Spotlight Music Show

Georges Fleury (*1945 in Basel, Switzerland) worked for the largest Swiss music chain (Musikhaus Hug) from 1968 to 1972 and managed the Hammond-Engros business there, but also appeared as a musician, for example in a jazz trio or in the jazz rock band "Caleidoscope". From 1974 he also worked more closely with the manufacturer Yamaha, for whom he was organist, demonstrator and music lecturer. Among the instruments he presented was the legendary Yamaha Electone GX1 Furore that you can see in this video. The GX1 was the world's first organ with a built-in polyphonic synthesizer. Its price was about US 56,000 ! At the end Georges plays his own composition "Road to Happyland".
The Yamaha GX-1 was also played by Keith Emerson from Emerson, Lake and Palmer in their legendary music video "Fanfare for the Common Man".
Spotlight was a music show for the youth, which was aired between 1968 and 1978 by the Austrian Broadcasting Corporation (ORF). It was the counterpart to the shows "Beat Club" or "Musikladen" in Germany.

This video - among others -- shows something that I call the "revolution of affordability" which made making music available to the masses. In the 70ies and 80ies both instruments (especially electronic), stage equipment and especially recording equipement where not affordable for amateurs or home musicians. This has changed totally. The "democratisation" of music has happened! THIS is the context in which we have to look at pioneer-instruments like the GX1. Yamaha has taken huge steps to create music technology - the GX1 is historical milestone. Today we can have it all. What great times (concerning music).

yeah one would think that because of that more talented people can get heir hands on amazing instruments and compose lots of good music. However, the opposite is the case. Music is more primitive than ever before. Turns out a lot about music is actually a learned skill that takes years to develop.

The fact remains, there isn't an affordable (or any) instrument being made now that's like the GX1. It's a one-of-a-kind deal and only maybe a few dozen were manufactured.

After 45 years, only Yamaha can live up to this sucker! Only a multi-manual keyboard or synthesizer can cut it. Newer synth engines might have the capacity to duplicate what’s in the GX1, but it takes more than just keyboard splitting to pull it off. It’s got to have an organ-inspired chassis.
@NuisanceMan

Given that it's analog and has, I think, 36 oscillators, it's pretty hard to duplicate even now. Approximate, maybe.

The Yamaha GX-1 is able to produce some really nice analog synth textures that even by todays standards are considered top notch - this however, requires programming your own sounds. For example, here is the GX-1 #5088 with custom sounds playing the string parts in ABBA - I Let The Music Speak: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hN-Wqc9msZyufok.html or more recently the synth parts in Ane Brun - Hero: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/m6-Go6x0zM-0eY0.html Even though the drum machine at its time was considered "...the most realistically voiced electronic drummer I've heard..." (George Gibbs/International Musician And Recording World/February 1976) it is really not that useful today - it was actually removed from both Benny Anderssons's and Keith Emerson's units to lessen the strain on the power supply.
