Great video and demo! Btw, in your opinion, which recording sequencer is better: the Yamah MODX or the Yamaha PSRX700? I'm not sure how I feel about the Yamaha MODX sequencer since it is a "pattern sequencer." I have been using it for a couple days now and it feels limiting since it loops and creates a pattern. How does the PSRX700's sequencer compare? Is it better? Any big differences? Thx for the help!

I'm in the video at around 4 minutes mark and I'm LOL-ing already as I'd watch a very good stand up comedy show. I enjoy a lot Woody's creativity combining his musical knowledge with self-mockery and humor. Got my PSR-SX900 a couple of weeks ago, which replaced my 13 year old PSR-S900. Really impressed with the advance in technology in that time. Thank you (and Camera boy) for the continued videos you post.

Thank you guys for this great video again! Love your channel! The SX900 sounds to me like a toy, it can’t impress me much. Maybe I’m spoiled with the Yamaha flagships models I’ve owned. Since I own a Kawai MP11SE and sold all workstations, I love playing much more. Looking forward to your next videos.

I enjoyed Camera Boy's help! IT's strong praise for this new keyboard if you were up late late late jammin on this board. I know that jammin on my various instruments, synths, guitars, basses, and a real piano, is the most fun thing in life, ever. Your demo jam might be one of the best bits you've done in a LONG time. Woody, what a great channel you have. I have been playing keyboards for 30 odd years but like so many others have slipped away. There are only so many times you can play 'Play Misty' without getting bored of the same old same old. You keep tempting me back. Back in the day Yamaha and Technics used to fight it out and the launch of a new keyboard was always a big, big occasion with a real sense of excitement. Alas, far less now - And where are the youngsters? They don't want machines that look back to the 80's like the Genos does or play Austrian ompha band styles, Glenn Miller or the classics. If only the new PSR had the sound stage of the MODX and backing tracks that inspire a new generation that would bring keyboards back centre stage.

Excellent performance on a stunning instrument. I’m a proud Genos owner though I’m thinking of getting my hands on a PSRX-700 to use as a portable as I perform at care homes and other BUT BUT I’m NOT parting with the Genos which will stay at home.

The concept of this keyboard reminds me a bit of my dad’s Gem WX2 but in a more current up to date version with the styles.

Love the feature that removes the parts. Could be well handy for live. I usually muste parts then save them as new registrations when I ve mixed em to my liking. Really love the yamaha range of arrangers. I would not be put off by the busy parts. Just take out the ones that are cluttering. I am lucky enough to have a Genos. Needless to say I am literally in love with my keyboard. these look so good too.Please tell me if you can. Do you think the pianos are a step up from the old psrs975s? Or are they just the same? I definitely prefer the piano on Genos to Tyros 5 which was extremely good but is now improved.

Have you ever interfaced the psr to a daw. It seems to me a workstation doesnt go well with a daw because of the extra midi channel setups. Been wanting to try some lofi with the 975 because the sounds are so good, but the setup is horrible. Any thoughts or quick setup tips?

i used to do it with my psr-s910, worked out really well, but was quite a head-scratch to get everything set up well, but I don't remember much about it now

Great job Woody. I loved your previous videos on the PSR-S970, and purchased the 975 because of them. You asked about the suggested camera angle for the SX900. I recommend using a tripod camera, angled down from above (or perhaps from over your shoulder) to see clearly what you’re doing with the control buttons, and simultaneously (using a second camera or USB direct feed from the display screen) have a picture in picture of the main screen of the PSR, so we can see (in real time) the styles, voices, tempos, etc. This would be most informative.

Woody Piano Shack sorry, I have not tried it. So many reviewers show themselves playing, but one can’t really see how they’re utilizing the control buttons. And no one includes a PIP view to help the viewer understand the settings, styles or voices that are being used in the demo. I think showcasing the new touchscreen and seeing how you manipulate it in real time would be so helpful. So maybe instead of a direct feed of the screen to the PIP, have a video mounted so we can see you touching and changing the settings on the screen. That would be best.

Regarding “content,” many (like me) are now deciding whether to sell their 970/975, and buy the new 900, so going into the important changes of the 900 would be helpful. I know you sold your 970 (too bad), so it may be hard to compare side by side, but you could cut in old clips from your first reviews. I’m very curious about the new USB monitor capability and if it improved the compatibility and resolution. Also, the usability of the touchscreen, and if the latency of the screen actually is not an improvement. Just a couple thoughts. Thanks again.

