Piano Experience
Action
Given that the FP60X is equipped with the PHA4 action, which is a plastic-based key action, some viewers may be wondering why we’re not comparing the FP90X to the Yamaha P515 since both of those pianos use a wood-based action.
Well, the reality is that the 90X costs about 50% more than the 515, whereas the 60X and 515 are priced much closer together. The other consideration is that while the PHA4 action is plastic-based, it’s still a very high-quality, pro-level action with escapement and triple sensor detection, two specs you’ll also find on the 515’s Natural Wood X action.
The differences between plastic and wood actions are that wood actions tend to be quieter, and you feel less vibrations from the body of the instrument coming through.
In the case of this comparison, both of these actions tend to be on the heavier side - in fact, the NWX action is easily one of the heaviest digital piano key actions out there, even heavier than most grand piano actions.
Both sets of keytops have textures, with an ivory texture on the PHA4’s white keys and a matte finish on the black, whereas the NWX has a matte finish on the white keys and an ebony texture on the black.
Piano Sound
The 60X is equipped with the sample-based version of Roland’s SuperNATURAL engine. The core, default grand piano tone is referred to as Concert Grand, and the other piano patches are just the same sample with different settings.
There are various other presets available via the My Stage function, but if you want to go a layer deeper there’s then the Piano Designer function which allows a high level of editability and customization.
The P515 is equipped with two sample sets - the CFX grand and Bosendorfer Imperial - both of which are very high quality. You can do some deep editing here too courtesy of the onboard Piano Room function.
To compare the piano sound between the two pianos, what’s striking about the upper partials on the P515’s CFX sample is a real crispness bordering on harshness, whereas the Imperial sample and 60X, in general, are more midrange-heavy. On the other hand, the Imperial sample does sound a little bit too compressed at times.
The CFX is very dynamic, as is the 60X, with more mid-range emphasis. There are other subtle differences, and a winner really just comes down to personal preference.
Additional Tones
Both pianos are essentially loaded up with the full GM2 bank (Yamaha calls this XG Voices) on top of several dozen core tones. The core tones are the star of the show on each piano, and most users will spend the vast majority of their time on these core tones.
The electric pianos are strong on both pianos, though distinctly different, and there are quite a few more to choose from on the 60X. The DX tones shine on the 515, whereas the Rhodes tones are better on the 60X.
