Unboxing, review and tests of the Yamaha SLG200S silent guitar which is the steel strung guitar that is part of the Yamaha SLG200 family of guitars where the SLG200N is the nylon strung version of this guitar.
How to play the tune I used to test the guitar; • How to play 'The troub...
Review of the nylon strung Yamaha SLG200N: • Yamaha SLG200N silent ...
In this video I open the box it came in and assemble the guitar and inspect the Yamaha SLG200S in detail and take a good look at it's features. I then try short recordings using various effects and pickup settings so you can judge the sounds produced by the Yamaha SLG200.
This guitar was polarizing when it first came onto the market because people either loved the way it looked or they hated the unusual design of this guitar. Personally I think it looks great and after a little adjustment time if feels great to play. Even though Yamaha don't market it as a travel guitar I would say that, that is what it is and the fact that it's quite lite and can be folded to more or less half it's width makes it a great travel guitar.
I loved this guitar and would recommend it to anyone and I thinking of purchasing the Yamaha SLG200N which is it's nylon strung brother, so I can review and test that one as well. I am interested to know if it is as good as the steel strung guitar.

Is the SRT system worth getting the new version, as opposed to a used 130 (which does not have the SRT system)? Thanks..

@@guitar-academy They did the same thing with the "silent sax" (YDS-150). First, it never existed. Then, some promo - but no product to buy (for months). Still not generally available in the USA - I somehow found one on Amazon. They know what they're doing for marketing - and instrument making. My soprano sax is a 1987 Yamaha. As to the silent guitars, it looks like 2002 for the first gen, with the latest at 2015. So, maybe not for a while!

I was recently "bequeathed" a number of guitars and peddles by an acquaintance who left the state. (Hawaii) One of the guitars was a perfectly preserved Yamaha SLG200S in it's original case. I was really quite amazed by it's multitude of functions and particularly by it's very unique sound quality. No less am I impressed by this video and your very thorough and clear review of this guitar. Mahalo Nui Nui !! (Hawaiian for BIG BIG Thanks!!)

Audio engineer tip for you - when running audio in to another device, e.g. a desk… pop the input device to max level / output and alter the recording / receiving device as you wish to kill the hiss. This means the pre-amps in your desk won’t need to up the signal received. Loved the video and liked it, thanks

I have one of the early steel string models - the 100. Love it. I even put electric strings on it - .010's, and it plays like a Les Paul, and sounds like an acoustic all the way. I'd like to get one of the nylon string models, too. Doesn't matter where you go with it, on stage, in the studio, around the house - it's completely functional. I have no complaints at all.

Thank you for this. I am seriously leaning into learning to play the guitar. When thinking about purchasing an initial "student" guitar this one came to mind (an accomplished musician learn to play guitar and used this one initially as his first), because of the "silent" design and size etc. tuner, headphones, amp out and music player in. I may be too old to learn this but don't want to buy a cheapy. The only other guitar I am considering is the PRS SE P20E. This one is a little more expensive but still under $700 for the model I'd like with hard bag. Do you any other suggestions?

Thanks, I hope yamaha updates the guitar models mic and pickup, DSP, and effects including delay. Technology has gotten so much better with the fender acoustisonic and others and smartphones being more powerful than laptops. Now is the time for a major upgrade, including the latest bluetooth codecs, and built in speaker system updated electronics, hiss reduction, and computer models for different guitars etc. Way more presets and customizations are possible, even with sharing users settings. Along with built in drums and backing tracks for practice, higher quality headphone dac and amp, and 2 of them.

Well if you think about it my fernandes nomad from 20 yrs ago does almost all of this? Amp/pickup/mic modeling, drum machine, effects. Does it sound as good as this for acoustic settings and in general? Definitely not but point is technology is there. I will also be waiting on a Yama update to this machine it’s been untouched for at least 10 yrs if I recall.