Hi Woody! I was wondering how the black keys on your PSR-SX900 are holding up. There's a video on my channel demonstrating general looseness, clacking and knocking sounds, for comparison purposes. Strangely, I first began to notice it (shortly after purchase) when coming off the F#5 onto the G5... a similar sound heard in your video at approximately 10:22 from the same key ~ and things gradually got worse from there. Thank you for all that you do... love your channel!

Hi woody, I really enjoyed your video. I hope bought a PSR SX90 Bonners - they said it was second hand but also. Brand new(?). So I have been watching some of your tutorials, it was supposed to arrive today, but I missed the delivery by ten minutes because my wife forgot to leave the note on the front door saying that our.neighbour across the road would it for me - I had a Podiatrist appointment . Anyway, I should get it tomorrow. I really liked your composition.

Hi Woody The SX900 looks very nice, and a nice step up from the s975.Have you had a chance yet to review the Genos ,if not see if you can get one from Yamaha for a spell,I'm sure you would enjoy it,I have one and really enjoy using it. Good video,and the camera man is great ,well done Eddie

Hi, could you tell us how much of the 1GB memory takes after installing the pre-loaded pre-installed Packs?? I've read somewhere that the SX900 comes with 4 pre-installed Expansion Packs. After installing them, how much memory space is left out of 1Gb?? Thanks in advance.

Sounds pretty good to me, one question - if you're jamming and coming up with chords, or trying to cover a song - does it show you what chords you are playing on the screen as a reference to what you're playing? Also can you set the sustain pedal to hold one section and not the other? i.e. if you had a piano with strings layered and wanted the strings to hold.

yeah, it displays the chords it thinks you're playing, there's also a chord tutor feature which helps you voice the chords. i haven't tried the sustain pedal features.

@@WoodyPianoShack Ah that sounds good, i really enjoy pattern modes on the MOXF/MODX and do wonder if an arranger may suit me for general enjoyment/composing. But i like the flexibility of setting my own arps on a workstation vs specific preset styles. i.e. programming my own drum patterns into an arp and then saving that into a pattern.

PLAYING MP3/WAV Files FROM USB in SX 900 Hi friends, My SX 900 is not showing the MP3/ WAV files in a USB stick. I want to play the MP3/ WAV Files for Karaoke singing. But when the plug it behind and click on the 'user' button under style, it doesn't show the files inside. It does show the folder which contains the files, though. Am I doing something wrong? I request your help, please.

Hey Woody! I bit the bullet and got the PSR SX900. The modulation stick does not seem to give the strings section a vibrato but rather increases or decreases its volume...am I missing something here?

that's just a configuration, sounds like it's setup to configure swell/expression which is good for strings

@@WoodyPianoShack thanks.. I'll look deeper into it. I was busy midi linking it to my Roland FA08. I now play the sx900, styles and all on my Roland piano weighted keybed and it's awesome. It took a bit of configuring but got it finally.

still getting to know the sx, and I've not owned the 975, but if it were me, probably no. unless you really prefer that touch screen and need the extra styles? the chord looper is really fun though, but they should have added that feature years ago imho.

Wondering if you or any of your viewers can help: Hey mate. Firstly, I really enjoy your videos. Always informative and really helpful. I’v just purchased the Yamaha PSR SX900 and am really enjoying it. My question may be a bit technical so, I won’t blame you if you don’t know the answer. I’m blind and was hoping to be able to access most of the keyboard functionality through the buttons. I’v already loaded Yamaha’s Voice Guide onto a USB pendrive which is in the keyboard and means that I get some speech feedback for features like which sound I’m selecting; which style I have and functions of some of the buttons when I touch them. But, when you start to dive into individual elements, the voice feedback is not comprehensive enough to work with you and just drops you. So, I’v no idea as to how I’d record multi tracks; I can’t access the mixer so, can’t adjust simple things like sound volumes against each other. Can get into the vocal/harmoniser but, can’t make any changes. Any help, greatly appreciated.

interesting question! many years ago I taught a blind friend to use his Roland D70. It was amazing how well he was able to remember long sequences of button presses to navigate through the menus. Congrats on your PSR, and thanks for sharing the info about Voice Guide, I was not aware of that. Really great that it opens up the keyboard to visually impaired. I don't know though what capabilities it has. For many operations I'm afraid you have to use the touchscreen. Not only do you need to see it, but it's extremely challenging even for a sighted user to touch in the exact right spot as the touch zones are sometimes much smaller than my fingers. Get it wrong and you're thrown into the wrong menu. I find it frustrating myself. I recommend you post your questions on the PSR Tutorial forum. It is very active and there might be somebody who can share some tips with you.

Hi Woody! Can you please tell me if the SX900 has Bluetooth connectivity? The Yamaha website is a bit unclear on that as it says it depends on the location where the instrument is sold. Cheers!

