spare part prices. e.g. VST filter on a F40A is around $90. To fix this, Yamaha wants close to a grand as it involves removing the CST and they wanted to change the pump too. Their warranty is as valuable as the paper its written on. Filter lasted 10 hours on a new install and they were trying to deny the claim. Only way they honored it is because the service manager said and I quote, " I've eaten a ton of warranties for you, you are eating this one!". Five days in a marina to fix it while we lived aboard. Cost close to a grand anyway. Their own certified Yamaha tech told them what the problem was and they refused to budge forcing the service manager to lose it. Apart from that, their engines are great. No complaints once I ditched their filter for a custom SS3166 ultra fine mesh. Because the replacement lasted all of a year till it too died. I'm also not the only one this has happened to. So yeah, warranties are great but if you have to struggle to get it honored with 10 hours on the clock, its worthless. Then you are on your own and need to buy parts. For me, I wouldn't piss on Yamaha and their warranty department if they were on fire. I'd love to know if Mercury or any other manufacturer actually honors warranties and provides reasonable priced spare parts. Particularly consumables.

As someone who works on boat motors daily im speaking from experience. Yamaha is a tight very well made motor the design simplicity and quality are hands down the best availabe even the paint on the yamaha outboards are gorgeous. Mercury has made a ton of clunkers over the years theres no doubt about it. The optimax and the supercharged verados had alot of issues, i really enjoy the supercharged verados and they will last but they always seem to need something which is crappy if you have no outboard experience. Mercury has easy and simple maintainance on the new motors. Back to yamaha, aside from oil changes and maintainance you will litterally never touch them 99% of the time. Yamaha comes with a better steering system, exterior fuel water seperator and a carbon exhaust system for the fuel tank, no mercury comes with that. There were a couple years some yamahas like the 225hp had [2000-2005] corrosion issues but most are still ticking even with it. Mercurys fine but yamahas better, yamahas made of metal, mercury is a mix of plastic, metal and crappy alloys.

Buying a transom mount engine is a massive investment today . I spent 6 months deliberating before pulling the trigger . What sold me was in incredible harsh environments like the North Canada polar regions , governments , explorer's, and native folk mostly had Yams hung over the transom. Good enough for them, me to . 3 years later I'm very happy . F15

Good job of comparing the two manufactures. I've had a 1987 Yamaha Prov150 that was still running strong until 2023, no major repairs after 35+ years of use. Recently purchased a new boat that has a Mercury 150 ProXS. Hope the Mercury lasts at least a decade without issues, time will tell. Both companies build great outboards.

I just took delivery on a new boat yesterday that has the Mercury 150 ProXS hanging off the back. In my area the dealers all offer Mercury and they're all praising these motors, even the ones like the video that sell multiple brands. I just sold a 1994 Spectrum boat that had a 90hp Force (formally Chrysler Marine) 2 stroke by Mercury Marine that ran strong. I'm confident in my choice, but like you said "time will tell." Happy boating!

I have had 8 boats over the years. EACH time I never looked at performance specs or opinions. I chose one motor time after time after time for one reason. I'm a fisherman, and fish very remote waters. Only one brand has service almost every place. In every small town, at every lake, at every tiny hamlet. MERC ! An extra HP or some miniscule fuel efficiency means nothing. The ability to get quick service or parts so a trip is not ruined is EVERYTHING !!!

Had a honda 90hp last me well over 1000 hours before I sold it. It never really gave me any issues. IMO yamaha and honda are the two best. It also depends on the weight category. Curent Yamaha 50's and 60's are the same engine, former having a restrictor plate. The honda 50 is lighter, but the honda 60 is nearly as heavy as the Yamaha f70.

Both are excellent motors! Outboard technology has improved significantly over the past 10 years. As someone pointed out, gearing/prop selection/and lower unit lengths are important based upon hull design. And I have seen some large center console cats with multiple outboards that I wouldn’t hesitate to capture salmon/halibut or lingcod in Alaska. There’s a few spots up there with one of those you would be back bbqing when everyone else is just putting their lines in 😂

And 9 out of 10people we talked to said go with the yamaha you will not be disappointed. We are not. This 150 runs this boat 43 mph wot. And 35 mph cruise. We love it. Not to mention the fuel consumption is half of what it was with the old 2 stroke. And we paired it with the new siren interface that adds a 3 year extended warranty to 6 years and I can monitor all my boat functions from my phone including tracking system and security to help stop boat theft. I think we went the right direction.