Sounds really lovely, and thank you for such a detailed (and calm...) overview of this instrument. I have one question just out of curiosity; do you think one of these guitars would be a reasonable choice for someone looking to pick up guitar playing in general? Especially if they aren't sure whether they really want to play acoustic or electric.
@guitar-academy
@guitar-academy 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much 😃 That's a good question . . Honestly, all I can do is give you things to consider, the decision will be very personal to yourself and depend on you budget, music tastes and determination to learn guitar. If you have the money, then this is a good middle ground as it has a similar feel to an electric guitar. However, normally I would suggest getting a cheaper guitar to start with, then you can buy an electric and an acoustic. I've been teaching for over 30 years and it's amazing how many times I've taught people who like to listen to one style of music but prefer to play another . . 🤔

@@guitar-academy That is a good point! I haven't played an instrument for almost 20 years, and never a guitar, but lately feel inspired to tinker. Just for my own enjoyment. Initially I was convinced I wanted to get an electric, but I've been a bit fascinated by other alternatives as I was researching. But you are quite right I suppose; I could probably get two decent instruments for the price of one of these, if I wasn't happy with my first choice! Thank you.

Thanks for such a good review, you have really good presentation and explain clearly (thumbs up). I tune in NST (or C Pentatonic) C G D A E G which requires light light top strings and heavy bottom (in relation to the top) i.e. .09 to.54. I wondered if you, or anyone else, has tried this guitar with the same and if so what do you think? Cheers J.

Is a great guitar. I removed the molded urea saddle and replaced with a bone saddle and that helped balance out the bass and all strings with improved clarity.

You show plugging this into the line-in on the mixer. The guitar is almost certainly a Hi-Z instrument level output. That may have contributed to the hiss and possibly made the sound quality suffer, as the mixer would be expecting a much higher signal level. I would be curious if there is a difference if plugged into an instrument input or through a DI box.
@guitar-academy
@guitar-academy 3 жыл бұрын
It is a standard line out on the guitar 1k ohm impedance and the input on the desk is switchable. It sound a lot worse through Hi-Z because of the impedance mismatch, but good thought . . 🙂

Good vid, would you recommend it for adding strummed AC GT's as background in a recording ?
@guitar-academy
@guitar-academy 3 жыл бұрын
I bought it for recordings and it records really well, but it's very rich and and lacks top end so it's quite hard to make it sound good as a strummed guitar. If that's what you want it for you could get the right sound by changing the strings and setting up the EQ, but out of the box it's more of a fingerstyle guitar. Saying all that . . I don't know your taste and you might like a rich strumming sound . . 🙂

Hi, Thanks for the great review. I was wondering if lighter strings had much impact on the tone? The strings on mine came with may be 11 and I can only play it an hour max! Lighter strings might help but thought it may impact the quality of the sound was my dilemma. Thanks in advance.

Good question . . I like light strings because I go between electric and acoustic a lot and I like them to feel similar. Standard this guitar has too much bass and so putting lighter lighter strings on actually improves the tone. I have 10s on now and I might even experiment with 9's I hope that's helpful 🙂🙂

What do you use on your nails to get them so nice and long without breaking?
@guitar-academy

Nothing, but they brake all the time. It can be a real pain if they brake in the middle of a recording job or music commission. When I started playing fingerstyle professionally I put 'stop n grow' on because I bit my nails badly, but it stopped me biting my nails (it tastes really nasty) 🙂.

Hey GCH Guitar Academy! Thank you so much for this thorough and meticulous review! I was wondering, when you plug in headphones directly, do you find yourself turning the volume all the way up to hear the guitar? I find that below ~70% volume I don't hear anything from the headphones. Thanks

@@guitar-academy Thanks for replying so quick! I see that you've replied to most of the comments here. I imagine that takes a bit of time and diligence so I appreciate that. Just one clarifying question: if you look at 7:48, the volume knob has 7 "ticks," if you will; when plugging headphones directly into the "PHONES" output, at what "tick" do you begin to hear sound? Also, at this point in the video the volume knob is at "tick" 5. Is this the volume you generally play at (specifically when using headphones)? Thanks
@guitar-academy
@guitar-academy 2 жыл бұрын
@@user-jj9gi1ci5n On any acoustic guitar I very rarely go above 7 on the volume because I don't want the risk of signal distortion and the higher the volume the greater the chance of the signal being clipped. When playing normally on headphones I don't take the volume much above 5 because it gets too load, 6 is about right. Also remember when using headphones that you have to turn the guitar on and turn the tuner off, the headphone socket isn't a switching socket.