Great video. My only big bug is that the keys are not touch sensitive. That aside, I love this keyboard. Why did Yamaha do this and how do people get around this? I currently have a PSR 770 and am looking to upgrade very soon. I welcome all suggestions and ideas. Do I get a different brand even though I love Yamaha. Thanks.

What do you mean the keys are not touch sensitive ? Of course they are! This is the flagship PSR, the second best Yamaha keyboard after the Genos. All Yamaha keyboards from the PSR E363 upwards have touch sensitive keys.

Sir, I have SX900 and my microphone effects settings are messed up. I am trying to play, sing and record together. For best vocal effects, which settings you would recommend? I tried Insertion settings in Mic with Legacy and Ambience but not satisfied with vocal singing quality I am trying to find something closercto like studio recording quality. Please advise. Thanks for your feedback in advance!

hi! i never experimented much with these settings, but right out of he box it sounded pretty good with my sm58 mic. but you'll never get studio recording quality, you should consider be connecting mic to usb audio interface and using better audio fx plugins. the mic input on the psr is more of a convenience for live use.

glad you dig it, I played the chords a bit different each time, but was trying to play this: intro G Bm A verse D F#m Bm A bridge G Bm A E the lead chord, was A+B+E I think... :) good luck!

yamaha all the way for arrangers! not for any particular reason other than the YT demos for the Korg don't rock my boat

Woody Piano Shack Korg has one advantage over Yamaha, though: under any of their PA arrangers, a fully-fledged synth is hidden so that you can design your own sounds.

This is very interesting what you are expressing PSR SX 900,I would love this so very much. , I would like to know more too of the back of thee keyboard-does all the cables come with it I hope. I want to listen. I have learned a lot on my organ playing in church and concerts, I also have a Kurzweil Mark 12 Ensemble Grand and want to trade it. I alive in W. Hartford , Conn. You do very well showing and telling about the keyboard. Let me know what steps to take in getting this PSR SX900 and trade my Kurzweil. A second hand would be fine but would need to be in excellent condition. thank You 😮😮 12:32

second hand is always best value for money if you know what you are doing when you test it out, or buy from somewhere with guarantee. the only cables you get are for power.

if budget is tight and there were one available, used PSR or even TYROS is still a great choice, gets you a lot of enjoyment for less.

@@WoodyPianoShack they're similarly priced but was wondering if a used higher spec model was better than a new lower spec model. I've never had an Arranger before.

@@davecjd it's really hard to say if one is best, it really depends on your needs, you'll need to check the features that are important to YOU and see which ticks the most boxes!

@@WoodyPianoShack I've been into synths forever but am not a great player so was thinking an Arranger might be a bit of fun to jam at home on. I like 80s, film scores, dance, rock. I had a MODX7 so am also thinking of getting an 8 as I did like it.

You should also let him edit out the first 24 minutes of the video. ;-) I'm not sure I'd want one of these - impressive as it is, I'd end up spending all my time making cheesy pop instead of trying to play better. But... It does look like a lot of fun and judging by the limited sounds we've heard, is the first Yamaha that sounds like it's got some soul. Big minus on losing the mod wheel tho. The combined joystick is one thing I don't like about Roland gear.

fun comment! gotta say this joystick is better than the roland ones, with more travel and better response. yep, you can definitely fall into the cheezy pop genre with this, but put in a bit of work tweaking the presets and I think it's totally avoidable. :)

reaper is a professional and affordable DAW (digital audio workstation), it's what I was using in this video.

@@WoodyPianoShack well I also use daw... FL studio... But FL studio don't support keyboard voice recording... That's why I'm looking for a software for recording onboard sounds...

Sounds great. I have researched the Yamaha PSR-SX900 versus the Korg PA1000, both of which are the highest-rated “prosumer” arranger keyboards. I concluded that the Yamaha would be a better fit for me. I’d rather write songs instead of tweaking sounds on the Korg.

I bought the Korg pa1000 but it’s soo complicated.. the keyboard touch is spongy and hard to play. But it sounds awesome. The Yamaha keys have a better feel. I like both! I can’t sell my Korg as I love the thing even though it’s a complex machine

I can't understand why people were upset at you having tea and a cookie. It's not like you were drinking a beer while smoking a joint. People can be so critical of each other, but yet they themselves are not perfect. Nice keyboard by the way. I have a Yamaha XF Motif and can't replace it with anything else since Yamaha don't have anything else that can sample the way it does.

It is actually nice to have built-in speakers on an arranger, it enables you to play at home or in a small venue such as a café, a old people’s home etc., without the need for an external PA system.