Big fan of my 115 Mercury Pro XS. Its so quiet at idle I have to check the tach gauge to see if its running from the helm. Fuel economy is also amazing on my 18 foot Tahoe. Last week I did 43 miles on the lake, lots of it pulling an innertube. Only used 8 gallons of fuel. Also very easy to service as far as the gear and engine oil.

Seriously.. because I'm interested in getting a 115 pro xs. for my 17ft sunbird ski boat.. currently I have a 1989 88 hp Johnson spl. Excellent outboard it still runs like new.but...the gas mileage is horrible. Comes out to 3 mpg going just on plane. I need to fill up 12 gallons 2x if I'm out all day.

@@samciarametaro2705 Dead Serious.I use to have a small 14 foot fiberglass boat with a 60 hp mercury 2 stroke. I would use 12 gallons of fuel a day to go 35 miles on the water at about 20-25 mph. I can do that same speed and distance with this new 115 merc on my bigger 18 foot boat and use half the fuel. This new 115 pro xs motor is no joke.

I purchased a new 25 foot Robalo center consul and my dealer offered Yamaha or Mercury, I decided on the Mercury for two primary reasons; first, Mercury was a V8 where the Yamaha was a V6 and second mercury is made in the USA which is very attractive to me. it also did not hurt that the Mercury was black and the Yamaha gray or white as the hull of my boat is all black and the mercury was aesthetically more pleasing. I only have one season on the boat/outboard, but to date I have had no problems with either.

As a dealer you know that the 40-60 hp class Mercury's are all are made in China and the 30 HP and below Mercs are all made by Tohatsu. At any rate the comparison should be between Yamaha and Suzuki in mid-range HP class. Who cares about who has the best motors for the huge HP class :) if you have that much money repowering at 500 hours is no problem. Most all major makers are producing great performing motors....but for the common man in the mid-range HP class, I think 9 out of 10 guys that put a lot of hours on the ocean would say Yamaha over Merc, but pick Suzuki over either. But the later G1 E-tec's were better than either in all aspects but suffered from bad marketing.

I've had nothing but great things from Yamaha Outboards. As a Rowing Coach, I switched to a Yamaha 15 hp and the results were remarkable. Much more quiet, very good on fuel, and the get up and go when needed. I'd put on in hours daily use that most Outboard owners would get in years of use. A season in Coaching on the water for us in Competitive Rowing was incredible compared to weekenders trolling for a few hours maybe once a month. I'm an avid fisherman outside of my Coaching. My Yamaha was outstanding. Now I have used both Mercury and Evinrude during my many years of coaching. But I wanted my own Outboard and no sharing. The Evinrude was good, and it was good on fuel use too. It loved to use fuel. Mercury though loved being run fast. So, I equate the Evinrude and Mercury perhaps to choices of spark plugs. When you run these engines for 6 hours per day weekdays and 10 hours on Saturday and Sunday. It totals up the running hours per motor really fast. But I must say, my Yamaha, first pull, every time, and quiet.

Great review, but there is a glaring omission. Our host mentions mercury’s joy stick control and that Mercury uses, paraphrasing here, cutting edge technology. The host mentions Yamahas slow trolling feature but fails to talk about the plethora of advanced features of Yamahas joy stick system, the Helm master EX that works with Yamahas digital motors, (Mercury verados are all digital and are what is required for their joy stick system) In addition to the slow trolling feature there is a spot lock feature which will hold the bow or the stern into the wind, there is also drift point that will follow a route you set up with speed to slowly navigate the boat over a reef, wreck or other structure and then if desired will hold the boat at the end of the route. The helm master EX will also function with your mfd and act as an auto pilot for headings and speed and upon arrival will slow the boat and hold it in that position. Yamaha wrote the book on joy stick controls and are by far and away the best in this area.

I was a boat dealer for 30-35 years starting in 1984. We sold both Yamaha and Mariner (Mercury). We only sold Mariner for 2-3 years though. Significantly more issues with them. Mainly small issues, but as a dealer we wanted to avoid those kinds of problems for our customers and not have to deal with warranty claims. Yamahas were just better engineered and absolutely bullet proof. We'd sell a Yamaha and we would only see customers when they would buy oil. Oustanding engines. The one problem area we did have was with the early ProV 150s. Lower unit gear ratio was an aggressive 2:1 and some of the gears wouldnt hold up to the torque but Yamaha ended up beefing them up in short order. We talked to one customer that used his Yamahas for a daily ferry service. He would put 7000 hours on his Yamahas and then repower with new ones. The Yamahas were still running strong but he had to avoid failures and would proactively replace them at that point. Simply amazing.
