In this video I'm working on a very nice Yamaha C7 that has large string grooves and strident tone. I go over filing materials, filing procedure, and a bit of voicing techniques.

Nice! They really are one of the great piano models. There have been several versions over the years. Look by the model number to see if there's a letter next to it. The C7Ds are nice as are the new C7Xs. Let me know.

Love your videos! I've been doing some minor needling on my own C7 whenever it gets too bright, and it's gotten to a point where I kind of want to try reshaping the hammers myself, since they're so flat on the top. May I ask what's the reason behind leaving those few millimeters of string grooves alone?

Hi! That’s a good question. Let me start by saying that it takes quite a bit of experience to get a nice shape. Perhaps it would be better to start out on a lesser piano than your nice C7. To answer your question though, the strings grooves on the top of the hammer act as guides as you approach the final shape. Ideally when you’re done the grooves are all the same length and depth indicating that the hammer top is level and that the filing is even.

@@the_daily_ping Haha that's what I thought re: experience. I can imagine it takes years of practice to even do a decent job at it! I'll definitely do my research and get lots of practice on "lesser" pianos first. Thank you for answering my question! cheers

@@ActualGlacier Experience is the waste of 80% of your time learning something without supervision. Trial and Error, with no one but yourself to spot the error and find a way to correct it. With good supervision and constant control of your work and its results you can save a lot of time. Takes a good teacher, so there's your problem when it comes to piano technicians.

Oh I see. There’s no standard price for piano services. Also, this video is just a part of the service that this piano received. Along with the hammer reshaping there was some regulation and voicing. It was a half-day service. Your best approach is to ask around for which techs are the most reputable in your area and then call and see what the going rate would be.
