for example ) a 9lb wash load but they dont tell you it wont "go" into Dry mode if the load is over 6lbs... wake up and your loads still only sun dry...so you need to remove a part of the wash load..in order to get the "dryer" to work... Not Fun !

We do not have a range. We live tiny and my wife has figured how to cook with just one portable induction burner, a microwave oven and a very good Frigidaire 24” under counter oven. The portable induction burner when not in use resides in an under counter drawer, thus freeing up its footprint for other use. We can both work on food preparation in kitchen which is less than 8 x 8’ (32 sqft). Our entire apartment is 550 sqft (50 sq m).

I love you guys, but I have to say, after using one in Europe, I bought an LG washer/dryer combo and I love it. I bought it used, so it is now about 5 years old. It does require the lint filter to be cleaned monthly and I clean the gaskets and door after every wash. Another owner of the same model on Amazon updates his enthusiastic review on a regular basis. He felt his machine wasn't drying as well as it should and, being handy, removed the cabinet and vacuumed it out-it was pretty linty. A coworker mentioned that she and her husband did that to her standard washer, which puzzles me a bit, but hey. I may do a proactive clean on mine, but I still love it.

Thank you for this valuable information. I will watch more video's before I buy any appliances that are a waste of money. I bought a Kenmore washer and dryer back in the 90's and still working great other than the dryer is needing a heating element and timer knob. Also a GE electric range I'm guessing that was bought back in 1978 for this house and it is still working great other than I had to replace the heating element and a burner assembly unit and a Whirlpool microwave from the 80's that is still working. I use this more than the stove. So it seems that appliances made back about 20 to 30 years or so ago are far more reliable than todays new technology ones with all the computerize failure parts.

Dual fuel (gas top/electric oven - often with convection) is the most common type of range here in Europe. I bought mine 22 years ago and I still love it! I'm planning on redoing my kitchen sometime in the next 5 years and I don't know if I'll go dual fuel again or induction/electric. I get the feeling that the ease of cleaning an induction cook top is what is going to sway my decision...

Oh! Forgot to say, go induction all the way! Much easier to clean, great to control, much safer with no gas leaks and if you don't have anything else running on gas, you can get rid of gas, have a safer house and probably save up on bills. Yes gas is cheaper but then you pay all those fees and taxes and inspections... I went full electric, spend 2 years just using a basic IKEA Tillreda induction portable stive and love it. Now I am waiting for my proper induction cooktop to be installed. And yes, I know how it performs. My mother had the exact same model I got.

@@TheAllMightyGodofCodI guess the cost difference varies a lot from country to country but where I am gas is far cheaper than electricity (even when you facture in the taxes). My city is actually renewing the gas distribution network to accommodate a cleaner natural gas. Unless you have a very energy efficient /passive house it's most likely you heat (central heating and water) with gas, so you need to do the inspections anyway. I'm starting to research different makes of induction cooktop as it seems to give the best of both worlds. 👍

Just leting you know I have a induction stove top and they are awful.They scratch easy and difficult to clean especially if anything ovetflows and spills onto the stove top when cooking.E.g milk.Takes alot of scrubbing

I've never seen an induction stove in a professional kitchen. Gas with cast iron pot/pan seating (grate) allows for immediate visual of temp setting on a burner. Every flat-top burner I've used gets scratched all to heck after the first sauté...shaking a sauté pan on heat is a natural procedure required of any sauté procedure and a cast grate is a perfect medium for it. I'd never use anything but a gas stove with a cast iron grate. Electric ovens are the easiest even though baking temps vary more than other ovens. I'll stick with gas top/electric box...

Thank you for putting in the effort and time to making this excellent video. We are currently um-ing and ah-ing about a Miele combo-steam oven. It's $12K here in Aust, so a lot of money. Some folks we know absolutely love theirs, others wish they'd never spent the money. It's a hard one as we love the idea of healthier cooking, we do sous vide occasionally etc. and the Miele certainly promises much. To your point, perhaps it's a matter of whether we're really going to put in the effort to properly learn how to utilise this thing. Cheers and thanks from Sydney - Dave

This is helpful. We used to own a combo washer & dryer. They’re not worth it. We only run wash on it. But when we use the dryer option it began to have issues. It lasted 10 years with 5+ fixes. The mechanic refused to fix our machine after we reached their limit. He said, “I won’t fix it anymore, get a new machine”. The 5+ fixes was at year 10. 😅 We got a new one recently, an LG. The old one was an LG too. Their washers are amazing. I highly recommend their machines. From what I heard the dryer has a 5 star rating on energy. 😮 Very Impressive.

Thank you for this video! I am not sure if it is just limited to Samsung, but I have a French door fridge with ice and water in the door. The ice maker is nothing but trouble. Before I bought it I wondered why they would have an ice maker in a refridgerator compartment, but I thought they had engineered it to work this way. I regret not going with my gut on that one. If I had to do it again, I would get a refrigerator with the ice maker in the freezer. I spoke to a repairman on e who was servicing this ice maker and he said any of them with this design do the same thing (ice up). He said nobody has a good solution for this issue.

The best option to Air Fry Mode is to buy an air fryer. (: Line with aluminum foil, put it anywhere in the kitchen, and you can get a good model for under $75 (pre-inflation). I can’t even think why’d you need to have it as part of another appliance! Thanks for the video!

