Hi all. I’m the guy in the video. Just wanna say thanks if you pressed the 👍 below the video, it really helps our independent store get found online! My playing session with the CK88 really made me take a step back and think deeply about why I like playing the piano. If you’re considering buying one, I hope what I speak about in the video (and the playing!) helps give you a different perspective compared to all the other videos out there. Happy playing! 🎹

wow chris.. the is the first time someone has treated and feted an electronic musical instrument with so much love as if it were a living breathing creature.. say a thoroughbred race winner horse.. and your choice of simplistic yet beautiful playing makes anyone step aside to check the available credit on their cards and head to the nearest store.. I havent seen a better presentation on all my years surfing on youtube.. you truly are a soulful and sensitive person.. Good luck

I like you Chris have been blown away with how this keyboard has been developed and set up. As you say it is not the top Stage Piano in the Yamaha range, or as technically advanced as the YC with its better Organ engine. However, I think this keyboard offers such a rich blend of easily accessible capabilities, that in many ways make it more distinctive than either the CP88 or YC. In addition to that wonderful mix of capabilities, it also has in built speakers, which make it ideal for many practice situations or small acoustic venues. It also has the option of battery power, where no easy mains is available. All of this in a package that weighs just over 13kg make it in my eyes superb value and probably the best stage piano for live gigs where weight is an issue.

Really enjoyed this demo and especially your honestly Chris, had i not already got my Yamaha P255 (I'm a bassist/guitarist and only really play piano for personal home use) I would most certainly consider this keyboard, however I may consider the CK61 (had been looking at the YC61 in the past) to sit beside my two Yamaha Reface units (CP & YC) which are both nice but limited by just 36 (mini) keys each and no real sounding acoustic piano should i ever decided to venture further. It would be very interesting to hear (or better still a YC vs CK demo) your comments between both the CK61 and YC61. Once again thanks for this demo and look forward to hearing more in the future

I just bought my ck61 for those reasons. My reface dx is the only set of truly portable keys I own and this seemed like the perfect compromise in terms of size and function. I do not regret my decision, it's a beautiful keyboard all around. I would say as long as I continue to progress in my playing, it will be worth the investment. However, I still wonder if I should have checked out the mx61 first.

Dude! Your review of this instrument rekindled my desire to become much better as a (amateur) pianist and musician! So thanks for that! But I actually am researching them because I want to be able to record on a DAW and create some music/songs. I was originally looking at the DGX-670. How does this compare to that model and can I do all the recording I need with this keyboard? Thanks in advance if you see this and reply. 🙂

I just wanted something to practice on don’t have the space to add speakers. This will fit the bill. Ok, so the pianos aren’t perfect. To me there’s no such thing as a “perfect” piano sound anyway. But for the price this sounds good to my ears. I’m keeping an eye on this one and the new one from Roland.🤨🎶🎹👍🏾

Yamaha CK88 USB flash drive problem please help!!! this is a great keyboard besides one thing that drives me absolutely crazy! i want to save my live set sounds to a usb flash drive because the 160 live sets are not enough for me. i tried to connect several usb flash drives but the keyboard doesn't recognize any of them. in the manual it says only "some usb flash drives may not work" but not which ones and what are the requirements for a usb flash drive to work. i cannot buy hundreds of usb flash drives and try them all!!! anyone can help me???

Personally i would say so. This one has fantastic real-time controls. And frankly, best electric piano samples on any stage piano. The selection of different Rhodes is super inspiring. If you only play acoustic piano and you never change your sounds, then pick by which keyboard has your favorite acoustic keyboard feel. For the actual sound engine, this one, as a stage piano for more creative purposes than just acoustic piano, is far superior imo.

I have a DGX 660 and when I played the CK88 at my job, my playing transformed where I struggle for creativity and true expression on the DGX660. I’m sure the difference between your 670 vs CK88 is smaller, but the CK88 has to sound and feel better if I were to take a guess

Do you mean the device on the right of the keyboard panel (you can see it in the overhead shots). That's the device I was recording the keyboard's audio into. It's a Yamaha POCKETRAK audio recorder - and is very handy.

Honestly I think the default EQ is a bit dark/muddy. Try brightening it up with either some cutoff frequency adjustment or adjusting the mid/high EQ. Also, as with just about any Yamaha keyboard you can get some pretty luscious sounds by adding more wet depth to the damper resonance effect, and reverb to taste. It’s no Motif, Montage or CP4 even, but the selection of sounds here are all quite nice and with some customization you can get really great sounds.

I wonder if the CK will hold up in the future. I am a piano newbie but I am a guitarist and sound guy for 18 yrs and very picky for sounds I have programmed multiple midilines on the hammond b3x plugin, so organ sound is suuuper important for me and I wonder if the ck88 hammond will do. They say its shrill and the upper drawbars are too bright and that I shall get a YC rather

I’m sharing the following as a piano instructor that taught out of music store for over thirty years and at times would help the store with customers (during student cancellations etc). So, the dedication of time one must put into learning any new keyboard/synth that isn’t an entry level toy, so as to capture it’s overall basic functionality (should someone be interested in knowing about it before purchasing) is nothing to shake a stick at. The above would be the requirement for an on-site worker at a music store, who’s instrument is that of the certain employees background/education. So…add to that, a video like this requires whomever to revise and make concise, what to pack into a review that will best inform potential online/social media customers, so as to spark not only sales but repeat customers that were satisfied that the description matched the purchase. Add to that the playing of the keyboard to show off the features spoken of… Add to that, the time it takes to set up the cameras in an area of the store that usually wouldn’t have a dedicated space for just making video content. So, setting up two cameras (above and in front) is something of an annoying time vampire. Add to that the setting up and tearing down up of the microphones necessary to capture what is being recorded. Add to the the calibrating of all devices, including the featured instrument, into a mixer. Add to that all of the time required for post editing between the two cameras. All together (and I may very well have missed some things) what you have is quite a bit of time, thought and energy required to create a video that is meant to stand as a rep for a store that has a channel. So, that said and considered…keeping concise and not getting off topic or perhaps forgetting key points, without laboriously memorizing a review to perfection…the help of a monitor to read from is a wise decision for a person who still has a store to run. I, personally (but knowingly am speaking for the majority of musicians who just want to know as much of the keyboard In interested in, in whatever amount of time they are able to record), couldn’t care if his eyes are on the idea of me at all times. Many videos feature reps for the company who’s job it is to know that specific keyboard as their only concern for a considerable period of time and that’s it. Or, if it’s a musician, who’s channel is dedicated to usually receiving the instrument free, or on loan, is most concerned with only selling their channel, for views (and also being a sort of rep for the company). But they are free of a primary demand of running a store.
