I got the stem back from the machine shop and mounted the new front end from the 1998 Yamaha R1 donor. I also swapped on some new R6 levers instead of the stock R1 levers that are dated and ugly.

To be honest, i would not dare to cut the stem like that. Interesting solution, hope you will be safe/ok with this. Other then that, i think your bike will look great. Will be nice to see it completed. Keep up the good work and thx for sharing :)

He cut it because the frame where the stem goes through is shorter than the stem. Typically there are 3 ways: 1) use the stem from the original bike press it out of the triple trees and put it into the triple tree of the new fork set 2) machine a new stem and press it into the fork sets triple trees 3) weld a spacer to the top of the frame and put new bearing races in the spacer, effectively making the frame head the same height as the donor fork's frame

That stem's fine as long as the fork tubes are tight there's no way for it to separate.....it's just a pivot point as soon as the tubes are in place. Rider is 2000 times more like to get ran over by a 4 wheeler texting than a stem failure....even that stem failure.

That front end is dope! Although next time just remove the calipers and wheel. It's real easy and you can install each lightweight piece one at a time. What headlight brackets you going with? My eBay one turned out sweet! My other profile is TexasSlinger btw Oh, you may need to re weld those stops cuz the triple is hitting the tank. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Thanks! I haven't tested the headlight bracket yet, but the light did come with some which I think might work. I'm not sure if I need to re weld the stop on. I didn't properly test it yet, but I don't remember anything hitting the tank, so I may be ok?

Check your local forums, ebay, local classifieds and local cafe clubs. you can also order anything online..there are tons of recyclers that always part bikes out. Just google what you're looking for.

Did you know Cognito Moto sells new stems made to adapt the triple tree to older model bikes for about $200 with shipping and new bearing made to fit the frame and new triple tree off the sports bike. They will even press the new stem in for you if you send them your triple tree.

I’m installing a 07 R1 front end on my 920, did you run into trouble with the R1 stem being a larger diameter than the hole on top of the frame?

no, are you saying your R1 stem is over 2" thick(give or take)? I had to extend the stem but there was plenty of room...just get the right bearing kit.

The new bearings did not require pressing in like the factory bearing kit. They just kind of sit there

Hi! I have another question. How did you fix the speedometer after the front fork swap?

all generic speedos come with their own way to install and make it work but the most common is a magnet system. One magnet gets fixed somewhere like a brake rotor and the other goes on the rim for example and as the rims spins, it passes the fixed magnet and that provides a speed. They always need to be calibrated after install, but it's pretty simple. Just follow the instructions that came with your speedo.

Yes I agree. It’s unsafe. The threaded centre shaft is under varying side load as you turn so it could one day split through the valley of the thread. If the threaded section had the same side load all the time I would feel a little better. I don’t build bikes but I would have had an extension collar machined to fit on top or the bottom and that would be fine. If you could not fit both bearing races in then cut the frame and weld it on.

Nice work. In hindsight perhaps I would have preferred the R1 forks on mine, but I used the GSXR ones. Let me know what you think of my version, it's on my channel.

英語なので何言っているか分かりませんが、たぶんステムシャフトの長さが足りないから切って加工してステムシャフトの長さを長くしたんだと思うのですが、危ないですね多分強度、振動によるネジのゆるみ、たぶん緩み防止にイモネジ入れたかと思うのですが打ち換えか溶接シャフトワンオフで作りなおし他方が良いですね。恐れずにやることは良いと思います。ただ命を預けるものなので見た目だけでは機能もしっかりした物でないと。

I wouldn't want to ride that with that chopped stem, I'd have just had a new one machined up to the right specs.

100% That's the thing about custom rides. You never know how somebody put stuff together until you take it back apart and found out. At that point you might as well just make your own ride.