Great advice and insight, terrific channel. I wish you were in Los Angeles, I'd gladly pay a premium for my appliances to know that I'm getting value for my money and I'm not about to stumble into buying junk. I just bought an LG refrigerator. I had a few questions, I first went online, then called LG. Two hours later I gave up (the operators didn't actually know anything and were looking at the same useless web pages that made me call them in the first place. I figured out enough to swap the door, shrug off any other questions I had and just got on with it. One troubling detail. Doing research prior to buying and while trying to set it up, I found many people asking, "Is the stainless steel door magnetic?" (I know that generally stainless isn't but nickle content varies so some stainless is) Every answer was "No, the doors are not magnetic." My magnets say otherwise. Whose answering these questions? (That's a long beef I've had with Apple. Have a problem and they direct you to the customers supporting customers web chat where.... you can find a lot of people with the same issue or question; of course they don't have answers that's why we're there. It's like going to the doctor for a medical problem but instead of ever getting to see the doctor, you can only speak to other people in the waiting room. If they have the same symptoms they might have some knowledge- if they knew the cure they wouldn't be there. How effective is that going to be? When the Magic Mouse (version 1) had reliability issues the top rated answer was You should only use the Apple branded rechargeable AA batteries because _they're a slightly different size_ than all other AA batteries. Seriously! The world's largest company was addressing a widespread consumer issue with pure nonsense. The second answer was how to fold paper to squeeze into the battery compartment. The answer I finally arrived at was, get a Logitech mouse.)

Bought one Apple product. Ipod. Cost like 160. Lasted barely out of warranty. It looks like new. Never abused or even dropped. Never again. Overpriced scam.

Just wanted to add in those mounted combination microwave ovens with the range vent hood built in. The slightest thing goes wrong and you're likely down two appliances and the parts are expensive and possibly hard to find anywhere. In fact nearly all combo appliances will be bad ideas except for a good toaster oven IF it suits your lifestyle.

I just got rid of mine. It came with the house, and I’m surprised it lasted as long as it did. It didn’t really work as a vent. This was a notoriously horrible line of GE Profile that was long discontinued. I just had s a Hauslane PS18 under cabinet range hood installed. I love it!

That’s also the problem with combo washer/dryers. When either unit breaks, you have to replace both. In our house, we hardly ever use the dryer. It could easily last 20 years or longer. I might replace the washer in 10 years but why throw out the dryer then?

Our house came with a microwave hood and after a couple of years, the grease and steam that condensed inside the vent started leaking into the microwave and shorted it out. We replaced it with a vent that's easy to clean and a separate microwave.

IMHO, Microwave over stove venting is a joke. We have it in our current house (and a vacation place), installed after we gave up the Jenn-Aire DOWNDRAFT range (gas top, electric oven), which had been great but our realtor friend told us it looked old--planning to sell soon. Big mistake, bad case of losing quality for looks. Very much disagree on Yale on downdraft, at least when considering Jenn-Aire. The rear mounted downdrafts may be a different ball game.

I like the condensation dryers, but the Bosch self-cleaning is a failure waiting to happen. You simply can't get at the condenser to clean it if you have animals and the additional hair builds up and blocks it from working. The previous condensation dryer I had worked for years because regular cleaning of the condenser did the job.

The only one i really disagree with is the dual fuel range, and here's the reason. I pressure can. Induction or radiant stovetops have glass surfaces, that are only rated for 50 lbs. My canner weighs 33 lbs...empty. Only a gas stovetop can handle more than 50 lbs.

I did not know that. We're looking to replace our dual-fuel with an induction cooktop. Thanks. I think I'll figure out how to make the lights work in my oven, keep the gas cooktop, and buy an induction plate.

My wife was going to give her large pressure canner to my co-worker's wife, but they have a glass top and couldn't use it. She had to buy one of those electric canners instead. Also you can't use cast iron, which is why my wife didn't want a glass top.

@@jonkirkwood469 I'll second the induction plate. Costco and amazon have them cheap and they are MARVELOUS! They are the future, but you do have to change your mindset when using big pots.

lets also add that glass cook tops are an absolute nightmare to clean and induction cooktops require special pans. Who wants to replace their existing set of expensive pans? Not Me. In my ideal kitchen, I'd have a gas range (including the oven box) and a separate electric wall oven specifically for things like baking which require more precise temperatures. If you aren't already cooking your meats with a digital probe thermometer... I got questions cuz its not your hot box that's the problem... its that you're relying on an unreliable method to make sure you don't over or under cook your meats... especially since you can't so easily see and feel the meat like you can when cooking over an open flame like a camp fire and lets be real, most people these days don't have the skill set to tell if meat is done without a thermometer or *GASP* cutting into it... *cries in dry meat*

@@chrislj2890 you can use enamel coated cast iron on a regular glass top (not induction)... I use my dutch oven on the stove top frequently because it heats more evenly than the non-stick.

we've got a combo washer/dryer that's more than 10 years old and has never needed maintenance despite daily use. It's one of the types with a heat pump, and there's a filter that collects lint and other grime which is easy to clear. We don't live in the US though.

Learned this with a convection microwave. So if the over is being used, you have another smaller over to cook things. in almost 4 years, we have never used it once for that, just a microwave like we usualy do. The downdraft though for a kitchen reno we did because it was on an outer wall and the exhaust run was very short. Been 3 years now and it seems to work as it should, as I watch steam go towards it and outside I can feel and smell the vented air outside. Maybe thats why it works so well, compared to an island one where the run is a lot longer to the outside vent.
