I show you how to remove your tank, inspect the valves and make adjustments if needed.

Awesome how-to, thank you! I've always been intimidated by valve jobs, mostly because I've never seen it done first hand. After watching your vid I think this is definitely something that's in my wheelhouse now.

Thank you Steve! you took the intimidation away. I bought a V Star with 22,000 mi. that never had the valves inspected. I took it to a mechanic that wanted just south of $300 to do it. I could pay, but now I think I'm going to do it myself. I thank you for your time and efforts!

that's a very clean bike. i clean mine every 60'000 miles whether they need it or not. that's brilliant about trimmer the allen wrench. you just fixed a huge problem for me. the pinch bolts on my 2015 caponord triple tree are so hard to spin because of stainless bolt in aluminum.. no space to fit anything of decent size leverage doh. thanks.

its a "ring open-end" or combination spanner, as it has a ring spanner on one end and an open-end spanner on the other. A "box" type spanner (or wrench if you prefer), has a "tube" type design. Hope you're enjoying your bolt.

Nice video, one thing I noticed is the front valve you measured is the exhaust but you measured with the intake measurements (0.08 instead of 0.22mm)

Hey man I’m having a lot of trouble distinguishing the TDC for each piston the one with the I -- I I and the one I by itself which one goes first and which one is for each piston ? I’ve put them back together twice already with horrible results

Buying a Bolt tomorrow. I currently have an 07 650 V Star, and adjusted the valves on that about a month ago. This video was very informative. Thanks for making it. Where did you get the manual from, and where in Michigan are you? I'm in Saginaw

thank you make sense , do you have a vid of the risers . is the triple clamp same as the cspec???

Triple clamp is not the same. I have a vid of changing the bars, I can't remember if the risers were on there or not.

my bike is making some rhythmic tapping. correlates with rpm. it is not noticable until the bike is warmed up. I thought it might be valves but I also figured that valves out of spec would be constant, not only when at operating temp. Someone else suggested cam chain. The manual i have is a basic owners manual, not a service manual. Could you do a vid about inspecting/adjusting the cam chain tensioner?
@SuperSneakySteve7 жыл бұрын
It's likely valve train noise and very normal. Make sure you're using the correct weight oil. If you go with thicker stuff it will get more quiet.

why did you take off the plate next to the shift gears ? that red little filter ? good video thank you

You need to take the plate off to turn the crankshaft and line up the marks. Hope this helps.

Now why were you checking the valves on that I'm just kind of curious
@SuperSneakySteve6 жыл бұрын
They get tight over time. If you don't do it you can do major damage. It's good to do the first one after break in.
@h.d.mech.mortenson20983 жыл бұрын
A valve check/adjustment is recommended by Yamaha after the break in period.

How do you know it’s at top dead center without removing the spark plugs?
@SuperSneakySteve Жыл бұрын
There's a witness hole with markings, remember the piston comes to TDC twice. Once on compression (valves closed) and again on exhaust (exhaust valves open) if you simply look for TDC you have a 50% chance of having your exhaust valves open and messing up the adjustment.
@ericx7476 Жыл бұрын
@@SuperSneakySteve do I use a torque wrench to tighten the nuts or is a little past hand tight best?
@SuperSneakySteve Жыл бұрын
@@ericx7476 I use a small wrench and use about the same force I use to loosen it to tighten it. You don't have to smash it hard. These are fine threads. If you doubt yourself then find a small torque wrench and tighten to spec.

"I got the covers off." It would have helped to have shown the removal of the "covers" and at what point it was done. Otherwise, the video is informative, and thank you.
@SuperSneakySteve4 жыл бұрын
Plastic covers just come right off after you take the bolts off. After you remove the tank, take off the covers.

I wish manufacturers made valve maintenance as easy as possible. Shouldn't have to remove so many parts. 😔 lol

This is actually way easier than most. An inline four sports bike is much more time consuming. Thanks for your comment.

How could you tell if your valves were loose by just riding?
@SuperSneakySteve8 жыл бұрын
+Roswell Rider Check them at the recommended intervals. Don't wait for your motor to run poorly, by then it's too late.

+SuperSneakySteve I'm pretty sure my valves are fine because I only have 4,000 miles on my bike.. But I feel like I hear excessive rattling.. I took it in and the shop said that my valves need to be tightened but I think they're just trying to get my money.. There's no way with the bike that only has 4000 miles that my valves could be loose? Right?
@SuperSneakySteve8 жыл бұрын
+Roswell Rider I wouldn't say there's no way, but it would be unlikely. That's why I made this video. Now you can check them on your own and you won't get ripped off.
