In this video, take a look at the legendary CS-80 with Krzysztof Pająk. This beloved eight-voice analog synthesizer with great controls like polyphonic aftertouch and a ribbon controller. Its extremely fat sound makes it an honourable member of the hall of fame of synthesizers. The CS80 was produced between 1977 and 1980.

@@nicholasdorazio10 I think that most of a composer's job is to record, not to perform. I don't know of any storage medium that allows for perfect reproduction of the sound, there is always a mathematical equivalent of compression (even vinyl, the disc erodes and quickly the quality is way worse than a standard mp3 file). From an analog synth to a speaker to the ear of someone, yeah OK this is useful to have an analog synth. But from a synth to any storage medium... you loose whatever edge the analog has over the modern digital. So if your job is to record... well you'd better get a cheaper, more polyphonic, more mutitimbral, more powerful, more in-tune machine, no ?

What would you want?” or such on their IdeaScale site in 2017 though They move like a glacier though, I don’t think anything has come out of that site yet. It is interesting to note the new Montage M8X releasing on Monday does come with a keybed with polyphonic aftertouch, though..

@@Wagoo Well they did kinda remake it already .. just not as an actual reissue that would be 99% true to the original and fully analog. Already back when they introduced th ANX-1 and now in the Montage M. It's of cause not a reissue, but in many ways the ANX engine IS a universal virtual Analog Synth that can make sounds like the CS80 and many other classical Synths. And lets face it. Most people would want a "modern version" that have all the benefits of a modern Synth which you have in the Montage with a variety of ways to mod the the sound of the engine with various effects without outboard gear. But unless you have a very large bank account and knows people that are able to service these instruments It's ji's just not feasable for normal synth freaks to invest in one of these (if Synth freaks actually is normal ) 😂There is so many of the IC's in these instruments that is special made an not even Yamaha have supplies on many of them anymore and can't really help you if one blows up. You have a piece of 6 figured junk on your hands. Even some of faders and pots will have to be specially made or modified to fit in the CS-80. Have a look on the video from Syntauer how involved it is to refurbish a partly broken CS-80. The question that Yamaha made was propably on where to go with the ANX they were were making for the Montage.
@Wagoo
@Wagoo 8 ай бұрын
@@mrdali67 I own an AN1x and even though it's a nice VA engine, it's not a CS-80.. You're talking about the components as if Yamaha would be producing a 1:1 reissue including giant wooden case, original faders and the original IG chips with miles of point to point wiring inside.. It is true some people want that accurate of a reissue, but I don't think that's what most people were asking for. The circuitry would obviously be modernised and probably done using SMT components. Yamaha should have all the circuitry for the IG chips so they could be redone on a modern chip, or done discretely with SMT components. Control pots and so on.. whatever works, is currently available and delivers the same spec to the circuit. My personal suggestion to Yamaha back around 2017 was a hybrid reissue.. whereby they do actually do a circuit modeled VA version of the CS-80 (similar to Roland's ACB).. and perhaps pair that with the analogue filter circuits of the original.. and perhaps the ringmod, which is quite special. I suggested that mostly because Yamaha haven't worked with analogue for years.. and this route seemed far more achievable for them in the short term.. as long as it had the same control layout and polyphonic-aftertouch.. But it would be great if Yamaha did have an analogue engineering team again that could resurrect the full direction of their old analogue synths. SMT components are far smaller, so even though a CS-80 looks like a mountain of madness inside, these voice boards are much smaller reworked today. It would also be okay if they made it a superset and added more features to the original CS-80 design.. as long as it could still cover all the areas of the original CS-80 faithfully

I have two CS-80's. They give you presents every time you play them. For real. The Sub Oscillator is astonishing. Songs just pop out of them especially when noodling around. Fancy playing almost detracts from its beautiful timbre. It's hard to explain its revered tone. Still way beyond the reach of anything today.

Please, Yamaha, listen to your customers. We NEED a CS-80 Reissue! But maybe not as heavy as the original
@bengsynthmusic
@bengsynthmusic 2 жыл бұрын
But that's impossible. It is heavy because of the lead and vintage circuitry. Modern circuits won't be able to have the same flavor. And the engineers who worked on it before are either retired or deceased. So I'm not too optimistic.

@@bengsynthmusic Behringer is trying to re-engineer it. And they already told that it will take a long time to get the job done properly. Until then the Black Corporation Deckard´s Dream MkII rack module for around 4.500 EUR is the only hardware option so far (which is not 100% accurate as the developers admitted themselves...but at least they TRIED to come close). The Krakli Arminator2 VSTi freeware plug-in is inspired by the CS-80 and probably the cheapest way to get that sound. But the plug-in is a bit older (only 32bit).

I have been boat-anchored to a lovely condition CS-60 for about eleven years. She is the 'Queen of the Studio'. My sixty is an eight-voice monotimbral 100+ lb chunk of beauty. One that is a bit dodgy _sometimes_ ....this is with less than half of the exact same circuitry of a CS-80, mind you! CS-60 is generally much more _stable_ than a CS-80, which itself contains about another mile's worth of wiring connecting many hundreds of signal junctions, and 70+ _more_ VCAs needed to route the poly-AT to every mod destination. (that is, on _top_ of 2 x CS-60 voice circuits!!) In the original 80, those ICs and connectors can fail or loosen, fluctuate in temperature, create weird sounding cross-talk, noise and EM interference when a cap goes, etc. - It is a 1st gen polysynth, so it is archaic and idiosyncratic in many ways. And hardly 'prefect' in engineering terms. *- Would I like to trade mine for a brand new one made exactly the same? Well, duh.* It's not a Q! So imho the main trouble is: achieving every engineering aspect under the hood has been changed since, industry-wide - and many many times, and in several ways. I can't imagine Yamaha investing all of the re-tooling, hiring and/or re-training and redundant R&D testing all over again, just to revive ONE brontosaurus-synth platform of the CS-50, 60 & 80. Not particularly any time soon, anyhow. Not with supply and chip fab issues rearing their heads. I would also LOVE to be wrong about all of the Negative-Nacy'ing about that I've just done here 💙 Perhaps easier 3-D printing and supercapacitor abundance will help out in the near future - but then, define 'near'. While I would indeed welcome a new one, I will not be cultivating any hope that it can/will happen in this decade. Sincerely, D Gerry CS-60 caretaker

The difference between the 70s and the 80s is epitomised by comparing Herbie Hancock's tune 'Chameleon' from the early 70s with his tune 'Rockit' from the early 80s. It's like going from Ernest Hemingway to 'Spot Goes To The Farm'. Like going from a meal in a 5 star restaurant to a Happy Meal from McDonald's.
