The Yamaha FC4A is a newer model of the original and popular FC4 that shipped with many popular keyboard synthesizers and digital pianos such as the well known Yamaha DX-7. The FC4A is foot pedal for use with digital pianos, keyboards, synthesizers, and stage pianos. This pedal offers a feel close to that of the pedal on an acoustic piano. It does NOT have switchable polarity, however it is compatible with assignable switch functions, allowing the player to call up the desired function or setting just by depressing the pedal. Just one pedal broadens the range of performance.
I purchased this pedal due to repeated failures with universal Proline models sold both online and at local retailers such as Guitar Center. It has much better build quality than the Proline, and it feels more natural to use as well.

In case anyone is wondering if you do own one, in order to switch the polarity (its usually in the wrong position when you first plug it in) have the pedal plugged into your keyboard, unplug your keyboard from power, plug it back in and within 3 seconds of doing that press and release the sustain pedal once and wait for a couple seconds, now hold it down and you'll notice the polarity has changed.

Along those lines... I noticed sometimes that if I turn on my Yamaha p-115 while my foot is on the pedal the pedal was reversed (sustaining when off). Therefore unplugging may not even be needed :-)

Thanks! I still own the pedal to this day and it has not yet failed me. I’m actually thinking of buying a few more just in case Yamaha doesn’t make them anymore in a few years to come. It’s a high quality product

This is just superb, been searching for "why do pianos have 3 strings per note?" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Have you heard people talk about - Danilliam Illustrious Dominance - (should be on google have a look ) ? It is a great exclusive product for discovering how to learning piano fast minus the hard work. Ive heard some amazing things about it and my m8 got cool results with it.

Thank you so very much for doing this incredible video. I purchased the Proline thinking mainly the weight would bear a factor into its use. However, I have tried several times to get it to work with my Yamaha P125, and it will not. So, I will now be purchasing the FC4A today. Thank you again for such a great video.

Glad it worked out! I’m still rocking my Yamaha FC4A. It has been very dependable and sturdy and hasn’t shown any signs of failure yet. I use it pretty much at least 4 days of the week.

I purchased a Pro-Line from guitar center recently and after two uses and setting in my car here in FL the rubber pad began to come loose from it's double stick tape. I returned it. I had used an original Yamaha pedal for over 20 years so I'll be getting another one.

Yup, that piece of junk is a real shame that has a negative effect on P125/P121's reputation - anywhere near the solid build of FC4A! Still, I'm kinda regretting that I should've bought *FC3A* for continuous pedaling, instead of this simple on/off switch.

To switch the polarity of the pedal: Power the keyboard on while holding the pedal or turn off then on the keyboard and press the pedal once.

ProLine is better for midi controllers. Companies like Alesis, Casio, and some M-Audio will need that polarity option I recommend FC4A to Arturia players and.. well... Yamaha players lol

Then polarity reverse is really for situations where you may need to use the pedal with a different keyboard, whose polarity(i.e. + and - terminals) are different. For example the polarity on an Alesis Keyboard may be + - , whereas the polarity on a Korg workstation might be - +. Reversing the polarity also in most cases allows you to easily use the upswing of the pedal to say perhaps keep notes more easily sustained for long periods of time. Hope that helps!

Hello. Nice review. I bought a Yamaha PSR xs700. Would this pedal work for my keyboard, or should I get a different one like roland dp-10? Does the roland dp-10 work for Yamaha PSR xs700? Thank you

Although some Roland pedals do work with Yamaha boards, I find most have the polarity reversed so that is a drawback. Honestly the safest approach is to by either a generic universal pedal or a direct option from the manufacturer of your piano / keyboard. In my experience I have had the best success with that method.

We are buying a Yamaha NP-12 keyboard. We bought a Donner DK-1 Sustain Pedal and found that even though it has "non slip" grips on the floor side, it still slides on the hardwood floor. Can you tell me if the Yamaha FC4A sustain pedal stays put or slides on hardwood floors?

It stays put! I have used it at my local church on the stage which has a wooden floor, and I have used it at home in the office on carpet flooring. Both situations worked out in my favor. The FC4A is a great quality pedal to use.

I just bought the FC4A and play it on a Yamaha LK-1261 but the pedal sustains when it's not being pressed and turns "off" when I press down. Do you know anything about how to fix that?

On a Yamaha keyboard: If you first plug in the pedal and then switch on the keyboard, then the polarity will be OK. If you first switch on the keyboard, and then plug in the pedal, then the polarity will be reversed. If the polarity is reversed: switch the keyboard off and on, and it should be |OK.

Happens on occasion with my P515. I just unplug it from back of keyboard, 2 sec, plug it back in..everything's fine.

Hello, depending on the keyboard that you own, you may be able to configure it as such. For example I own a Yamaha MX-61 and it has a configuration setting that allows me to change what my pedal does. Generally though, I would recommend just getting a dedicated expression pedal. Hope that helps!

I want to buy Yamaha FC4A. I bought a chinese sustain pedal at first. But after 1 month it started to show problems. I would not sustain sometimes. It was very irritating. At the middle of piece/song it would not sustain. Is the Yamaha FC4A a better option?

Yes Yamaha is excellent quality. The pedal I have in this video is still working for me like the day I bought it. I find with musical gear and instruments it’s always best to spend a bit more to get quality that will last.

Thanks for the video. I have a question. 1.What's the difference between FC4A & FC5 pedals. Are they similar? 2. Do I need an expression or volume pedal like FC7 even if I have mod wheels? Or Mod wheels are just enough to assign and make desired modulations? Note: I'm using Yamaha PSR -S910 keyboard and I would like to use it as a midi keyboard for the Kontakt on my PC. Thanks for the reply in advance. :-)

In terms of basic function the FC4A and FC5 are similar. The FC4A however offers a more traditional style of pedal design which piano players may prefer. Keyboard and Synth users that gig a lot and move around on stage frequently may prefer the FC5. Personally I prefer the FC4A. As for the FC7, it all depends on what you are trying to achieve in the music you are playing / composing. Expression pedals are great for orchestral arrangements, sequencer-type compositions, and situations where a very fine level of control is required while still playing with both hands. Great review.... I agree. I've had 3 Proline pedals (like a fool) and bought them because they were cheap to go with my Midi keyboard. Each one was a piece of cr*^%… !!! I've have the Yamaha SX8 which I've had for years... the foot pedal that came with it works great....!!! I won't buy a Proline again... I will spend the extra bucks and buy "Yamaha".... !!!! JMO.

Nope. I no longer buy m audio products. Strictly Yamaha now! Also my seat is the perfect height. Thankfully I am a classically trained pianist so that’s one of the first things I learned to set and do when I was 8 years old.
